Tulane University Graduate Student Reflects

on BREATHE Program Internship

Solange Paredes

During the Spring and Summer of 2022, I interned with the BREATHE program through the Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center. As a current laboratorian and master’s student in Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, I felt it essential to strengthen my experience in community involvement. Through this perspective, I had a better understanding of the importance of another facet of public health that did not involve biomedical research. An internship with the Louisiana Department of Health provided insight into the vital role of public health tracking to increase health equity and access to asthma care services. In the application and enrollment of people within the community, I was able to relate what I learned from courses at Tulane and felt that I not only gained valuable knowledge, but I also made an impact.

3 Questions with Tulane LMS Learner of the Month - Jimmie Davis

Jimmie Davis

Jimmie Davis is a semi-retired senior citizen that left the workforce in July of 2021. In his former profession, Mr. Davis worked with the homeless population of Detroit, Michigan. No longer in the workforce, Mr. Davis discovered that an idle body does not equal an idle mind. Because of his creativity and passion to address the needs of the masses, Mr. Davis was compelled to research and develop a new program/project to address citywide conservation, environmental, community health issues facing the city of Detroit and its surroundings.

How did you hear about the Tulane Learning Management System?

I learned about the Tulane Learning Management System while searching the Internet for free Conservation/Environmental trainings.

What’s the best thing about the trainings on the Tulane LMS?

Aside from being free, the trainings are thorough and manageable.

How have the trainings been beneficial to you?

I have fostered an idea for a new non-profit to address several conservation/environmental/community health issues facing Metropolitan Detroit, Michigan area. Several of the courses hosted on the Tulane Learning Management System go right to the heart of these issues.

Thank you for being our December 2022 Tulane LMS Learner of the Month, Jimmie Davis!
