FACES OF PESA: JAZMYN MARTINEZ

PESA’s Educational Life Coaches are Transforming Student Success in the Antelope Valley

Jazmyn Martinez, a proud member of PESA’s team in the Antelope Valley, plays a vital role as an Educational Life Coach (ELC) at Lancaster High School. She is part of a dedicated group of professionals committed to supporting students struggling with chronic absenteeism and academics through PESA’s Community Attendance Assistance Program (CAAP).

As a PESA employee, Martinez is focused on addressing the unique needs of students who face obstacles in their educational journey. "We’re kind of like counselors, but we prefer the term ‘life coach,’” she shares. “Our goal is to help students with high truancy rates lower their absences and improve their grades.”

Martinez works closely with PESA’s Antelope Valley team to provide students with structured support, following the organization’s philosophy of positive intervention. Her approach is rooted in the “Four E’s of Life Coaching” that PESA implements across its programs: Exploring the student's current reality, Envisioning a compelling future, Executing a plan, and Evaluating progress.

Martinez believes that PESA’s work in the Antelope Valley is especially crucial given the area's challenges with student engagement. "There’s a lot of need in this region," she explains. "Through CAAP, we’re able to reach students who might otherwise fall through the cracks. We encourage them to engage, to come in, sit down, and face their realities, even when it’s hard. But once they do, we can really begin to see change."

Reflecting on her own journey with PESA, Martinez is grateful for the opportunity to make an impact in the lives of the students she works with. "PESA has given me the chance to learn so much and help students in ways I never thought possible," she says. "We don’t just focus on improving grades; we help students realize their full potential, one step at a time. And that's something truly special."

With the support of PESA, Martinez and her fellow ELCs are creating a safe space where students feel heard, understood, and empowered to succeed.
