COVID-19 Update
The highly transmissible delta variant is now the dominant coronavirus strain in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Delta variant originally surfaced in India. Delta now represent 51.7% of new Covid cases in the U.S over the two weeks ended in July 3. The World Health Organization, has called delta the "Fastest and fittest" variant yet, and expects it to become the dominant form of the disease worldwide. If you only have one dose of a two dose vaccine you are only 33% effective coverage against Delta compared to being fully vaccinated being 88% protected against Delta. The most important thing you can do to protect yourself from Delta is to get fully vaccinated.

San José Animal Shelter Spotlight
Meet Sassy! Sweet Sassy is a spayed cat and is 12 years old currently residing at the San José Animal Shelter, on the search to find her new family! Currently over 16 dogs and 100 cats, as well as a number of other assorted animals and special needs animals await adoption at the City's local Shelter. It is important to adopt because it saves already existing animals in desperate need of new and loving families. Simultaneously it is more ethical than purchasing a pet from breeders because adopting allows for more animal lives to be saved rather than having animals be produced by breeders who then create animal overpopulation that often results in euthanasia or animal cruelty. Lastly, adoption tends to be much more financial viable for you than purchasing from a breeder who can sell animals for up to $500+. All in all, it's great to adopt and support your local animal shelter while gaining a furry friend!

Abiding by current COVID-19 restrictions, the City's shelter has not been able to fully open to allow these animals to mingle with guests, so many animals are waiting longer periods before finding their forever home. If you're interested in adopting Danny, or any of the many cute cats at the shelter, note the A-number identification (Danny's number is A1220063) and head on over to the local shelter at 2750 Monterey Road on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays only between the hours of 10am-2pm to meet and mingle with your selected animal and test your compatibility! For dogs, come on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays between 10am and 2pm. Adoption fees have been lowered to $10 to accommodate for the increase in available pets and the need for kind owners like you to adopt a furry friend. For more information and the itinerary of adoptable animals, follow this link.

World Hepatitis Day
Councilmember Magdalena Carrasco would like to draw your attention to World Hepatitis Day. This annual day remembrance held every year on July 28th, marks both how far we have come and the distance we need to go in order to beat Hepatitis in all its forms. This year's theme is "Help Can't Wait!" With 325 million people impacted by Hepatitis worldwide and one person dying from it every 30 seconds, there is still a long road ahead of us. Councilmember Carrasco is committed to supporting community members, policies, and initiatives that work to alleviate the suffering caused by Hepatitis.
If you would like to learn more about Hepatitis and the fight against it, you can find more information at the CDC's Hepatitis website or by listening to this podcast by the American Liver Foundation. If you feel inspired to get involved in this health crisis, you can do so through the World Hepatitis Day website.
