Chris Buck's Modern Woodmen office was excited to participate in the Find the Bulldog event again this year. The event ran the entire month of July and then we held a raffle at our Mason office. Congratulations to winners Joel Kemper and Lillyana Barratt, both won a backpack that included a Mason Bulldog inside! TRUE COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION BREAKS GROUND
AT NEW BRANCH LOCATION
THE NEW STAND-ALONE BRANCH LOCATION ON PARNALL ROAD WILL PROVIDE MEMBERS WITH MORE ACCESSIBILITY.
JACKSON, MI, September 1, 2022 – TRUE Community Credit Union broke ground today for its newest branch, located at 1309 W Parnall Rd. in Jackson. The new stand-alone site will be 2,570 square feet in size and will be the new home of the Country Market branch.
Speakers at today’s ceremony included TRUE Community Credit Union President and CEO Chrissy Siders, Chief Experience Officer Sarah Ermatinger, and Board Chairman Quentin Guinn.
“We are so excited to expand our footprint by relocating our Country Market branch a hop, skip, and a jump down the road to our new Parnall Road location,” said Siders. “This expansion will allow us to provide expanded products and services to our loyal members, including a bigger and better branch, conveniently located with enhanced technology to meet our members’ needs.”
In addition to the current branch features members have, the new Parnall Road branch will offer enhanced technology to make it more accessible to members, including four video drive-thru tellers. Members can use the video tellers to communicate with a TRUE Community Credit Union teller via video during business hours, and can also be used as ATMs 24 hours a day. TRUE Community Credit Union plans to open the new location in 2023.
TRUE Community Credit Union has 12 branch locations in Jackson, Ingham, and Washtenaw counties and welcomes members who live, work, worship, or attend school in Michigan.

Thanks to funding from Jackson's Community Grant, Michigan State Funding through Michigan CASA, and Barry County United Way we've been able to focus renewed strategic efforts on recruiting in 2022. On Wednesday, September 7th we began our largest CASA New Volunteer Training with 21 participants! We are very excited for each and every one of these individuals and the wide variety of backgrounds, passion, expertise, and life experience they bring to our team. Hair-a-Thon to Address Childhood Cancer

“Service clubs are the heart of our communities, says Doug Klein, Mason Lions Club secretary. “So many people depend on our service clubs for help, and we know that we can make an even bigger impact when we work together,” he added.
Like they did last year, these Mason area service clubs will come together to support an existing local service project. They will encourage Mason area residents to participate by supporting the Sparrow Children’s Center’s 8th annual Hair-a-Thon, which coincides with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This effort collects hundreds of hair donations that make up wigs for kids who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment or other causes. This year’s donations will go to two organizations, Maggie’s Wigs 4 Kids of Michigan and Children with Hair Loss. Both provide free wigs to children.
Mason service clubs will collect monetary donations all week and encourage hair donations. Donors can also arrange to have their hair cut by their own stylist, place the dry hair in a plastic bag, then drop it off to volunteers stationed in front of the Sparrow Plaza Building, 1140 E. Michigan Ave., across from Sparrow Hospital on Saturday, September 17th from 9 a.m. to noon.
“There’s a lot of satisfaction in doing this event. It’s my favorite day of the year,” said organizer Cindy Meteyer, Sparrow Pediatric Oncology Nurse Practitioner. “By doing this we’re showing support for our own pediatric oncology patients who are being treated at Sparrow. They know that we care about them. They know that the community supports them.”
During the fundraising period, each club is encouraged to put its own spin on the joint project. All will raise funds and encourage hair donations for the Sparrow Hair-a-Thon – but they may choose to do so in slightly different ways. For example, the Mason Optimist Club will have information and a donation jar at the Thursday Night Live Courthouse Concert on September 15 and the Lions Club will have a fundraising booth at the Down Home Days Courthouse Show on Saturday, September 17.
“I hope many folks will join us as we celebrate community together,”, says Lion Doug Klein. “We want to show the Mason area and the world why volunteers and collaboration are so important to our communities.”
“This is the second year our clubs have done “Celebrate Community” week,” he added. Last year, the Mason service clubs supported the CROP Hunger Walk in Mason on October 10, 2021 at All Saints Lutheran Church. Together they raised $1,200 to address local and global hunger and food insecurity needs through that Church World Service event. Of the local funds raised, 25% remained in Mason to help the Mason Food Bank and Meals on Wheels. Although not part of Celebrate Community” in 2022, members of the clubs will be encouraged to continue their support of this other local event again at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 9. Registration starts at 1:00 p.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church, 740 W. South Street in Mason.

