nonzero\architecture founder and multiple TEC Award-winner Peter Grueneisen celebrated his company’s 30th anniversary in 2020 with release of an elaborate coffee table book titled Where Dreams Are Born available at Amazon. The book includes conversations with well known clients including Hans Zimmer, David Lynch,

Bruce Botnick, to name a few. "Our designs address the human desire for both the beauty and functionality of their surroundings, whether at home or at work, at leisure or in the public realm,” says the Swiss-born Grueneisen.

The Mix Lab was nominated for Creative Achievement in Studio Design in the 36th NAAM TEC Awards.

"The facility takes advantage of a classic bow-truss warehouse space, which was then meticulously designed and built out to combine its industrial vibe with a more refined European style," says Grueneisen who sat down with studioexpresso in September for this interview.

SE: Do you design differently for Atmos rooms? What are some considerations vis-a-vis room specs? Do you like to collaborate with speaker providers sooner than later or is it not as important?

PG: There are definitely some considerations for an Atmos room that go beyond a traditional room design. The ceiling and wall surround speakers do take more space and the room height as well as the footprint does get affected by their placement. Besides the simple physical aspect of providing enough height and circulation space in a room, we need to pay attention to the ADA codes, as well as working with Dolby and the speaker vendors to find the best placement for each speaker, including the ideal number of components and their relationship to the room and to the mix position. 

It is always a good idea to get all of the parties, speaker providers, users, Dolby, system integrators, involved as early as possible in the process.

Acoustic treatments in the rooms also need to take into account that speakers now aim into every direction and that it is not a simple front to back setup anymore, like it would be in a stereo room, or even an earlier surround sound setup.

SE: Aesthetics like The Mix Lab's deep, 'blue' lighting ... How much of this identity comes up in your initial conversations with clients?

PG: Actually, an interesting fact is that the colors in the Mix Lab can be adjusted to any desirable color in the spectrum. But the blue you see in the pictures reflects Ben’s and the facility's identity, so it is pretty much set to that color and stays there. The visual design, including gate lighting, is an important aspect of any space we work on, so it is always an important part of the conversation. Being architects, we place a lot of importance on the spatial quality and the finishes and detailing of any room and of any building. It is an integral part of the design and complements the sound. Every project incorporates some aspect of the client’s identity and wishes and of our own sensibility. The collaboration between the different players is what usually leads to the end result and should reflect everybody’s input and preferences.

SE: Composers are like sonic architects; they organize teams around their singular vision. Would you say having that in common with composers makes it easier or harder to work with them?

PG: We have been working with many film composers over the last few years and we have found it to be an incredibly fertile ground for collaboration. Much of that owing to exactly what you pointed out, there are many similarities between what we do. I think overall it makes it easier for us to work with composers, since they are so used to navigating the whole range of a project from the artistic to the practical, from the team and project management to the financial aspects. There are many parallels between architecture and film, especially when focused on the sound.

SE: Peter you celebrated 30 years in architecture in 2020, what are some trends in studio design that are different from when you started?

PG: There are lot of developments, the evolution has been very interesting. While the basic physics and most of the materials are the same, there has been the general move away from ‘pure' music rooms to a much more multi-media oriented approach, as well as the transition from analog to digital in every respect. The music and movie industries have changed too, books can be written about all of the things that have changed. For us, the interesting thing is that it does evolve and figuring out how to respond to the latest developments is one of the most interesting parts of the work.

SE: Over the years you have worked with some legendary photographers - Julius Shulman, Edward Colver.... What's your criteria for choosing a photographer for a specific project? Do you specify or recommend a photographer? Who did the photos for The Mix Lab?

PG: We do like to get involved in the selection of the photographers for our projects, whenever possible. Some of the smaller rooms we have actually photographed ourselves, but it is a very difficult thing to do and whenever we have the budget, we like to work with professionals. The results are much better! Architectural photography is very different from snapping casual pictures, or any other type of photography, and we prefer to work with someone who specializes in that field. For a long time we have worked with Juergen Nogai, who was Julius Shulman’s working partner during his last years of work. After Juergen moved back to Europe, we have been working a lot with Taiyo Watanabe, who is an architect himself. That really helps the sensibility and there are a lot of inherent aspects we don’t have to discuss, since we are already thinking along the same lines. Taiyo did do the pictures for the Mix Lab.

Paul Cardall is a popular pianist known for his original compositions and arrangements of various hymns. His music is frequently categorized as Classical, Christian and New Age. Cardall has had several recordings debut at #1 on top Billboard charts. In addition to his recording career, Cardall founded Stone Angel Music in 1999, which produced a catalogue of recordings by other similar artists. Cardall recently recorded new work with Five/Four Productions(r) at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio (Photo by Robert Friedrich). Recording engineer Robert Friedrich helmed the project with Sanken CO-100K and CUX-100K microphones capable of the extremely high-resolution recording of Cardall, whose work has more than three billion streams and growing.

