Experience Immersive at The Mix Lab
The First Dolby-Certified Atmos Stage in California with ATC Speakers
where Happier than Ever and Thirteen Lives were mixed
The Mix Lab photo by: Taiyo Watanabe
This is how Billie Eilish and brother Finneas, her co-writer and producer, describe the Dolby Atmos listening experience at The Mix Lab. "Transported," "Textural," "Cool!" Her latest album, Happier Than Ever (spending 26 weeks on the US Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, becoming her second number one there after My Future) was re-recorded and mixed in Atmos for its final dub by Chris Jenkins and Sal Ojeda at The Mix Lab in Santa Monica where artists enjoy unparalleled service.

The new recording facility consists of two-rooms -- the private studio and writing room for Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated film composer Benjamin Wallfisch (Shazam!, Bladerunner: 2049 with Hans Zimmer and Hidden Figures with Zimmer and Pharrell Williams), and the commercially available mix room, The Mix Lab. The latter is the first Dolby-certified Atmos stage in California with all ATC speakers, widely considered the finest monitors in their category, and beloved by music producers world-wide. The Mix Lab is also the best Certified Atmos mix stage of its size in the world. Here you enjoy the most cutting-edge technology currently available. The facility offers an ADR/overdub booth, accessible from both main rooms, further expanding the possibilities and features a wide range of microphones and pre-amps. Besides the generous mirrored main lounge on the ground floor, the facility also offers a kitchen and private workspace on the mezzanine level, according to its designer, Peter Grueneisen who sat down with studioexpresso for an exclusive interview (below) .
We welcome all clients with a 24/7 concierge-style service, gourmet catering and valet parking," adds manager Vicki Giordano (formerly of Bridge Studios). Read more about the Mix Lab here

Birth Of A Dream Dolby-Atmos Studio: The Mix Lab
An Interview with The Designer: Peter Grueneisen of nonzero/architecture
nonzero\architecture founder and multiple TEC Award-winner Peter Grueneisen celebrated his company’s 30th anniversary in 2020 with release of an elaborate coffee table book titled Where Dreams Are Born available at Amazon. The book includes conversations with well known clients including Hans Zimmer, David Lynch,
Bruce Botnick, to name a few. "Our designs address the human desire for both the beauty and functionality of their surroundings, whether at home or at work, at leisure or in the public realm,” says the Swiss-born Grueneisen.
The Mix Lab was nominated for Creative Achievement in Studio Design in the 36th NAAM TEC Awards.

"The facility takes advantage of a classic bow-truss warehouse space, which was then meticulously designed and built out to combine its industrial vibe with a more refined European style," says Grueneisen who sat down with studioexpresso in September for this interview.

SE: Do you design differently for Atmos rooms? What are some considerations vis-a-vis room specs? Do you like to collaborate with speaker providers sooner than later or is it not as important?
PG: There are definitely some considerations for an Atmos room that go beyond a traditional room design. The ceiling and wall surround speakers do take more space and the room height as well as the footprint does get affected by their placement. Besides the simple physical aspect of providing enough height and circulation space in a room, we need to pay attention to the ADA codes, as well as working with Dolby and the speaker vendors to find the best placement for each speaker, including the ideal number of components and their relationship to the room and to the mix position.
It is always a good idea to get all of the parties, speaker providers, users, Dolby, system integrators, involved as early as possible in the process.
Acoustic treatments in the rooms also need to take into account that speakers now aim into every direction and that it is not a simple front to back setup anymore, like it would be in a stereo room, or even an earlier surround sound setup.
SE: Aesthetics like The Mix Lab's deep, 'blue' lighting ... How much of this identity comes up in your initial conversations with clients?
PG: Actually, an interesting fact is that the colors in the Mix Lab can be adjusted to any desirable color in the spectrum. But the blue you see in the pictures reflects Ben’s and the facility's identity, so it is pretty much set to that color and stays there. The visual design, including gate lighting, is an important aspect of any space we work on, so it is always an important part of the conversation. Being architects, we place a lot of importance on the spatial quality and the finishes and detailing of any room and of any building. It is an integral part of the design and complements the sound. Every project incorporates some aspect of the client’s identity and wishes and of our own sensibility. The collaboration between the different players is what usually leads to the end result and should reflect everybody’s input and preferences.