The American Cancer Society is attacking cancer in many ways. From funding break through research for new treatments, to providing patient programs and services, to advocating for policy changes that saves lives, and more. We are doing everything in our power to create a world without cancer. And we need more help from people like you. Relay For Life fundraising is a great way to make a difference in the fight against cancer. And a fun event too.
The ACS Relay For Life of Greater Lansing communities will be held on Friday September 23, opening ceremony at 6pm, to the closing ceremony at 10am Saturday at the Corrigan Oil Speedway in Mason MI. We celebrate our Survivors with a special reception and walk between 7pm and 7:30pm with check-in beginning at 5pm. To register as a Survivor and more information, or online donations, our web site is relayforlife.org/greaterlansingmi Other planned activities Friday night include, Silent Auction, Dessert Auction, 50/50 raffle and games and snacks at our team campsites. Winning ticket for the 50/50 drawing will be Saturday at 9am. The lighting of the Luminaries will be at dusk and memorials soon after.
Rain or shine, please join us as we walk the racetrack to raise awareness and funds to ensure our Survivors have more birthdays.

Mason’s Pink School Museum Restoration Completed |

Mason Area Historical Society members are eager to share the results of the recent restoration of the exterior of their historic one-room schoolhouse on two upcoming weekends. The Pink School at 707 W. Ash Street will be open on Saturday, September 17 and again on Saturday, October 1, 2022 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. for each of those days.
The 1854 school was moved to Mason’s westside Bicentennial Park from a rural location just outside of Mason at the corner of Columbia and College Roads in 1976 to serve as a museum. The interior of the school is fully furnished to look like one of the multi-grade elementary schools that operated for over 150 years in Ingham County.
The public is invited to stop in and tour the school museum. The restoration project was done by a local contractor, Community Building Services, Inc. over the summer. It involved repair and reconstruction of exterior woodwork and siding -- along with repainting the entire school.
Many repainting projects have been undertaken over the 168 years the school has been in existence. It was first painted pink well over 150 years ago by combining red paint commonly used for barns with white paint commonly used for houses in the area.
“We’re so grateful that the community stepped up to help us raise over $12,000 in our capital campaign this year to cover the cost of the renovation,” says Doug Klein, president of the Mason Area Historical Society. “Painting alone this time just wasn’t enough to bring “The Pink” back to where it needs to be to last through the coming decades,” he added.

Lou Ann Shaw, proprietress of "Altered Attitude", began her journey in Asheville, N.C. in 2012 creating upcycled clothing, journals, and cards. Shortly after, she returned to Michigan where she sold her creations in Northern Michigan gift shops, Old Town, Lansing, and Etsy. Most recently, her artwork was available at Local Farm Alliance in Mason - where her witch hats sold out in 2021.
In 2022, Friendships with Renaissance Festival performers have since inspired Lou Ann to expand creations to include masks, boots and gloves with a fantasy inspired theme. Mason Chamber's Witches on the Town event provides the perfect venue to market her unique style of costumes and accessories.
Lou Ann is most grateful to Keans, who have sponsored this pop-up shoppe. Previews of Altered Attitude costumes will be on display in the store in August and September.....be sure to check it out.
