From One of Our Amazing Teachers
Dear Students,

I know you how hard you have worked, but there is something very important you must know. The STAAR test does not assess all of what makes each of you special and unique. The people who created these tests and score them do not know each of you the way I do, and certainly not the way your families do.

They do not know that some of you love to dance or draw. They do not see your natural talent for cheerleading or participating in the band. They do not see that your friends count on you to be there for them, that your laughter can brighten the darkest day, or that your face (believe it or not) turns red when you feel shy. They do not know that you participate in community events, wonder about the future or sometimes you help with yor little brother or sister after school. They do not know that you are kind, thoughtful, care about others, and every day you try to be your very best.

The scores you get from the test will tell you something, but they will not tell you everything. There are many ways of being smart. You are SMART! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You are enough! You are the light that brightens my day! Don't laugh, I'm telling the truth, my life centers around you. So, as you are taking this test, remember that there is no way to "test" all the amazing and awesome things that make you, YOU!

Take your time, read everything at least twice, use the strategies that you have learned, and don't doubt yourself. YOU GOT THIS!

STAAR Testing on Campus
The Boot Camp is over, and students have begun their STAAR testing. The campus is quieter than usual, since every day is a testing day. Students use laptops to access the all-online STAAR exam. Some students are eligible to receive headphones so that they can "hear" the questions as part of their intervention support. The test can take all day for some students -- and we are able to give them the time they need!

Thanks to all the faculty and staff for making our environment an effective one for learning AND for testing.
My Magic Number Is...

To prepare for STAAR, every student had at least one one-on-one meeting to discuss their goals. They created their "Magic Number" for Math and for Reading. What is the "Magic Number"? It is exactly how many correct answers a student will need to advance their score:
  • from Did Not Meet to Approaches, or
  • from Approaches to Meets, or
  • from Meets to Masters.

The halls are lined with the student's Magic Numbers! Check out one of these meetings with Principal Dr. Raney.

After STAAR, Art in a Box
The Arts Facet of the Houston Chapter of the Links, Inc. has been our supporter for several years. Under the able leadership of Advisory Board member Melanie Lawson, students participate in a fun, creative project called "Art in a Box." The Links provide the artistic support and the supplies, while The Lawson Academy provides the students and the fun! Look for the beautiful boxes on May 23rd. Thanks, ladies of the Links!

Baylee Samples, Author, is a Rising 8th Grader
I am a Grammy award for my parents
I shine bright so bright, Every word that comes out my mouth
is like a math equation, A riddle, A quote
My accomplishments reach far and wide
My lies are only told to the ice cold winter And my secrets are
told to my pet
I am only a child, but my accomplishments are only an adult
I am a human being, A god like feature, The future of this
generation
I reach the stars in the same amount of seconds I reach college
Every step I make, is just another step to victory
My country bows down to me, My world looks up to me, And My people face me
I don't bring pain or fear, I comfort my beloved one's and the same kindness they give
me
I give back, My accomplishments have helped in every way
My accomplishments, My world, My people, My generation, Depends on me

Celebrating a Recent Graduate
Kashondralynn Brown, former student of the Lawson Academy, and former Student Council President, has been an Intern in the City of Houston, Mayor's office. Recently, she presented at Houston's Earth Day and campus Principal Raney and Mrs. Gale Stewart were in attendance.

This graduate of The Lawson Academy is the first in her family to attend college! She let us know that she had received multiple college opportunities when she finished high school:
  • New York University (scholarship),
  • University of Southern California (4-year scholarship),
  • Emory University (Atlanta), Spelman College (Atlanta),
  • Wellesley College (Boston),
  • Smith College (Boston), and
  • all of Texas' public universities/colleges with automatic admission.

She is in the University of Southern California Class of 2026, planning to have a B.A. in Political Science. We are so very proud of Kashondralynn! She is an example and we hope that all our students can see themselves achieveing their own goals.

Transportation Schedule
Transportation services are a privilege which will continue only if behavior on the school bus is reasonable and safe. Schedule may change to address student rider and safety needs. All parents and bus riders must abide by the Bus Rider Contract (click the button, below).
On March 20, an updated Transportation Schedule took effect. Thanks to all parents and guardians who helped us to make this important change.