SE: Composers are like sonic architects; they organize teams around their singular vision. Would you say having that in common with composers makes it easier or harder to work with them?
PG: We have been working with many film composers over the last few years and we have found it to be an incredibly fertile ground for collaboration. Much of that owing to exactly what you pointed out, there are many similarities between what we do. I think overall it makes it easier for us to work with composers, since they are so used to navigating the whole range of a project from the artistic to the practical, from the team and project management to the financial aspects. There are many parallels between architecture and film, especially when focused on the sound.

SE: Peter you celebrated 30 years in architecture in 2020, what are some trends in studio design that are different from when you started?
PG: There are lot of developments, the evolution has been very interesting. While the basic physics and most of the materials are the same, there has been the general move away from ‘pure' music rooms to a much more multi-media oriented approach, as well as the transition from analog to digital in every respect. The music and movie industries have changed too, books can be written about all of the things that have changed. For us, the interesting thing is that it does evolve and figuring out how to respond to the latest developments is one of the most interesting parts of the work.

SE: Over the years you have worked with some legendary photographers - Julius Shulman, Edward Colver.... What's your criteria for choosing a photographer for a specific project? Do you specify or recommend a photographer? Who did the photos for The Mix Lab?
PG: We do like to get involved in the selection of the photographers for our projects, whenever possible. Some of the smaller rooms we have actually photographed ourselves, but it is a very difficult thing to do and whenever we have the budget, we like to work with professionals. The results are much better! Architectural photography is very different from snapping casual pictures, or any other type of photography, and we prefer to work with someone who specializes in that field. For a long time we have worked with Juergen Nogai, who was Julius Shulman’s working partner during his last years of work. After Juergen moved back to Europe, we have been working a lot with Taiyo Watanabe, who is an architect himself. That really helps the sensibility and there are a lot of inherent aspects we don’t have to discuss, since we are already thinking along the same lines. Taiyo did do the pictures for the Mix Lab.

THE ATC SCS70 PRO IS HERE!
AN ACTIVE SUBWOOFER WITH EXCEPTIONAL LOW-FREQUENCY DETAIL AND FLEXIBLE SETTINGS

TransAudio Group, U.S. distributer of the finest professional recording equipment in the world, is pleased to announce the new ATC SCS70 Pro, a compact, ultra-high performance subwoofer using ATC’s first, in-house-designed and built sub driver.

Designed by Billy Woodman and his team of engineers, this new 12-inch sub driver delivers the kind of honest and detailed low-frequency information that professionals have come to expect from ATC and, without the use of EQ or porting, still delivering deep bass down to 20Hz. The ATC SCS70 Pro is the perfect partner to ATC’s legendary line of active monitors and can be deployed as a single, in pairs, or larger multiples to suit a huge range of rooms and applications/formats. ATC SCS70s can be daisy-chained for scalable performance and any number of them can be muted with a single footswitch. Flexible gain, and multiple low-pass frequencies allow users to optimize the ATC SCS70 in any room with any ATC monitor, as well as universal application with other brands of monitors.

“Billy and his team have meticulously engineered this sub from the ground up, including a brand-new driver with a neodymium motor and matched amplifier to give the active ATC SCS70 the same kind of brutal honesty in the sub frequencies that ATC is so famous for in the midrange,” said Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group. “Engineers are dealing with greater and greater demand from artists for more sub output and they need accuracy down low. Subwoofers can be a source of distortion, making the mixing or mastering process a guessing game. Now an ATC system, complete with the one or two SCS70 subs, can deliver full bandwidth audio for any genre, enabling superior translation on any system it gets played on, from ear buds to home hi-fi to clubs and everything in-between. Other subwoofers rely on EQ and poorly implemented ports, transmission lines or passive radiators to boost low end and make their subs sound impressive. These ideas are audibly appealing, but they give audio professionals a cloudy impression of what’s going on down there. Just as engineers have come to trust ATC’s full-range monitors for translation, the new ATC SCS70 will do the same in the sub frequencies.”