"In many ways, this is a tribute and continuation of the tradition of the 5/4 style of engineering that Michael Bishop and I developed with the new capability of Sanken mics," Friedrich explained. "Michael had recorded 100K sessions at Oberlin, which I mastered. This time I used two CO-100K mics as close mics, complementing a Royer SF12. I also used three Sanken's as the main LCR in a classical mic configuration. The L/R are the CUX-100's in the far-cardioid setting and a CO-100K in the center. Paul's performance was also captured with four 4K cameras and was discretely miked for Dolby Atmos."

Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, has an enrollment of 3,000 undergraduate students and is known for its education, business, neuroscience, and music programs. BW is home to the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music, which holds the title for the oldest collegiate Bach Festival in the nation. The college's radio station WBWC is known throughout the Cleveland area.

Steakhouse Studio in North Hollywood opened in 1986 and specializes in music production, offering 24-track analog recording and HD digital capabilities. The 1974 EMI/NEVE Custom QUAD console was originally built for EMI Records is and is the largest one still in operation. It has 56 Flying Fader-equipped input channels, 48 of which have 1064 Class A EQ. The console can route 92 inputs (80 with NEVE EQ) to the four-track bus with very sophisticated routing options.

Chief engineer Sam Madill explained, "We added the Telefunken drum pack to simplify and speed up our work with drummers, and to complement our comprehensive mic collection. Steakhouse is known for tracking drums and we have 30+ year history with some of the greatest drummers ever recorded."

While the space changed hands in the late ’90s and was rechristened as Avatar Studios, it recently reopened as the Power Station under the auspices of Berklee College of Music.

Now acclaimed drummer Pat Petrillo showcases the vast spectrum of contemporary groove music on the second album by his explosive Big Rhythm Band. The project features special guests Nile Rodgers, John Popper, Oz Noy and Glen Burtnik, The Power Station Sessions runs the gamut from New Orleans R&B, to blues, and funk.

The all-star collection of guest artists bring their own unique authenticity to the proceedings: Guitarists Nile Rodgers (Chic), Felicia Collins (Late Show with David Letterman) and Oz Noy (Chris Botti, Mike Stern); Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; saxophonist and Saturday Night Live bandleader Lenny Pickett; and famed singer-songwriter Glen Burtnik (Styx). Created by original owner Steve Walter (Berklee Alumnus) and co-owner Chris Noth (Sex and the City, Law & Order, The Good Wife), the new Cutting Room continues the tradition of extraordinary live performances with a fresh new take on how a rock club and lounge should feel like.

When Antioch Speedway volunteer Larry Adams learned that kids from Antioch High School might not graduate due to not having enough elective credits, he saw an opportunity to create a class for students to broadcast the racetrack’s events to earn those missing credits. Adams came to The Guitar Center Music Foundation (GCMF) asking for audio-visual gear to help build Antioch High School’s new broadcasting program, and GCMF donated all AV equipment needed for the students. Now, these students not only get the chance to graduate but also receive hands-on experience in a field that could offer college scholarships.

GCMF is a nonprofit organization focused on granting instruments to music education and music therapy organizations. “It is our mission to give everyone the power to express themselves through music, and to keep music education alive and attainable. As we continue to partner with groups across the country, it is clear that music education is key to providing a voice and safe space to musicians and non-musicians alike. We must foster talent and encourage people of all ages to share their experiences through sound,” says, executive director, Myka Miller. According to Miller, to-date this year, GCMF has awarded over $200K in grants, impacting more than 10,000 young musicians. "Through instrument grants and donations, our goal is to ensure schools and music education programs get the resources they need to keep music alive and accessible,” adds Miller.

The ELECTRIC MOON Foundation, an online 3D and VR music and art experience organization based in Los Angeles, CA, is another grantee. Similar to GCMF, they are passionate and dedicated to sharing the healing powers of music and art and ensuring these are accessible to everyone. GCMF answered the call when they reached out about a need for instruments for their summer music camp held at Alexandria House, a transitional home for women and children in Los Angeles. At camp, children learned to play an instrument and write songs and ended with a performance in front of friends and family. Through this request, GCMF was able to gift 25 guitars to this community group.

Jazz Hands for Autism was also provided with a GCMF grant, equipping their students with new guitars, basses, and recording equipment. This talent advocacy group has supported over 200 musicians on the Autism spectrum. Located in Los Angeles, CA, Jazz Hands for Autism’s students are excelling in their music lessons. Many students are also finding success as performers, writers, and recording artists. 

