National President

Colleen Orfanello

Friends, BEElieve it or not, we are only 2 months away from the end of my term. Hosting the monthly Zoom meetings has been such a fun aspect of my job. With that being said, I am happy to say that I have passed the torch of hosting the next (and final) 2 Zoom meetings to our National S. and Jr. Vice Presidents. Over the next few weeks, we will be transitioning skills and knowledge from my toolkit to those of kay Jos and Barbara's. It is my wish that I leave them both with the implements they need to successfully begin the 2022-2023 term with enthusiasm, dedication, and of course, patriotism - which is the theme for this month. So let's all "BEE" Patriotic and tune in on Thursday to support Barbara Hale Ray's debut in hosting a monthly Zoom meeting.

So speaking of Patriotism, I was so very honored to represent the MOPHA in Washington during Memorial Day. It was bittersweet for those back home in Louisiana - since I was not serving my famous (ok, not really famous) lemonade at my local Veteran's Cemetery, but I know that my absence was necessary because I was representing all of our members, our Patriots, our supporters, and everyone whose photograph was on the Memorial Quilt. Many of our members sent me the names of loved ones they wished for me to read aloud on Memorial Day when I was at Arlington, the Wall, and Korean Memorial. It was a privilege to do so and I look forward to sharing my experience on Thursday evening with all of you.

I would also like to acknowledge the newly elected (and seasoned) members members of the National Executive Committee. The "NEC" is composed of all National Elected Officers, the National Secretary, the National Membership Officer, the National VAVS/CDCE Representative, all Past National Presidents, and all current Department Auxiliary Presidents (or in their absence, the Senior or Junior Vice President of the respective Department. We will be hosting a Meet & Greet for Department Presidents next week on Thursday June 23rd. More info will be sent to the Department Presidents. Senior and Junior Presidents are also welcomed to attend. And a special acknowledgement to Kasandra Christner. Kassandra is the niece of National Secretary Judy Fiddler and granddaughter of Past National President Joan Walsh. Kasandra's Presidency has made history as the first 3rd generational Department President. Congrats Kasandra, and all of our Department Presidents. A listing of the 20222-2023 NEC may be accessed here:

Lastly, it has been such a pleasure working with the MOPH leadership team. I must admit that sometimes. I forget that Chris Vedvick (National Sr. Vice Commander) and Carder Ferguson (National Jr. Vice Commander) are not members of our Auxiliary because I speak to them several times a week and they have been amazing! The MOPH Leadership team is truly supportive of the Auxiliary's goals and good deeds. I know that Kay Jo and Barbara will have the same incredible relationship with them as they they are promoted to their leadership positions.

On FLAG DAY, and every day, "THA K YOU" to all of you for BEEing Patriotic members of the MOPHA.

Before I end, take a moment and read the verbal break-down of the Pledge of Allegiance as spoken by comedian Red Skelton in 1969. It can also be heard by clicking here:

I

Me; an individual; a committee of one.

Pledge

Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.

Allegiance

My love and my devotion.

To the Flag

Our standard; Old Glory; a symbol of Freedom; wherever she waves there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts, Freedom is everybody’s job.

of the United

That means that we have all come together.

States

Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that is love for country.

And to the Republic

Republic — a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people; and it’s from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

For which it stands

One Nation

One Nation — meaning, so blessed by God.

Indivisible

Incapable of being divided.

With Liberty

Which is Freedom; the right of power to live one’s own life, without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation.

And Justice

The principle, or quality, of dealing fairly with others.

For All

For All — which means, boys and girls, it’s as much your country as it is mine. And now, boys and girls, let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:

I am looking forward to virtually visiting with all of you this Thursday.

The flag of the United States of America is a beautiful symbol of our country. It’s colors remind us of the heritage each of us has in this nation. It is the flag that service men and women salute and fight for. It is also the flag that is wrapped around the remains of that veteran when death takes their life. Memorial Day allows us time to pause and remember the price so many paid for us to have a holiday, short vacation and summer beginnings- complete with cookouts and swimming . We want families to remember the fun, laughter and together times that the departed shared . Gold Star families need to remember those special times filled with love and laughter- favorite foods, tv shows, memories of good times spent with those loved and lost. Acknowledge the tremendous loss , listen to the grief and encourage the telling of good times. The families of the fallen need this and we do too .

Happy Hat Day

Today as I prepared for my day, I looked around and focused on all my hats hanging on my hat rack. I was quickly reminded of the Veteran who came to my home yesterday to pick up his tickets, and I happily saluted him by saying, hello Navy. He chuckled at my remarks and waited patiently for my Patriot.

How many Veterans are acknowledged by their service cap, how many may have flashbacks of their time in service? We may never know, but the smiles on their faces tell it all. They proudly show where they spent time and will give you details to support the stories they love to tell.

It was at a time where being 18 years old and away from home for the first time, their Hat served them proud. They remember families left behind, romances in full bloom left on the shelves, babies in the oven waiting for their delivery day, the buckets of tears left, and the stories go on and on and on.

All of the hats I wear may not carry any significance that would compare to those who served, so I am proud to say to them, I salute you, and I thank you for your service. Welcome Home!

