Principal's Message

Dear Greenbriar families,

We had a busy week at Greenbriar! Our 2nd-5th graders are moving through MAP testing and should wrap up next week. Yesterday, we had our first Greyhound Pack meetings of the year. As a reminder, packs are groups of students from across grade levels who meet monthly to do fun activities together. Packs and their pack leaders stay together during their entire time at Greenbriar. We were excited to welcome our kindergarteners and new students to their packs this week!

We continue to focus on building safe routines throughout the day. To that end, we have a couple of safety requests for parents. If you are dropping off your children in the carline, please make sure they exit the vehicle on the passenger side (not the driver's side). This helps keep kids out of the traffic moving by on Greenbriar and helps to keep our supervisors out of the street.

As well, if you happen to be walking or driving down Cherry Lane when kids are out at recess, please refrain from stopping to talk with the kids across the fence. This helps our supervisors make sure they're keeping everyone safe. We'd love a good wave as you're passing by instead!

Krieger and I are excited to participate in the Canines 4 Comfort Strut Your Mutt event tomorrow in Lake Villa. Stop by our game booth to play a game and say hi if you're planning to attend!

Have a great weekend!

Warmly,

Ginny

During our pack meeting Thursday, (from left) 4th- and 5th-grade students accompany their younger pack members to the meeting place, then they do a group activity such as creating posters and decorating paws, and they came up with a secret pack signal, which they use to greet each other in school.

PARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We're so excited to be able to invite parents back into the building to volunteer this year! If you're interested in volunteering, there are many opportunities to get involved.

  • Help at a school-wide event like Greyhound Gathering (we still need volunteers!)
  • Volunteer to help with art adventure (contact the PTO to sign up)

TECH CLARIFICATION FOR PARENTS *repeat*

Every classroom has a digital space where students can access information, assignments, and add artifacts of their learning. Seesaw is the platform used in grades K-2 and by our specials teachers (Art, Music, PE, and Spanish). Google Classroom is used in 3rd-5th grade as their main digital learning space, but some 3-5 teachers may also use Seesaw from time to time. Parents may request access to Google Classroom via their child's credentials. Teachers may also send home access to other electronic supports as appropriate for the grade level (e.g., online reading platforms, typing practice, etc.). Your child's teachers are always the best resource to learn about supporting learning via these platforms at home.

Please note that if a child is home under a COVID quarantine and is participating in remote learning, assignments for specials classes (music, art, P.E., Spanish) can be found on SeeSaw for all grades.

Only 5th graders bring home iPads on a daily basis. Students in K-4 may bring home iPads if they are learning remotely or if there is a special assignment from a teacher.

GREYHOUND GATHERING IS SEPT. 21ST! *repeat*

We are getting so excited for our upcoming Greyhound Gathering event on September 21st. This is a family event that will take place on the Greenbriar front blacktop/field. There will be a variety of activities, food, and a raffle of some awesome teacher-donated experiences. Please review the PTO emails with details about the event. We hope to see everyone there!

District News

Staff, Parents Line Up for Blood Drive

A Community Blood Drive in Northbrook collected 46 pints of blood on Saturday, Sept. 10 -- enough to save 138 lives.

Staff members, parents and residents took time out of their day to donate at Greenbriar School, 2195 Cherry Lane. This is the first blood drive Northbrook District 28 has sponsored, which was organized by Greenbriar School Nurse Haley Sachs in honor of a colleague who is battling cancer, instructional assistant Grace Lombardo, and a cancer survivor, Director of Student Services Dr. Kelly Sculles.

Kristin Corradini, a parent of Westmoor and Northbrook Junior High students, said she is not a regular donor. She decided to donate Saturday because it was tied to the community and convenient. “When you make it convenient (right here at the school), people are more inclined to do it,” she said.

Mrs. Lombardo's battle with cancer and the possibility that she may need a blood transfusion drove home the importance of donating blood, Ms. Sachs said.

“One pint can save up to three lives!” Haley said, as she finished donating in a new personal record of 4 minutes and 11 seconds.

The event was such a success, there are already plans to do it again next year.
