OUR PARISH MISSION
Christ Church exists to show everyone God loves them unconditionally.
We do that by EXPERIENCING, EMBRACING, AND EXTENDING
God's love.

There are three ways to give to the mission of Christ Church:
you can mail in your pledge, give online, or text GIVE to (850) 403-6673.

The Bible Project
Throughout the fall, we will use the Bible Project to lead us as we dig deeper into God’s Word. Each week, we will read a book of the New Testament. Click here for the readings and links.
There are four ways to engage in this study:
1.    Disciple track – read highlights of the Bible book over the course of the week.
2.    Scholar track – read the entire Bible book over the course of the week.
3.    Bible Project Videos – watch a short background and overview video on the Bible book covered that week.
Reflection – We will have a weekly social media post with the links and a reflection question as a way to engage with Scripture at home or with others. We would love to hear your thoughts and responses in the comments.

Circle of Care Ministry Spotlight:
EUCHARISTIC VISITORS
Perhaps you’re streaming services from Christ Church but still feel isolated because you’re missing the apex of our Episcopal service, the Eucharist. If you’re home bound for any reason or at an assisted living or rehab facility and want communion, Christ Church Circle of Care has a group of licensed Eucharistic Visitors who would love to bring you communion. You may receive a Eucharistic Visit on a regular basis – weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or for a one-time visit. The frequency will be worked out between you and your Eucharistic Visitor, who can also be your direct information contact for services, events, and news from your friends at Christ Church. If you are interested in receiving communion at home or at a location other than Christ Church, please contact Rev. Katie.

Also, as with all ministries, the rewards of being a Eucharistic Visitor are greater than most can imagine. You can become a lifeline to someone having to be away from their church. If you think you’d like to become a Eucharistic Visitor, please sign up here or email Rev. Katie and she will contact you when these positions open and training becomes available.

THE MUSIC OF THE LITURGY: THE SEQUENCE
With the recent relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions to our worship, we are reintroducing service music to our Eucharist. This week, we will again sing the Sequence between the Epistle and Gospel.
When, by the 12th Century, the Gregorian Chants of the Roman Mass reached their most corpulent, the liturgy was filled with chants, numerous and extensive. In the space between the Epistle and Gospel, three separate propers were sung: a Gradual; an Alleluia or Tract; and a Sequence.
The Gradual was sung at the steps of the Chancel, from which it derives its name (Latin Gradus, “step”) and consisted of a Psalm verse bookended by a refrain. This was followed by the Alleluia, which began with a florid chant setting of the word “Alleluia” followed by a Psalm verse and a reprise of the “Alleluia.” Alleluias were very melismatic: long strings of notes (melismas) were sung to a single syllable of text. In Lent, Alleluias were forbidden, and Tracts consisting of verses of psalms, were sung in their places. The Sequence (Lat. Sequentia from sequor, “to follow”) followed the Alleluia, or rather, grew out of it.
Medieval composers saw the melismas of the Alleluia as occasions for new compositions. The melismas were excised, expanded, fitted with new words, and appended onto the Alleluias from whence they came. These tropes were much more syllabic than the Alleluias and resembled our present-day hymns. By the early 16th Century, Sequences had proliferated and formed an extensive body of over four thousand chants.
During the Council of Trent (1545-1563, intermittent), which ordered Catholic diocesan bishops to “banish from church all music that contains, whether in the singing or in the organ playing, things that are lascivious or impure,” the number of allowable Sequences was reduced to four. Three of these may be found in The Hymnal 1982Victimae paschali laudes (“Christians, to the Paschal victim,” 183); Lauda Sion salvatorem (“Zion, praise thy Savior,” 320); Veni Sancte Spiritus (“Come, thou Holy Spirit bright,” 226); along with another Sequence deemed acceptable in 1727, the Stabat mater dolorosa (“At the cross her station keeping,” 159).
According to The Book of Common Prayer, we today have the freedom to select any appropriate hymn, psalm, or anthem to occupy the place of the Sequence. Regardless of its form, the Sequence still occupies its place between the Epistle and Gospel, where it has lived for more than a millennium.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRIES
~ Sunday, October 10 ~
Parents: Please walk your children to the Christian Education Building. Enter by the church courtyard and go through the green door marked for your entry. You will follow the footsteps along the hallways to the Christian Education Building. The nursery is on the first floor and Sunday School rooms are upstairs on the second floor. This will be an opportunity for you to see this newly refurbished area of the church. You can pick your children up from their classrooms or nursery following the 10:30 service.

