Lawn experts say leaves need to be blown off, or raked off once a week during heavy leaf season so they don't shade the grass and kill it. If you don't have a lot of leaves, you can get rid of them by just mowing them into the grass with a mulching blade set at 2-inches high. Cut the leaves into shreds about the size of a dime by going back and forth over them until they settle into the grass, making it look as though you had raked. This will help provide nutrients back to the soil, supporting micro-organisms that live there.
If you have a lot of leaves, remove them by raking them away, blowing them away, or mowing them using a bag on your mower. Add them to your compost pile, or create mulch for other areas of the garden. Blowing leaves saves time, however at least one raking will remove thatch. In spring and summer mow at the magic height of 3.5 inches to prevent most weeds without resorting to chemicals, and leave the clippings.
If planting a new lawn, blow off or rake the leaves away, before putting the seeds down, so the seeds make contact with the soil. Spread a thin layer of organic fertilizer over the seeds with a Scott spreader set at 6, and then start watering. The seeds will sprout in a week. You can gently blow off any leaves that have accumulated 2 weeks after you plant.
Have at least one leaf pile on your property to provide shelter, as well as a nesting place for hibernating animals, frogs, salamanders, chipmunks, box turtles, earthworms, and many insects. Many butterfly and moth species winter-over in leaf piles, and birds search for worms and grubs among the leaves.
Apply a very light organic fertilizer application in the fall to help winterize the grass to stay green and help with root development. In cold climates, do not apply any light fertilizer after mid November to avoid causing snow mold in the spring.

Planting Season is delayed due to warmest weather in history!
If you've already received your seeds, for best success please be sure to follow the simple instructions on the instruction sheet that comes with your grass seed.
If you haven't received your seeds yet, a slight delay will not in any way affect your ability to plant a Pearl's Premium Ultra Low Maintenance Lawn this fall. In fact, because this is the warmest year in weather history, the beginning of planting season has been delayed nearly a month. Nights may be cool in your area, and days may be mild, but that has no bearing whatsoever on the best time to plant. It's soil temperature that matters, and in the fall, soil temperature is typically 10 degrees higher than air temperature. Remember to plant whenever soil temperatures are between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, whether in the northern or southern hemisphere.
-
Down South, or in California do not plant until the 1st or 2nd week of October.

Most people think spring is the best time to plant grass.
It's actually fall!
Tips for Fall Planting
Fall is the best time to establish a new lawn or overseed an existing one. Cooler nights make it easier to keep the seeds moist during germination. Most of the weeds that compete with grass are dead and diseases are under control. The new grass will have the fall and spring seasons to mature before facing all the stress of summer!
| |
An Easy Transition!
Make an easy changeover to the most environmentally friendly lawn in the world, with huge time, money & water savings while reducing atmospheric carbon with safe, sustainable, low maintenance turf.
