WKU will receive $150,000 for program to support 100 new teachers in region
WKU’s College of Education and Behavioral Sciences has been granted funds to provide support for 100 first year Kentucky teachers that have been impacted by COVID-19 in Bowling Green, Warren County, Todd County, and Daviess County.

Newly licensed teachers are both managing the learning loss of students as a function of COVID-19 and dealing with an unusual end to their undergraduate career. Many of these teachers, then-students, completed their final practicum and student teaching experiences in hybrid and/or virtual teaching environments. While these different experiences served to enrich the pedagogical practices that are consistent with a changing educational landscape, it also prevented the then-students from receiving a rigorous, in-person student teaching experience.

The $150,000 of funds from the Kentucky Department of Education will provide professional development and mentoring to support new teachers whose preparation and induction has been impacted by COVID-19.
WKU awarded $100,000 grant to expand programs for educator diversity
WKU has been awarded a $100,000 grant to expand scholarship programs that help diverse students become teachers and address the shortage of teachers from underrepresented backgrounds in Kentucky.

The current Educator Diversity Program at WKU, The GameChangers, started in summer 2020 in partnership with Bowling Green Independent School District (BGISD) and Warren County Public Schools (WCPS). Students in the program complete field and student teaching experiences within the partner district, and receive mentoring, advising, as well as tutoring through WKU Intercultural Student Enrichment (ISEC) Center, the WKU Literacy Center, the Academic and Career Development Center (ACDC), the Office of Professional Education Services, and the WKU Office of Financial Aid. All program participants are supported through extensive tuition scholarships. All CEPD funds will be used to provide tuition scholarships to program participants.

Update from the Provost: ONE WKU Inclusive Teaching Academy
Dear Colleagues,

I am happy to announce the launch of applications for the ONE WKU Inclusive Teaching Academy (ITA). The ITA is the creation of CITL’s Community of Practice Fellows: Fabián Alvarez, Monica Burke, Nicholas Fortune, Kimberly Green, Michelle Jones, and Gayle Mallinger. Together, the four-module academy is designed to help anyone interested in the fundamental principles of equitable, inclusive, and culturally responsive pedagogy. To read more about the purpose, goals, and structure of the Inclusive Teaching Academy, please visit this webpage.

The inaugural cohort will be limited to 15 participants who will belong to a community of peers with shared interests in inclusive teaching. Regardless of your level of experience with culturally responsive pedagogy, the ITA provides a space where you can share experiences, experiment with evidence-based practices, build skills, and reflect on your role as an educator. The ITA will commence in January 2022 and conclude in May 2022.