Fran Holtgreven,

Region V President

Congratulations to all newly elected 2022-2023 Officers of Region V. Congratulations to all appointed Officers, without your help, elected positions would have to carry a heavier load. Each of you have taken a giant step in helping the Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary remain a presence in helping and honoring our Patriots and Veterans this coming year. The last few years have been complicated, and I am hoping that this coming year will be less complicated, and we will be able to go in person into the VA Hospitals, Nursing Homes and other facilities where our Veterans are located. It is not only amazing to see a smile on a Veterans face, but it also puts a smile on your face, when you have one on one contact and to let them know they are not forgotten.  Thank you for taking on this commitment. Reach out to your National Officers if you have questions, ideas or comments, they are here to help and support your Unit or Department.

I would also like to congratulate all Officers and appointed Officers of the other Regions. Thank you for helping our Patriots and Veterans all over the country.

A Friendly Reminder from our National Secretary:

The President, Senior Vice-President, Junior Vice-President, Treasurer, Parliamentarian, Sergeant-at-Arms and at least one Finance Committee member are elected at the National Convention each year.

Each member of the National Executive Committee, present at a meeting of the Convention, shall be entitled to ONE vote. The vote of Unit/Department Presidents or Vice-Presidents shall be recorded as the CHARTER vote. One (1), or more, DELEGATE(S), will vote the Unit strength. No proxy votes are counted. Unit strength is determined by the number of regular members… One (1) vote for every ten (10) regular members. For example, if the Unit has 24 regular members…they would receive two (2) votes. Junior or Associate members are not counted. A DELEGATE is voted on at the Unit meeting and there can be more than one. If only one (1) Delegate is present, they may cast the full delegate strength of their Unit. If there are more than one Delegates/Alternates, the vote can be split between the number of candidates if so desired. Voting is only allowed if an Installation report for the Unit was submitted by May 31 and the Delegate/Alternate answers “HERE” during the roll call of Units.

There is a Delegate/Alternate form available on the website… purpleheartauxiliary.org. Print it…fill it out and submit to the National Secretary. This is then the “Credentials” you need to vote with. Submission should be by June 30. However, since some do not know if they will be attending the National Convention until later, the form can be brought to the Credentials table at National Convention. More information will be shared next Thursday at the Department President's Meet & Greet Zoom Meeting on 6/23.

Convention plans are moving along nicely. Please register as soon as possible. The Dakotas are going out of their way to make this “Exploring New Opportunities” a wonder experience.

Hope to see you there…Judy

FLAG DAY

"FLAG DAY' June 14th

A few brief facts:

When the American Revolution broke out in 1775, the colonists weren't fighting united under a single flag. In 1775 the "Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to create the Continental Army , a unified colonial fighting force. This led to the creation of the first "American" flag. Then known as the "Continental Colors.

June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that "the flag" of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white, and that the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.

In 1916 then President Woodrow Wilson, officially established June 14 as Flag Day..

In 1885 Bernard Cigrand, a small town Wisconsin teacher, originated the idea for an annual flag day, to be celebrated nation wide every June 14.

It is believed that Betsy Ross made the first American flag. However if has been confirmed that Francis Hopkinson a delegate from New Jersey who signed the Declaration of Independence designed the American Flag.

Some other facts:

The 50 star flag was raised on July 4, 1960 by President Eisenhower. Bob Heft was the creator.

Unlike setting an intact flag on fire, flying one upside-down is not always intended as an act of protest. According to the Flag Code, it can also be an official distress signal.

The Flag Code stipulates that the Stars and Stripes should not be used as apparel, bedding or drapery.

The practice of draping coffins in the American flag is not reserved for military veterans and government officials, but any burial may incorporate this tradition.

Etiquette calls for American flags to be illuminated by sunlight or another light source while on display.

Respectful burning of damaged flags according to established protocol has always been acceptable.

When flags are taken down from their poles, care must be taken to keep them from touching the group.

(More info on our flag will be given out to those attending the National Convention in August.)

Yours in Patriotism

Region 2 :President

CONGRATULATIONS REGION 2 – ONCE AGAIN ALL INSTALLATION REPORTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED!!!

I wish all newly elected Region 2 Department and Unit Officers and Appointed Staff a successful year.

WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER!

Continue to send me your projects and photos to share in our monthly General Orders. It is a great way for other units to see what and how you accomplished a project which in turn gives another Unit/Department and idea to do in helping and coming alongside their veterans. When you send in those photos, include what, when, where and each name of individual in photo. It is a good way to put a name to a beautiful face.

I would like to highlight Ohio in this G.O. For 2022-2023 the Department of Ohio elected a

3rd Generation Department President, Kasandra Christner. The first was Joan Walsh and second was Judy Fiddler. An example of “BEEING AN EXAMPLE AND MENTORSHIP.”

THE 2022 Memorial Quilt

Front.jpg

President Colleen is looking forward to sharing photos of her visit to Washington on Thursday Evening.

Memorial Quilt

The front of the quit will be named, "The Faces of Freedom." The patterned heart-design was inspired by a submission that read the following:

"Please find enclosed a list of photos of those who gave their all (in combat).

They are members of the 1st Air Cavalry Division, 7th Battalion, Charlie Company, who were in the invasion of Cambodia. The dates range from April to July of 1970.

I would like to request that these all be together as one unit, as we, those who still honor our brothers who gave their all, and would like to see it as one entity.

Thank you for taking the time to do this, your support is greatly appreciated."

It was this beautiful request that inspired the hearts (that require 27 photos; the exact number of men that the submitter sent to us.)

BEEing Patriotic!

NOTICE!:

That didn't stop the trio from enjoying the show. The three watched from the comfort of the hotel room and patriotically stood for the National Anthem.