Both the acoustic and electronic properties of the ATC SCS70 are designed to deliver uncompromised performance and sub bass fidelity. The new 12-inch SS75-314SC neodymium sub driver is housed inside a sealed cabinet (i.e., an infinite baffle) that is deliberately heavy to minimize cabinet interaction (the entire 18 x 22 x 20-inch box weighs in at 97 pounds). Consistent with other ATC designs, the driver uses a short coil inside an exceptionally long magnetic gap to produce high sound pressure levels with remarkably low distortion. A new Grounded Source MOSFET based Class A-B convection-cooled amplifier is expressly designed to work with this sub driver and accepts balanced input from either mono or stereo sources. Buffered and unfiltered balanced throughputs provide connection to additional ATC SCS70 subwoofers and/or full-range monitors.

The ATC SCS70 Pro is replete with features that allow it to merge seamlessly into any coupled room-loudspeaker scenario. These features include 21dB of gain control, four low-pass frequencies, and a polarity reversal that, together with 180-degrees of continuously variable phase, allow complete 360-degrees of continuous phase shift. The four low-pass frequencies are set at 50, 65, 80, and 320 Hz (off) and delivered via a fourth-order Linkwitz Riley filter. The 320 Hz (off) setting allows users to implement their own external processing. Fault monitoring protects the ATC SCS70 in the event of extreme temperature or amplifier dc offset, and an ATC Active FET Momentary Gain Reduction protection limiter prevents amp overload. Users can toggle an entire system of ATC SCS70 Pros on or off via a daisy-chained single latching footswitch (without affecting the thru jacks to the full-range monitors). Two LEDs on the front panel indicate power on, limiting, and mute/unmute. Maximum sound pressure is 110dB continuous, 116dB peak, and total output power is 300W into 8 Ohms. Amplifier total harmonic distortion plus noise is less than 0.003%.

Paul Cardall Records with Sanken 100K Mics by Five/Four Productions
Paul Cardall is a popular pianist known for his original compositions and arrangements of various hymns. His music is frequently categorized as Classical, Christian and New Age. Cardall has had several recordings debut at #1 on top Billboard charts. In addition to his recording career, Cardall founded Stone Angel Music in 1999, which produced a catalogue of recordings by other similar artists. Cardall recently recorded new work with Five/Four Productions(r) at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio (Photo by Robert Friedrich). Recording engineer Robert Friedrich helmed the project with Sanken CO-100K and CUX-100K microphones capable of the extremely high-resolution recording of Cardall, whose work has more than three billion streams and growing.
"In many ways, this is a tribute and continuation of the tradition of the 5/4 style of engineering that Michael Bishop and I developed with the new capability of Sanken mics," Friedrich explained. "Michael had recorded 100K sessions at Oberlin, which I mastered. This time I used two CO-100K mics as close mics, complementing a Royer SF12. I also used three Sanken's as the main LCR in a classical mic configuration. The L/R are the CUX-100's in the far-cardioid setting and a CO-100K in the center. Paul's performance was also captured with four 4K cameras and was discretely miked for Dolby Atmos."

Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, has an enrollment of 3,000 undergraduate students and is known for its education, business, neuroscience, and music programs. BW is home to the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music, which holds the title for the oldest collegiate Bach Festival in the nation. The college's radio station WBWC is known throughout the Cleveland area.

Introducing The Daking Mic Pre 4T
Soulful Circuitry Meets Proprietary Problem-Solving Features
Above: Brad Lunde with Geoff Daking
Perfect for studio, live, and broadcast audio recording, the Mic-Pre 4T features 4 high end pre-amps in 1U of rack space, Jensen input/output transformers, and has now added variable high pass filters on each channel.
The new Daking Mic Pre 4T is designed for the widest possible range of inputs, from vintage, low-gain ribbons, to high-gain modern condensers, and instruments via the DI. Avoiding clipping and distortion is critical for error-free capture of that once-in-a-lifetime magical performance. Daking’s variable low pass filters make it possible to have a different low-filter setting on each of the four input channels, preventing unwanted over saturation of the transformer. "The Instrument DI passes through the ultra linear Jensen output transformer for one of the best DI’s around. The Daking Mic Pre 4T is the one pre-amp that’s right for many different sources, rather than the costly “different pre-amps for different sources” approach," says Brad Lunde. Watch the YouTube interview with Trans Audio Group's Brad Lunde, where Geoff Daking goes into great detail on the design and features of the new Mic-Pre 4T. Daking Audio gear is built in USA and distributed by TransAudio Group.
Built in the USA, Daking uses only high-end parts like Jensen input and output transformers in a high-end design using all-discrete transistor Class A circuitry. How's that for Soulful circuitry meets proprietary problem-solving features? Order yours today!