8:00 AM – The Nursery is available for children ages infant through 3-years-old.

9:30 AM – At this time, the Sunday School program is paused. Please join us during the 10:30 AM service for Godly Play for younger children and Journey Through the Bible for our older children.

10:30 AM – During the 10:30 AM service, the Nursery is available for children ages infant through 3 years old, located on the first floor of the Christian Education building.

Godly Play is offered for children in Pre-K 4 through 3rd grade. Children learn the stories of our faith while playing, crafting, and exploring. A snack is offered. This coming Sunday, we will continue hearing stories of the “Superheroes” of the Old Testament. Our story will feature Abraham & Sarah and the people of God as they seek the presence of God in their lives. The children will have an opportunity to see a story told with our desert box – always a memorable Sunday.

Journey Through the Bible is a new curriculum for our 4th and 5th graders. They will journey through the entire Bible the two years of this class, starting with the New Testament this year.
STAY CONNECTED WITH
CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRY!
Children and Family Ministry (CFM) has two new ways to keep our families connected with Christ Church during the week. CFM is on Instagram, @cckidspensacola, and shares what is happening on Sunday mornings and ideas for how to keep faithful conversations happening during the week. CFM also has a bite-sized weekly email with the "5 Things" our families need to know for the week – Sunday reminders, save the dates, and more. Would you like to be added? Email Victoria to be added to the list!
NEW ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CLASS:
"The Return of the Prodigal Son"
Sundays ~ 9:15 AM
In the painting by Rembrandt, the elder son is given almost as much attention as the younger son who is often considered the only prodigal in Jesus' parable. Henri Nouwen, in his book of the same title, gives as much or more attention to the prodigal elder son. He suggests that most Christians might best identify with the elder son of the story. Why and how the compliant son needs to renew his relationship with his family is the focus of conversation this Sunday beginning at 9:15 AM in in the Christian Education building, Room 31, or join by Zoom. Dick Hooper and David Starling facilitate the discussion.
EXPLORING THE SOCIAL EFFECTS OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC THROUGH A RACIAL EQUITY LENS
Thursday, October 14 ~ 7:00-8:30 PM ~ via Zoom
An online Zoom interactive conversation presented by the Commission on Racial Justice of the Episcopal Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. For more information, please click here.

HAPPENING #58
November 12-15 ~ Camp Beckwith
Happening #58 will be November 12-14 at Beckwith; this year is only for 12th graders. If you are in 12th grade and are interested in a safe, fun weekend at Beckwith, you can register here. If you have any questions, please let Sarah know.  Happening #59 will move back to 10th-12th graders.
ALTAR FLOWER DEDICATIONS
Each week our worship service is enhanced with beautiful fresh flowers. After the Sunday services, the altar flower arrangements are reworked into smaller arrangements. These arrangements are delivered to members of our parish family that are unable to attend a Sunday service. The altar flowers are a memorial, a thanksgiving for an anniversary, a birthday, a new birth, or a thanksgiving for God's blessings. The donation is listed in the weekly bulletin. Forms to participate in this ministry are available here and on the information table in the Parish Office.
CARE IN COMMUNITY
Christ Church is here for you. There are many ministries to love and support the people who are the church. We continue to support one another, especially during this pandemic. If you are interested in assisting with staying connected to our church family, please email Rev. Katie or call her at the Parish Office, 850-432-5115. It is easy to feel alone or disconnected right now, so reach out to one of the priests or someone at the church to say hello. Contact Rev. Katie if you or anyone you know has any needs. If you have a pastoral emergency, please call our pastoral care emergency line to speak directly with one of the priests: (850) 462-5137.
