The city of Sterling Heights Parks and Recreation Department recently embarked on their Esports adventure with an official ribbon cutting for the new Esports Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 5. Located inside the Sterling Heights Community Center, the Arena is sponsored by Christian Financial Credit Union.

Esports is quickly becoming the forerunner in advanced sports as it gives video gamers the opportunity to play competitively through varsity sports, high stakes leagues and college level degree programs. The new amenity continues Sterling Heights’ mission to provide a diverse mix of recreational activities and programming for residents of all ages.

Given the cost and the expected popularity with an Esports arena, the Parks and Recreation Department secured a sponsorship commitment from a long-term supporter of its programs and activities, Christian Financial Credit Union, which is headquartered in Sterling Heights.

“When we were approached about partnering with Sterling Heights Parks and Recreation on their Esports Arena, I knew it was a great opportunity to bring something unique to residents,” said Rebekah Monroe, vice president of marketing and product development for Christian Financial Credit Union. “This really fits within our core values of innovation and making an impact in the communities we serve. It’s good for the city, good for us and good for our members. It’s a win-win.”

Over a four-year span, Christian Financial Credit Union will donate $25,000 to the Esports Arena, and as a result, the credit union will be deemed the Arena’s presenting sponsor.

“Through the partnership with Christian Financial Credit Union, we are able to deliver a quality recreation experience for our residents and Esports players, while also providing an opportunity for socialization and in-person interaction with fellow gamers,” said Sterling Heights Parks and Recreation Director Kyle Langlois. “The high-level gaming systems will help us set the standard for premium playing opportunities in municipalities throughout the state.”

The Esports Arena is designed and outfitted with furniture and technology for drop-in, league and tournament video game play, and includes two Nintendo Switch controllers, 1 PlayStation 4 and 12 Alienware Aurora R12 gaming computers with i7 processors, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 graphics cards to give users the best gaming experience possible.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer, and the Sterling Heights Police Department is bringing awareness through wearing commemorative pink badges in the month of October to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
