Adopt A Pet Today from the Lassen County Animal Shelter – Kayla
Lassen County Animal Shelter’s feature of the week is Kayla!

Kayla arrived at the shelter as a stray, so her past history is unknown. However, staff has been getting to know Kayla better over the length of her stay and it seems unanimous that Kayla is simply adorable.

Don’t let her short legs fool you, she has hops and can easily jump up to a person’s middle. It’s a habit she needs to work on, which can be done with consistent positive reward training; she is food motivated and very attentive.
Additionally, Kayla has a big alpha girl ego. She would do best as an only dog and staff recommends children in the house be 12+.

Kayla is estimated to be about 7 months old and staff thinks she is a Corgi mix. This cutie pie will be spayed, heartworm tested, and brought up to date on her vaccinations on Monday, 2/14. If interested in meeting Kayla, please call the Lassen County Animal Shelter at 530.257.9200.
Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Current shelter hours during the COVID-19 pandemic are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 257-9200.

Lassen Fire Safe Council Seeks Landowners Interested in Dixie and Beckwourth Fire Reforestation Projects
Lassen Fire Safe Council is applying for another round of Cal-FIRE Forest Health Grants focused on reforesting lands within last year’s local fire footprints. One of these grants will be the Dixie Fire East Reforestation Project.

The Dixie Fire East project includes land impacted by the Beckwourth Complex fires, including lands within the wildland urban interface zones in vicinity of the communities of Susanville, Janesville, Milford and Doyle in Eastern Lassen and Plumas Counties.
Last year, LFSC was awarded their first reforestation funds to restore the damage done from the Hog and Sheep Fires that impacted the outskirts of Susanville, CA in 2020. As those projects successfully move forward, LFSC has decided to expand their reforestation efforts and address the catastrophic impacts of the 2021 Dixie and Beckwourth Complex Fires.

If you are interested in learning more, and potentially wish to sign up for reforestation treatments, please contact Tom Esgate, LFSC Managing Director by March 2nd, 2022. LFSC will attempt to include as many landowners as possible in their grant application.

Esgate can be reached at (530) 310-0146 or tom.esgate@gmail.com.

Aerial Mapping of Forest Area
February 14, 1946

Aerial mapping is now being used to complete a new map of the Lassen national forest. Pictures of this area were taken from airplanes in 1941, but due to the war and the need for trained map men by the army and navy, work was abandoned until now.

The area is divided into strips, and a plane flies usually at 20,000 feet along each strip, taking pictures which overlap at least 60 percent. Uniform prints are made, locating distinguishing points and the prints matched into a mosaic. Translation is made to show roads and springs, elevations and streams, timber and terrain of an accurate and complete map.

Several thousand pictures are being made for the Lassen forest. Each day’s flight shots are marked with the sequence, date, flight number and other identification.