AURATONE's 1st -EVER *ACTIVE*5C SUPER SOUND CUBE

Anyone who has ever perused glossy glamour shots of famous studios, past or present, has seen the unmistakable six-inch Auratone 5C Sound Cubes atop meter bridges, safely guiding engineers down the narrow and rocky path to mid-range nirvana. Indeed, its involvement in innumerable hits earned the 5C Sound Cube a NAMM TEC Hall of Fame Award in 2016.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Auratone and its US distributor, TransAudio Group, introduced the first-ever Active 5C at NAMM 2022, June 3-5 in Anaheim, CA. The mono amplifier is designed and built in Europe in collaboration with the famous hardware manufacturer, Bettermaker. A careful R&D process has been implemented to maintain the original characteristics of the 5C, utilizing the same amplifier design from the NAMM TEC Award winning A2-30 amplifier.

“Auratone has been receiving requests for an active version of their flagship sound cubes for a long time. We were happy to get boutique Polish manufacturer Bettermaker together with Alex Jacobsen, owner, and grandson of founder Jack Wilson, for the perfectly matched A2-30 amplifier. Now, the two companies have collaborated to get a mono amplifier that contains the guts and soul of the A2-30 into each chassis for the active version,” says Brad Lunde, founder, and president of TransAudio Group.

Like the other 5C variants, the Auratone Active 5C is made in the USA. It delivers 50W into its internal 8ohm load via a balanced combo XLR/TRS input. Like the passive version, it reproduces between 80 and 15,000 Hz via a 4.5inch driver with a signal to noise ratio in excess of 100dB. In addition to an input, the rear of the box provides an on/off switch and power LED. The active 5C has Integrated overcurrent, overheated, and short protection in the rare event of electrical trouble.

The Auratone Active 5C is now shipping • MAP: $749/pair

DRAWMER INTRODUCES THE 1972 DUAL MIC/LINE/INSTRUMENT PRE-AMPLIFIER

TransAudio Group, the U.S. distributor for Drawmer, is introducing Ivor Drawmer's all new 1972 Dual Mic/Line and Instrument Mic Preamplifier. The unit distinguishes itself with its flexibility, unique feature set and simple operation, and is at home in both professional studio and live sound applications. As with all Drawmer products, the 1972 is hand-crafted in the UK with an all-steel chassis for bullet-proof reliability. Noted Brad Lunde, president of TransAudio Group and the U.S. distributor of Drawmer. “As usual, Drawmer studied the marketplace and engineered an affordable dual mic pre with one-of-a-kind features to meet today’s intricate recording issues and live sound applications. The 1972 is destined to be a staple piece of gear in every audio rack.”
The 1972 Dual Mic/Line and Instrument Mic Preamplifier sports two identical channels of analog pre-amplification in a 1U rack chassis. Key to the 1972's versatility is the Select input source switch. It has six switch positions to cover the 1/4-inch front panel Instrument input jack for guitars, basses, or electronic keyboards, and five more positions covering separate rear panel XLR input jacks for microphones with or without 48-volt phantom powering or Line level input sources. Other switch positions are provided to match microphones with 200, 600 or 2,400-ohm impedances. Low impedance passive ribbon microphones sound best when impedance-matched correctly.
Up to 66dB of ultra-clean gain in 6dB steps is provided by THAT Corporation technology using a 12-position rotary Gain switch. The switch's detents make it easy to recall settings from previous sessions – perfect for rapid changeovers in live recordings – when there is no time to reset record levels. Input levels are monitored on a simple, five LED color-coded meter directly above the Input Gain control and a compact analog VU meter monitors the final Output level.

Front panel controls continue with a Phase reverse button and the switchable Lo and HiCut filter section that also works as a very smooth bandpass filter. The LoCut section is switchable in/out and is a 12db/octave filter with the ability to sweep any frequency between 15Hz to 350Hz. Having a fully-adjustable LoCut filter means you may fine tune and negate just enough low-frequency rumble, stage vibration – even traffic noise without affecting the natural, musical bass frequencies. The HiCut or low-pass half of this filter ranges from 1.5kHz to 20kHz and is also a 12dB/Octave design. It works great to remove system hiss or even sibilance. Either section can be used separately.

