PRACTICE OF HOPE
Jesus' resurrection is a new beginning. In raising Jesus to new life, the Father begins the work of transforming the world so that there might be a new heaven and new earth, a world of peace and justice, mercy and love. That is the reason for our hope. Peter tells the first-century Christians to be ready to give an explanation for their hope. Imagine someone has asked you: what is the reason for your hope? How would you answer?
Act of Hope
O Lord God, I hope by your grace for the pardon of all my sins and after life here to gain eternal happiness because you have promised it, who are infinitely powerful, faithful, kind, and merciful. In this hope I intend to live and die. Amen.
Please continue to self-screen. Stay home if you are not feeling well and celebrate Mass with us via livestream. We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2023
|
|
First, we want to wish all our mothers a blessed and joyful Mother’s Day this weekend as well as holding up in prayer all those mothers who are no longer with us. We appreciate the daily sacrifice these moms make for their families.
We also want to thank all those who have made a gift to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. Your gift supports the many ministries such as CYO camps, Priest/Deacon resources, Youth/Young Adults, Prisons, Hospitals, seminarian education, mental health, and many, many more throughout Western Washington. For those who have yet to make a gift, we invite you to participate in this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal as part of our parish family. Our goal this year is almost $97,000 and to date, 8% of our families have responded generously with a gift.
If you have already sent in your response and this email has crossed in the mail, please accept our sincerest thanks and appreciation for participating this year!

Loving God, You have loved us with an everlasting love. You have loved us even more as a mother loved her child. Today, we give you thanks and praise for the gift of mothers.
We pray for the mothers-to-be, who are just beginning to be the bearers of new life in them, may they welcome their forthcoming child with loving anticipation and joy.
We pray for the young mothers, may they cherish their child with tender care and unconditional love.
We pray for the mothers who are separated from their children especially because of war, poverty, conflict, violence and for any other reasons. Comfort them, strengthen their hope, and let them feel your loving embrace that wipes every tear away.
We pray for all mother-figures, those who have loved, surrounded and shaped us with motherly care and compassion.
We especially pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us, Their sacrifices and care gave us a glimpse of the extent of your love for us. Thank you for them. Grant health, blessings, and well-being for those of our mothers who are still alive.
We also remember those mothers who are no longer with us. While they live forever in our hearts and memory grant them eternal rest and reward of their labours. Amen.

FLORES DE MAYO WITH JESSE MANIBUSAN
|
|
Who's the church? WE ARE.
Where's the church? RIGHT HERE.
...and? EVERYWHERE.
What an honor and blessing it was to host Jesse Manibusan at St. John Vianney this past weekend - to be reminded during Flores de Mayo that we, the church, embody the love and compassion of Jesus and our Blessed Mother, and it is our tur.
Thank you to the Filipino Community for sharing the tradition of Flores de Mayo with us, to those who decorated Mother Mary's carosa, to the children who shared the floats they made, to the people who brought food to the reception, and to all of you who participated in prayer and song, and made Jesse feel so welcome.

Our Facilities Supervisor, Greg Leptich placed a large thorny pinecone in the garden just outside the main doors of the church for everyone to enjoy.
The tree where this cone came from grows in a residential yard along our northern fence near the paved lot and hangs over the SJV property. This is a central California species of pine known as Pinus sabiniana. It naturally lives only in the Sierra Nevada foothills and Coast Ranges. It was known as the Digger Pine, but this name is now considered derogatory to the California Native Americans, so they also call it the Gray Pine or Foothill Pine. The Native Americans used to eat the seeds and the core of the cone. This tree has some of the largest pinecones in the world, weighing up to 3 pounds each.
Many thanks to Tom Dube for his botany expertise.

EVENING OF EDUCATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO FIGHT THE STIGMA OF MENTAL ILLNESS
|
|
There are over 54 million Americans being affected by mental illness every year. These are people who are experiencing a mental illness or care about someone who is. This includes people we may know at work, our neighborhood and/or our church. The stigma of mental illness can cause people to isolate which can makes things worse. As part of Mental Health Awareness month, the HFK Mental Health ministry has put together a panel of professionals in the mental health field and people who are living with a mental health diagnosis. They will speak about their experiences and be able to answer questions so that we can learn how to end the stigma and grow in understanding.
Panel members include:
- Janie Stevens - Depression and Anxiety disorder
- Anisa Ralls M.A., L.M.H.C. - St. James Cathedral Parish Mental Health and Wellness Ministry Director
- Joe Cotton - Archdiocese Outreach Administrator and Seattle Archdiocese Mental Health Board Member
- Ellen McMahon - Psy D, MBA Meiers Clinics
- David Shaner - Counselor specializing in anxiety and depression
- Joe Stevens - member of NAMI, Archdiocesan Mental Health Board and HFK Mental Health Ministry
