Last week, NCRCD hosted our annual Farm Day event for more than 600 local 2nd and 3rd graders from 36 classrooms with support from 90 FFA students from Bear River and Nevada Union High Schools. Students, teachers, chaperones and exhibitors enjoyed a fun-filled day dedicated to exploring various aspect of agriculture.
“Organizations, businesses, and community members gathered to showcase everything from beekeeping to livestock husbandry, creating an engaging environment for students eager to learn,” said Alyssa Mayo, Trainer and Operator at West Coast Equine Sports Therapy.
Mayo further noted, “Events like Farm Day provide the next generation with opportunities to explore future career paths, while also instilling hope for the continuation of our community’s agricultural traditions.”
In addition to Farm Day, the RCD offers several youth programs aimed at fostering an interest in agriculture and environmental stewardship:

Range Camp | Four (4) $750 scholarships for local high school students attending this environmental science and management camp at the University of California's Elkus Youth Ranch in Half Moon Bay

School Garden Micro-Grants | Grants of up to $5,000 for Nevada County schools to establish or enhance children's garden projects, promoting hands-on learning and environmental awareness.

Ag Scholarship Program | Renewable scholarships for local high school graduates pursuing advanced studies in agricultural and conservation-related fields, including: agricultural engineering, forestry, and Ag communications, among others. Students can apply through their high school scholarship programs.