Unique to the 1972 is Lift a low-level, upward expander. When switched in, Lift adds gain to input signals below a level of -30dB and continues adding gain until a level of 0dB is reached. Furthermore, starting at -30dB, the amount of added gain is gradually reduced as the average level approaches 0dB. Lift is the ultimate, smooth, automatic, gain-riding tool. You will never have "under recorded" audio again with this natural sounding feature. It’s useful for studio, TV sound, conferences, and public address system recordings. Off-mic and poor microphone techniques are all helped with Lift.

Another standout feature of 1972 is Shape, basically used as an instant sonic fixer. It is comprised of two separate, fixed-frequency tilt or see-saw equalizers both centered at 500Hz. Low Shape will provide up to a 2.5dB boost at 40Hz and, at the same time, attenuates -2.5dB at 10kHz. Conversely, Hi Shape reduces by 2.5dB at 40Hz and, at the same time, boosts up to 2.5dB at 10kHz. With both low and high Shape buttons engaged, a pleasant and very useful "scoop" centered at 500Hz is generated. Great for a harsh and "honky" sounding overall music mix.

MSRP: $1149 • The Drawmer 1972 is now available.

Everyone from Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Bon Jovi, to Madonna, Paul Simon, Chic, David Bowie and Lady Gaga has recorded at the Power Station – including the super-group that borrowed its name. While the space changed hands in the late ’90s and was rechristened as Avatar Studios, it recently reopened as the Power Station under the auspices of Berklee College of Music.

Now acclaimed drummer Pat Petrillo showcases the vast spectrum of contemporary groove music on the second album by his explosive Big Rhythm Band. The project features special guests Nile Rodgers, John Popper, Oz Noy and Glen Burtnik, The Power Station Sessions runs the gamut from New Orleans R&B, to blues, and funk.
“The studio has a lot to do with the vibe of a record. It’s the incubator of the sound. The wood that it’s built with, the flooring, the soaring ceilings, the sound absorption all come together to create the quality of that sound. The room is everything…and this studio has some serious mojo!” says Petrillo.

The all-star collection of guest artists bring their own unique authenticity to the proceedings: Guitarists Nile Rodgers (Chic), Felicia Collins (Late Show with David Letterman) and Oz Noy (Chris Botti, Mike Stern); Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; saxophonist and Saturday Night Live bandleader Lenny Pickett; and famed singer-songwriter Glen Burtnik (Styx). The band also features versatile keyboardist David Cook, bassist Scott Ambush (Spyro Gyra), trumpeter Steve Jankowski (who also did wind arrangements), Tom Timko on saxes, and Plinky Giglio with additional production, B3 Organ, and mixing. “Although it’s a Contemporary Instrumental record, I would almost call this an Americana record,” says Petrillo.

In addition to being an in-demand live artist and session drummer, Petrillo is also an esteemed educator who has created popular instructional videos for Hudson Music, and the Drumeo website. Petrillo endorses Ludwig Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Vic Firth Drumsticks, and Earthworks Microphones.

The Power Station Sessions record release show is scheduled for Sunday, October 9th at 3:00 PM at The Cutting Room, 44 East 32nd St, New York, NY. Tickets are available at www.thecuttingroomnyc.com or call 212-691-1900.

Created by original owner Steve Walter (Berklee Alumnus) and co-owner Chris Noth (Sex and the City, Law & Order, The Good Wife), the new Cutting Room continues the tradition of extraordinary live performances with a fresh new take on how a rock club and lounge should feel like.

The Guitar Center Music Foundation Education Outreach Continues
A student gets one-on-one experience on guitar with an instructor while at Jazz Hands for Autism in Los Angeles
When Antioch Speedway volunteer Larry Adams learned that kids from Antioch High School might not graduate due to not having enough elective credits, he saw an opportunity to create a class for students to broadcast the racetrack’s events to earn those missing credits. Adams came to The Guitar Center Music Foundation (GCMF) asking for audio-visual gear to help build Antioch High School’s new broadcasting program, and GCMF donated all AV equipment needed for the students. Now, these students not only get the chance to graduate but also receive hands-on experience in a field that could offer college scholarships.

