In 1996 I was invited curate an exhibition of the works by American quilt artists at the All Russia Museum of Decorative Arts in Moscow, Russia. Funded in part by a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts, I chose five artists who accompanied me to Russia for the exhibition. During our visits to Moscow and St. Petersburg, we had an opportunity to meet with local artists with whom we shared experiences of our lives as artists in our different cultures. They were about to transition to a free market economy without the generous subsidies and government commissions to which they were accustomed . Close friendships were formed and two of these families have subsequently emigrated to the U.S.
Below is a photo of me with the museum director and the mayor of Moscow at the opening reception.
