From our editor, David Advent:
Welcome back students, staff, faculty, and all members of the FSU community for the Fall 2022 semester! With upcoming events to attend, new organizations to join, and new programs to explore, this is an exciting time to be back in-person at FSU.
In encouraging that excitement, this month's newsletter introduces you to our staff (including our awesome new GAs) and covers our upcoming Fall events, program deadlines, and general research advising to help you learn more about undergraduate research.
Of particular highlight from this month's newsletter is the 2022 President's Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence. Happening on September 22, 2022, the President's Showcase is one of our most prestigious events and showcases the summer research projects that IDEA Grant and Tech Fellows students completed. If you are new to FSU and undergraduate research, attending the showcase is a great way to learn more about the undergraduate research being conducted at FSU and to get inspired to start your research journey!
From all of us at the CRE, welcome back to FSU! We hope that you will come visit us on the 3rd Floor of the Honors, Scholars, and Fellows House (HSF) and stay connected with our office by following us on social media using the links at the bottom of this newsletter.

REGISTER FOR THE 2022 PRESIDENT'S SHOWCASE OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXCELLENCE!
|
|
The 2022 President's Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence returns this year as an in-person event! This event, a collaboration between the Office of the President and the Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement (CRE), is the culmination of the IDEA Grant and Tech Fellows program, and at the President’s Showcase, students share their research and creative projects through poster and oral presentations. This year’s Showcase will take place on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 5:30pm in the Honors, Scholars, and Fellows House.
The IDEA Grants are a reflection of the University's commitment to developing students as scholars and innovators and are a testament to the stimulating education undergraduates receive at Florida State. These students' projects share in the University's mission of nurturing independent thinkers, who are learning to create solutions that enrich both our campus and our larger communities. Their hard work does not end at this event, as many of the awardees will continue their intellectual pursuits through honors theses, independent study projects, graduate research, and entrepreneurial and creative work.
If you are attending this event as a student, we hope you’ll be inspired to develop your own research or creative projects. To learn more about the IDEA Grant or other programs offered by the Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement (CRE), visit our website https://cre.fsu.edu/undergradresearch/ideagrants.
The CRE also helps undergraduate students in any discipline get involved with research in their field and helps fund conference travel, find out more about research advising at cre.fsu.edu/students/getting-started.

GLOBAL SCHOLARS APPLICATION OPEN AND INFORMATION SESSIONS!
|
|
The Global Scholars application is now open! The FSU Global Scholars program offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to engage with critical questions about social impact, social justice, and social change through a combination of academic, classroom-based learning as well as independent research, internship, and/or service-learning experiences. This program will be recruiting for the 2023 cohort in Fall 2022! Please read the description of the program below for more information!
The Global Scholars program provides students with guidance and support as they pursue their own student-designed learning experiences. In the context of this program, ‘student-designed experiences’ might include:
- An online internship with a social impact organization (in the US or abroad)
- An in-person internship with a social impact organization (in the US or abroad)
- A self-directed research project focused on a social issue of your choosing in your local context
While the program does support international travel, students can opt to alternatively complete an experience remotely or within the US. The program then retains its strong ‘global’ focus by helping students situate their internship and research experiences in relation to broader global issues, interconnections, and histories.
The Global Scholars program does not directly sanction these student-designed learning experiences. Rather, the Global Scholars Program provides peer community, mentorship, curriculum, and a structure for ongoing intellectual inquiry as students pursue experiences that align with their own interests, goals, budgets, and timelines. As such, the program provides a uniquely accessible and affordable pathway through which FSU students can engage with independent opportunities for learning and professional development.
Learn more about the program and application process by attending one of our Information Sessions in HSF 3008!
