Message from the Vice Provost for Faculty Success
Greetings Mean Green Colleagues,
Welcome to the fall 2022 semester! The campus is in full flight with students, faculty, and staff all working toward our common educational mission. I hope you will join us Sept. 8 for our Welcome Back meet and greet in the Faculty Lounge (Union 249). We’ll have snacks, drinks, and Faculty Senate and Faculty Success leaders will be there to great you.
As we welcome a record number of students (nearly 44,000!) and more than 120 new faculty members, I am excited to introduce the Faculty Success team that will support our faculty:
| |
|
Angie Cartwright, Ph.D.
Assistant Vice Provost (DEI and Policy)
Angie is an associate professor of counseling and higher education and will lead our work on academic policy questions/counsel and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
| | |
|
Claudia Cooper
Executive Assistant
Claudia oversees Faculty Success event and team scheduling, program budgeting, and is the main lead contact for New Faculty Orientation and Salute to Faculty events.
| | |
Your Faculty Success team exists to “help faculty soar” in three important ways: cultivating a caring and diverse community, enriching your professional capabilities, and advancing your career through policy support and professional recognitions. Please check out our Faculty Success calendar for upcoming events such as our mentoring grants and program, promotion and tenure workshops, inclusive curriculum events and growth mindset initiatives, Fulbright awards and other international interactions, and events involving Research and Innovation.
Please also consider nominating your colleagues for the UNT Foundation Awards by Oct. 1. These important distinctions recognize faculty excellence in mentoring, research, service, teaching, and community engagement. Please let us recognize how our faculty members' Mean Green light shines across the impact they have on students, colleagues, and our community.
As we create and sustain a caring, diverse, and equitable community, we are excited to partner with the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) to welcome Dr. KerryAnn O’Meara, professor of higher education at the University of Maryland, for a keynote presentation and faculty workshops on workload equity. You'll learn more about this event below.
Finally, I encourage you to visit our Faculty Lounge — it's a great place to meet colleagues for coffee or an informal chat. The Lounge is open for drop-ins but can be reserved for a special event. Just search “Faculty Lounge” in your Outlook calendar to make a reservation. On behalf of YOUR Faculty Success team, have a wonderful start to the fall term!

The Anti-Bias and Cultural Awareness (ABCA) program is an important part of UNT’s commitment to facilitating and creating an inclusive, affirming, and equitable environment for our Mean Green Family and the diverse communities we serve. All Academic Affairs faculty and staff must complete three hours of ABCA-compliant training each academic year for merit eligibility. Stay tuned for more upcoming opportunities!
Equity-Minded Workloads by Design
KerryAnn O'Meara
Keynote Presentation for All Faculty
Thursday, Sept. 15 | 9–10:30 a.m.
Gateway Center Ballroom
Continental breakfast at 8:15 a.m.
| |
The unequal distribution of teaching and service work is one of the most important inequities in academia. In particular, faculty from historically minoritized identities and women faculty face unusually high service, teaching, and mentoring workloads.
In this talk co-sponsored by Faculty Success and CLASS, Dr. O’Meara shares what she learned as P.I. of the NSF ADVANCE-funded Faculty Workload and Rewards Project. She considers how workload inequities emerge and the evidence-based policies and practices departments have used to identify inequalities, assess faculty and university needs, and re-design workload with equity in mind.

Translating Equity-Minded Principles to Workload Reform
Faculty Workshops with KerryAnn O'Meara
Friday, Sept. 16

In two workshops — one tailored to CLASS faculty and one open to all UNT faculty — Dr. O'Meara will guide faculty through an audit to identify areas where they can strengthen their policies, systems, and routine practices to create more equitable systems.

Important Updates to UNT's Virtual Lab
The MyLab online computer lab gives you and your students remote access to the software required to complete coursework like SAS, IBM SPSS, personal Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions, and many more.
New and returning users should know that there have been some recent upgrades to MyLab that will require action prior to use, including Duo Mobile multifactor authentication. To ensure you’re able to access the apps you need, get started on the MyLab website.
If your students have used VM Horizon in the past, let them know they will now be using MyLab (Citrix) to access Windows streaming applications on both Windows and Macs. Learn more in this short introductory video.

