Welcome to the newest classes of master and PhD students who all had their orientation in Macon last week.

By the Numbers:
  • PhD in Rural Health Sciences: 2 students
  • MS in Biomedical Sciences: 8 students
  • MS in Preclinical Sciences: 41 students
  • Master of Family Therapy: 54 students (record enrollment!)
Bonzo Reddick, MD, MPH, FAAFP, chair of community medicine in Savannah, recently spoke at an event at Beach High School where he introduced keynote speaker, Dr. Jill Biden. Dr. Biden was visiting the school as part of the White House's nationwide campaign to increase education and outreach about COVID-19 vaccinations. Dr. Reddick continues to serve on the Mayor of Savannah's COVID-19 Medical Advisory Task Force, as well as the Medical Advisory Committee for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.

Social Media as a Resident, Medical Student, and Beyond
Please join NEJM Resident 360 for a discussion about the opportunities and associated risks of social media usage as a resident and beyond. This ongoing discussion is active now through September 1.

Class of 2024 Summer Research
In order to identify student research opportunities, head of student research Gretchen Bentz, PhD, is asking for all MS2s who completed research projects outside of MUSM during the summer to share the details via this form.
National Hispanic Health Foundation Scholarship
The National Hispanic Health Foundation’s (NHHF) Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship application is open now through September 24.

Bear Health Educators
The Bear Health Educators (BEH) program is inviting medical students to speak to the BEH class on November 9 at 5pm about the effects of tobacco, nicotine, and vaping. BEH trains undergrads to help their fellow students maintain healthy habits in college. Please email Dr. Carol Bokros or Dr. Nichole Casaceli to learn more and volunteer.
Interreligious Dialogue: Religion and Health
Dr. Robert N. Nash of the McAfee School of Theology and Dr. Brian Childs would like to host a meeting of medical and theological students to discuss the relationship between religion and health. They are working to determine a date and time. The event will be held via Zoom on a Tuesday afternoon in September or October. Email Dr. Childs if you are interested and can be available on a Tuesday between 1:30 and 3:30pm. This invitation is open to all medical students. This event may be used as a basis for a more formal relationship between the medical school and school of theology. While voluntary, a student can note participation on their CV.

House Advisory Meeting

Join us for the first house advisory meeting of the year. This laidback meeting will include icebreakers, social time, and the opportunity to ask your upperclassmen questions. All MD students are invited, but M1s and M2s are strongly encouraged to attend. Locations to be announced soon.
White Coat Ceremony
September 11 | 10 am EST
Join us for the Class of 2025 White Coat Ceremony where they will be welcomed into the medical community donning their first white coats. One ceremony will be held for all three campuses at Hawkins Arena in Macon.
MUSM Research Seminar Series

Join Jacqueline McGinty, PhD, director of the Medical University of South Carolina Brain Research Institute, as she presents her latest findings from her lab regarding the neuroscience of drug-seeking behaviors.

ACP Women in Medicine Webinar

Vaccine Reminder
ALL students enrolled in School of Medicine programs are required to have the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by the start of the term and the second dose by August 31 (in a two-dose series) or the single dose by the start of the term. Mercer University Campus Health will be hosting vaccine clinics later this month. Make an appointment to get vaccined on the Atlanta or Macon campus.
Macon Library Renovations
The medical library on the Macon campus is being renovated through mid-October. During this time, group study rooms will be closed and other areas may be temporarily unavailable. Print reserve books are available on book carts across from the circulation desk. Anatomical models are in the entrance of the tutorial hall. Noise levels may be higher than normal. Check the Skelton Medical Library webpage for more information, resources, and progress updates.