GCMF is a nonprofit organization focused on granting instruments to music education and music therapy organizations. “It is our mission to give everyone the power to express themselves through music, and to keep music education alive and attainable. As we continue to partner with groups across the country, it is clear that music education is key to providing a voice and safe space to musicians and non-musicians alike. We must foster talent and encourage people of all ages to share their experiences through sound,” says, executive director, Myka Miller. According to Miller, to-date this year, GCMF has awarded over $200K in grants, impacting more than 10,000 young musicians. "Through instrument grants and donations, our goal is to ensure schools and music education programs get the resources they need to keep music alive and accessible,” adds Miller.

The ELECTRIC MOON Foundation, an online 3D and VR music and art experience organization based in Los Angeles, CA, is another grantee. Similar to GCMF, they are passionate and dedicated to sharing the healing powers of music and art and ensuring these are accessible to everyone. GCMF answered the call when they reached out about a need for instruments for their summer music camp held at Alexandria House, a transitional home for women and children in Los Angeles. At camp, children learned to play an instrument and write songs and ended with a performance in front of friends and family. Through this request, GCMF was able to gift 25 guitars to this community group.

Jazz Hands for Autism was also provided with a GCMF grant, equipping their students with new guitars, basses, and recording equipment. This talent advocacy group has supported over 200 musicians on the Autism spectrum. Located in Los Angeles, CA, Jazz Hands for Autism’s students are excelling in their music lessons. Many students are also finding success as performers, writers, and recording artists.

Casa Youth Shelter (above right) based out of Los Alamitos, CA, offers temporary emergency shelter for homeless, runaway, and abandoned youth ages 12-17. It serves and nurtures youth in crisis with shelter, counseling and support services, empowering them to come through their crisis with increased confidence, stability and tools for continued growth. The organization provides residents with music classes, for which GCMF donated several guitars and ukuleles.

Marbridge Foundation, based in Manchaca, TX, is a 200+ acre residential community that houses more than 273 adults with a wide range of cognitive disabilities. Their training and education program has a variety of classes, including drum therapy, band, painting, and more. GCMF provided an assortment of percussion instruments for these courses.

Miller concludes, “When we connect with and listen to the needs of our communities, we broaden our impact and can share the power of music with all.”

APPLE Campus' Culver Crossings

The new Apple campus, dubbed Culver Crossings, would include two four- and five-story buildings stretching across 4.5 acres between National, Washington and Venice boulevards.

The new development would double Apple’s footprint in Culver City, where its streaming service is based. It would also replace an entire block of office and industrial buildings Apple bought in late 2020 for $162 million. Completion is set for late 2024. Apple is estimated to employ 1,500 people previously announced it aims to grow the Culver City office to more than 3,000 employees by 2026.

Remembering MO OSTIN
March 27, 1927 – July 31, 2022
A pivotal figure in the evolution of Warner Music Group, in the 1960s was Mo Ostin. He ushered Warner/Reprise Records into a golden era of revolutionary, culture-shifting artistry. Last month, Warner Music announced that their longtime executive and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer passed in a joint statement by Tom Corson, Co-Chairman & COO, Warner Records & Aaron Bay-Schuck, Co-Chairman & CEO, Warner Records.
“Legendary music executive Mo Ostin passed away peacefully in his sleep last night at the age of 95. Mo was one of the greatest record men of all time, and a prime architect of the modern music business."
Ostin studied economics and law at the University of California – Los Angeles and he got his start in the label industry as a controller at Norman Granz’ jazz label Clef Records.Clef, which would later become Verve Records, included a concert promotion business that provided bookings for the label’s touring artists. The business model impressed the legendary crooner Frank Sinatra, who attempted unsuccessfully to buy Verve, which was ultimately sold to MGM Records, and he launched his own version of the idea in Reprise Records, recruiting Mo Ostin to run the label in 1960. While at Reprise, Ostin would sign numerous future musical heavyweights, including The Kinks, who were the label’s first rock act, and in 1967, guitarist Jimmy Hendrix.
Warner acquired Reprise in 1963 and Ostin would spend the next three decades under the Warner banner, playing a key role in the acquisition of Elektra and the launch of Warner-Elektra-Atlantic, which eventually became the basis for Warner Music Group. Ostin also helped to introduce American fans to the English rock band Fleetwood Mac, signing the band to Reprise in 1969 in time to release Then Play On, followed by Future Games, which became their first gold record in 1971. Following his departure from Warner in 1994, Ostin teamed up with former rival David Geffen to launch the music division of the entertainment conglomerate Dreamworks SKG.
Ostin was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 by Neil Young, Paul Simon, and Lorne Michael and in 2006, he was presented with The Recording Academy President’s Merit Award during the Grammy Salute to Industry Icons.
Ostin ushered Warner/Reprise Records into a golden era of revolutionary, culture-shifting artistry. Over his next three decades at the label, he remained a tireless champion of creative freedom, both for the talent he nurtured and the people who worked for him. In March 2015, Ostin donated $10 million to UCLA for th Mo Ostin Basketball Center, a state-of-the-art training facility, which was opened in October 2017 and named in his honor.

