Bulletin

Please join us on December 8 for this year’s

Advent Lessons and Carols service

which is based on the great O Antiphons of Advent. Starting nearly 1500 years ago, these seven declarations were used every day during vespers (Evening Prayer) from December 17 through December 23. Each Antiphon is drawn from an Old Testament prophesy about the Messiah. These antiphons form the basis of the famous Advent hymn, O Come, O Come Emmanuel.

  • December 17 O Sapientia – O Wisdom
  • December 18 O Adonai – O Lord
  • December 19 O Radix Jesse – O Root of Jesse
  • December 20 O Clavis David – O Key of David
  • December 21 O Oriens – O Dayspring
  • December 22 O Rex Gentium – O King of the Nations
  • December 23 O Emmanuel – O Emmanuel, God with Us

The first letter of each Latin name (an acrostic) read from last to first spells the word ERO CRAS which is Latin for “Tomorrow, I shall be (there)” The image above, drawn by Emily Norris from North Carolina, visualizes the many names prophesied about the coming Messiah. As we approach the Advent season, let us join with centuries of Christians before us in meditating on O Come, O Come, Emmanuel!

Volunteers Needed to

Help Spread the Christmas Spirit

Fridays - December 13 and December 20

9:45am - Noon

We need two volunteers to help our Friday Walk-In guests with Christmas cards. The guests can choose several cards they would like to have to share or keep. They may want some help in writing their cards.

The guests may also write a card to a Veteran to go with the cards

we are already taking to McGuire Hospital. Patsy will be there to

explain everything to our volunteers.

Please contact the church office to volunteer.

MORE NEWS

Thank You, Centenary

Centenary recently received this heartfelt thank-you note from Housing Families First, a recipient of a $5,000 donation from the Jean Craig Fund. In addition, Commonwealth Catholic Charities (who received their check this week) and Caritas (who expressed their gratitude in a thoughtful phone call) each received $2,500 during the third quarter. These donations were part of the church’s focused efforts to address housing insecurity in our community. This initiative aligns with the Dream Like Jesus vision, as Centenary strives to see the Richmond community as both housed and healthy.

Stewardship Sunday

December 15, 2024

We’ve arrived at that time of the year when we start thinking about and planning for a new year. It’s an exciting time. Where will we go for vacation? What can I change to live a more healthy life? What new thing can I start to be of more service to my community?

It’s also time for us as individuals and a church to think and pray about how we’re using the time, talent and treasures entrusted to us by God. Our church is going through this annual process right now.

To read the entire stewardship letter, click here.

You are invited to pledge using the Estimate of Giving card that was sent out this week with the stewardship letter. Please bring that card with you on December 15. (There will be a limited number of cards available on Sunday morning.)

Or you may pledge online using the simple online pledge form. REMINDER: if you give online, pledging online does not change your online giving. So if you have changed the amount your would like to give regularly , you will need to update your online giving.

Mission

Our mission is to change the world through love.

To acknowledge God’s love is, for each of us, a life-changing event.

As followers of Jesus, we share God’s love for all people, and work together to make our world a better place, one life at a time.
