Two Historic Councils Have Become One
The formal combination in August of two great BSA councils into one - the new Indian Waters Council - is truly a win-win for everyone in our communities and within our Scouting Family.
Both organizations have been in solid financial position and by combining volunteer and program resources and consolidating operational functions, the future is bright for our youth, families and leaders in the combined 19-county territory. There are exciting things ahead as Camp Coker and Camp Barstow will thrive in new ways, the Florence and Columbia offices/shops will remain as vibrant resources, and our staff will grow in the coming weeks and months.

Recruiting Resources Abound
The first part of the school year is the best time to introduce new families to Scouting! Each of our eight districts has been utilizing and resources (flyers, yard signs, stickers, popup tents/tables) to help your local Scouting programs get the word out. You can, too!
Everyone is encouraged to use these resources at town events and at local schools during open houses, community events and through social media. Most things are available at the Florence and Columbia Scout Service Centers where we can personalize BSA flyers with your local recruitment dates, etc. We also encourage working through your local district team (volunteers and staff) for your recruitment needs.

Court Approves BSA Bankruptcy Plan
On Thursday, September 8th, the BSA received the exciting news that its Plan of Reorganization was approved by the Bankruptcy Court. With an appeal process expected in District Court, that brings the national BSA organization only one step away from emergence from Chapter 11. In addition to approval from Judge Silverstein, the BSA’s Plan of Reorganization has also won overwhelming support from claimants in the case, with more than 85% voting to approve it.

Youth Leaders Are Building a
Strong Future for OA
Just as two historic BSA councils have come together as one, the process has begun to combine their respective lodges for Scouting's National Honor Society, the Order of the Arrow: the Santee Lodge from the Pee Dee region and the Muscogee Lodge from South Carolina's Midlands. With both lodges steeped in tradition, heritage, and alumni, there are complex and important topics to address, but the driving focus is for all recommendations and decisions to be made by the youth members, just as it is in all OA functions.
Santee Lodge Chief Thomas S. and Muscogee Lodge Chief Grace F. are heading-up a task force of ten youth leaders supported by a small handful of adults from both lodges and the national OA. The youth members of the group will be making recommendations to the voting membership (youth) of both lodges in areas such as the name, bylaws, totem(s), and calendar of the new lodge. The youth voting and official combining of the lodges are expected to take place several months from now.
Each lodge is conducting a Fall Fellowship Weekend in October and their members are encouraged to participate. The Santee Lodge's weekend will include an Alumni Reunion, just as the Muscogee Lodge's did over the summer. Here are links to register:

Spooky Scouting Events Ahead!
There will be many opportunities this fall for your Scouting unit to enjoy the coming of fall and the great outdoors and the fun and excitement of the season.
For Cub Scouts and their families, the Chicora District will host the Cub-O-Ween on October 14-16 at Thompson Farm in Conway, SC! There will also be a Haunted Forest Weekend on October 21-23 at Camp Barstow on Lake Murray in Batesburg, SC! Both weekends guarantee to have fun and excitement for your Cubs with a variety of activities including shooting sports.
For our Troops and Crews there will be a Zombie Ops Camporee on November 11-13 at Camp Barstow. Come enjoy the fun as you "walk among the Pirate Zombies".

Commissioner College
Join us for the Commissioner College at Camp Coker in Society Hill, SC on November 12, 2022. Open to adult volunteers with an interest in helping to facilitate better Scouting in our units. Degrees conferred include Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate Level Scouting, as well as those considered Continuing Education.
Please see requirements/prerequisites for each degree in Commissioner Science on the registration page.
Classes will begin at 9:00am and end around 4:45pm. Please arrive at the Training Center between 8:45am and 9:00am for check in.
Lunch is included and will be sandwiches with chips. If you have any dietary restrictions please contact Diane Bauer @ dianebauersc@gmail.com.