A Musical, Three-Chord Bourbon and More From the Dynamic Duo, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo
Pat & Neil Giraldo have a lot to celebrate. This November, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo will finally be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. You could say they have achieved success after selling 36 million albums, winning four consecutive Grammys, and recording 15 Top 40 hits, from Heartbreaker, to Treat Me Right, to Love Is A Battlefield. As for their lives' personal success, the couple have been married for 45 years, have two grown daughters and two grandchildren who live near their home outside Los Angeles. Olivia Newton John's Walk For Wellness
A Legacy of Love & Light from 4X Grammy Award Winner Singer, Actor & Activist
Although she had little acting experience (and turned 29 during filming), Olivia Newton-John gave an indelible performance as Sandy, a sweet-natured Australian transfer student who romances John Travolta’s alpha greaser Danny at a Southern California high school in the 1950s film Grease. Born in Cambridge, England in 1948, Newton-John moved with her family to Melbourne, Australia when she was five. After singing in talent shows, she recorded “I Honestly Love You,” “Have You Never Been Mellow” in the late 70s. In 1981 she took her new, sexier persona a step further with “Physical.” But Newton-John also faced her share of troubles and tragedy. Her breast cancer diagnoses forced her to postpone and cancel several tours. She was an advocate for the use of mediacal cannabis. In January 2021, she and daughter Chloe Lattanzi collaborated on a ballad titles Window in the Wall – a song about compassion and love.
Newton-John's advocacy for health issues was presaged by her prior involvement with many humanitarian causes. She died in her home in the Santa Ynez Valley of California, at the age of 73 in August.

Founding Champion, Dame Olivia Newton-John, loved people coming together to support those with cancer. That’s why the Walk for Wellness was always very special to her. We all know someone who has had concer or going through it. This year, you can support Olivia’s legacy by joining the Walk for Wellness in Melbourne on Sunday 9 October at the Alexandra Gardens, or virtually from anywhere in the world, and bring love & light to those going through it.
The Phenom Serena And The Game of Life!
To fans at the U.S. Open, “Serena” was her last name and her first name was “C’mon!” Serena Williams entered the U.S. Open at the age of 40 and with as many eyes on her as ever before, she played for the last time. She had announced her retirement before. The 23-time Grand Slam singles-winner said she was “evolving away from tennis” to grow her businesses and her family. “I have never liked the word retirement,” she wrote. “It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me.’” Aussie's Margaret Court remains the 24-time Grand Slam singles champion in history.
The Williams sisters, Venus & Serena were outsiders, in obvious ways — Black girls from the public courts of Compton, crashing a cotillion of a sport and against all the odds stacked up against them, they kept winning.
Serena also helped usher in a new era of athlete — the icon, the mogul, the brand! Above all the sisters are entertainers playing in Arthur Ashe Stadium for a crowd of just under 30,000. Her matches are more like great theater, a passion play lasting over 3 hours, longer than any major concert, and viewed by millions around the world. During her last game, in the audience you could spot her daughter, Olympia, three days shy of her fifth birthday. She wore a miniature version of the black dress that her mother wore on the court.
Hold that image. Serena is also a mom! At the end Serena shook Ajla Tomljanovic's (World No. 46) hand who had won this game 5-7, 7-6 (4),1-6. Or was it Serena who had won the bigger game of life!