Adobe Creative Cloud
Student Discounts
We encourage you to remind your students that they can purchase an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription for just $55.55 per academic year — significantly less than the student offer available directly from Adobe. With a personal subscription through UNT, students get 24/7 access to all of Adobe's high-powered apps on any personal device (including mobile) as well as checkout laptops from the UNT Libraries. Students can visit unt.edu/adobe to purchase their subscription, or for more information, email adobe@unt.edu.

No Class Nov. 23–26
As published in the 2022-23 Academic Calendar, UNT will not hold classes Wednesday, Nov. 23 through Saturday, Nov. 26. The university will remain open Nov. 23.
Faculty teaching "Wednesday and Saturday only" courses should consider alternative ways to achieve equivalent out-of-class learning outcomes. For example, faculty may deliver missed content via an online module, assigning an additional reading/activity, or having students view and respond to a pre-recorded lecture. Additional information concerning standards for evaluating credit hours can be found in UNT Policy 06.001.
| | | |
Faculty can earn ABCA credit by attending any two CLEAR inclusive events in their entirety.
Visit the DSI CLEAR website for more upcoming events!

Click-to-Count
Each year, library staff review the online journals we subscribe to in order to assess which ones to retain and which can be canceled. Usage data plays heavily into those decisions. With data from the vendors and publishers, we calculate cost-per-use, cost-per-download, and other ratios that factor into a bigger decision about whether or not to continue subscribing to a journal.
This data is only captured when a user clicks on a link to a journal article (or e-book or streaming video…). If you upload PDF copies of articles instead of providing direct links, the usage data is not captured. To ensure that every use of an online journal gets counted, please do not share copies of articles directly with students. Instead, provide a link to the article on the website of the publisher or database. For more information, please visit the Click-to-Count website.

In spring 2022, the UNT Libraries completed the acquisition of many new materials related to Africana Studies. Over 220 e-books and 20 print titles are now available, as well as 50+ videos and a new database, the Oxford African American Studies Center. The titles explore a wide range of topics, including the African diaspora, genomics, racism, African American literature and arts, biographies of significant individuals, African American history from pre-U.S. to present, Black feminism, and much more.
Journalism keeps us aware of events both near and far, from political issues to sports and more. While documenting history and contemporary opinion, the profession also helps develop the English language, photography, and social connections. Visit the Journalism Collection website for more than 150 recently added journalism-related books. And, if you were not already aware, UNT community members can sign up for a free account to access The New York Times!

Growth Mindset Faculty Resources
Approaching students with an empathetic lens
Cultivating an environment where students feel supported, included, and empowered to succeed creates a foundation where a growth mindset can flourish. Research shows us that when learning environments promote belonging and communicate a growth mindset about intelligence, students are more likely to take advantage of campus resources and persist through challenges.
Find out what growth mindset strategies lead to a sense of belonging and self-efficacy, what UNT professional development opportunities support growth mindset and an inclusive student experience, and how the syllabus can be used as a tool for inclusion by accessing Growth Mindset – Faculty Focus.

Welcome, new faculty!
It was a pleasure welcoming the newest members of our Mean Green faculty to UNT during New Faculty Orientation Aug. 17-18. Resources from NFO can be downloaded from our website. Remember that you can reach out to our team or to your department leaders if you need anything — we are here to support you and help make your first semester a success.

As we begin a new fall semester, we face some unique situations that we may not have previously experienced as a campus. Should you need help with a safety or security issue, the UNT Police Department is a dually accredited department that solely serves UNT. We operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
The recent school shooting tragedies such as that in Uvalde have pushed school safety to the forefront of discussion. For many years now, the UNT Police Department has been training with our law enforcement and emergency services partners for active threat situations and we continually use recent history to evolve our own trainings and response readiness. This past summer, we began a new round of training and collaboration with Denton PD, Denton Fire, Denton County Sheriff’s Office, TWU Police, and NCTC Police that will continue into spring 2023, when we will conduct full-scale training exercises combining all our disciplines and cooperative efforts. Please rest assured we are spending considerable time and effort to provide prompt and effective threat mitigation to our UNT community, should we be called upon to do so.
In the meantime, our Community Relations Officer, Cpl. David Causey, is available to provide active threat training to your workgroup or class at your convenience. To schedule a session or discuss other topics available, please reach out to him at David.Causey@unt.edu. Also, as this Fall semester begins, please verify or correct the contact info in your employee portal so that you receive emergency messaging (Eagle Alerts) via your preferred method.
Have a great semester!