Casa Youth Shelter (above right) based out of Los Alamitos, CA, offers temporary emergency shelter for homeless, runaway, and abandoned youth ages 12-17. It serves and nurtures youth in crisis with shelter, counseling and support services, empowering them to come through their crisis with increased confidence, stability and tools for continued growth. The organization provides residents with music classes, for which GCMF donated several guitars and ukuleles.

Marbridge Foundation, based in Manchaca, TX, is a 200+ acre residential community that houses more than 273 adults with a wide range of cognitive disabilities. Their training and education program has a variety of classes, including drum therapy, band, painting, and more. GCMF provided an assortment of percussion instruments for these courses.

The new Apple campus, dubbed Culver Crossings, would include two four- and five-story buildings stretching across 4.5 acres between National, Washington and Venice boulevards.

The new development would double Apple’s footprint in Culver City, where its streaming service is based. It would also replace an entire block of office and industrial buildings Apple bought in late 2020 for $162 million. Completion is set for late 2024. Apple is estimated to employ 1,500 people previously announced it aims to grow the Culver City office to more than 3,000 employees by 2026.

With streaming music experiencing a boom, series of deals have been sealed in recent months and years for the catalogs of major artists like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, James Brown and many others.

Multimedia Music has acquired film and TV scores from nine-time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard .

Pricing for the catalog deal was not specified by the parties, but the transaction follows a $100 million funding round by Multimedia. The company, with offices in LA and London, is led by industry veterans Phil Hope and James Gibb in partnership with Atlantic Screen Music. Howard was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music earlier this year. Based in London and Los Angeles, Multimedia Music is managed by a highly experienced team with both industry leading expertise and a track record of success in the film and TV music space. Howard’s longtime agent, Sam Schwartz of the Gorfaine Schwartz Agency, added, “I am so pleased we found a solid and classy home in MMM for James’ legendary body of work."

“Legendary music executive Mo Ostin passed away peacefully in his sleep last night at the age of 95. Mo was one of the greatest record men of all time, and a prime architect of the modern music business."

Ostin studied economics and law at the University of California – Los Angeles and he got his start in the label industry as a controller at Norman Granz’ jazz label Clef Records.Clef, which would later become Verve Records, included a concert promotion business that provided bookings for the label’s touring artists. The business model impressed the legendary crooner Frank Sinatra, who attempted unsuccessfully to buy Verve, which was ultimately sold to MGM Records, and he launched his own version of the idea in Reprise Records, recruiting Mo Ostin to run the label in 1960. While at Reprise, Ostin would sign numerous future musical heavyweights, including The Kinks, who were the label’s first rock act, and in 1967, guitarist Jimmy Hendrix.

Warner acquired Reprise in 1963 and Ostin would spend the next three decades under the Warner banner, playing a key role in the acquisition of Elektra and the launch of Warner-Elektra-Atlantic, which eventually became the basis for Warner Music Group. Ostin also helped to introduce American fans to the English rock band Fleetwood Mac, signing the band to Reprise in 1969 in time to release Then Play On, followed by Future Games, which became their first gold record in 1971. Following his departure from Warner in 1994, Ostin teamed up with former rival David Geffen to launch the music division of the entertainment conglomerate Dreamworks SKG.

Ostin was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 by Neil Young, Paul Simon, and Lorne Michael and in 2006, he was presented with The Recording Academy President’s Merit Award during the Grammy Salute to Industry Icons.

Ostin ushered Warner/Reprise Records into a golden era of revolutionary, culture-shifting artistry. Over his next three decades at the label, he remained a tireless champion of creative freedom, both for the talent he nurtured and the people who worked for him. In March 2015, Ostin donated $10 million to UCLA for th Mo Ostin Basketball Center, a state-of-the-art training facility, which was opened in October 2017 and named in his honor.

Pat & Neil Giraldo have a lot to celebrate. This November, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo will finally be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. You could say they have achieved success after selling 36 million albums, winning four consecutive Grammys, and recording 15 Top 40 hits, from Heartbreaker, to Treat Me Right, to Love Is A Battlefield. As for their lives' personal success, the couple have been married for 45 years, have two grown daughters and two grandchildren who live near their home outside Los Angeles. Also Giraldo founded Three-Chord-Bourbon, a company that promises "perfectly tuned taste" and earmarks some of its sales to help struggling musicians. Neil is also a musician, producer, film composer and now the dynamic duo are working on a musical called Invinsible. According to Pat, the whole point of the story is that the differences between us make us stronger, not weaker. "That's the point of the story, and that true love exists," she adds. Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) announced that Sujata Murthy has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Media & Artist Relations. In her role, Ms. Murthy will continue to be responsible for the label’s media department and oversee press strategy and campaigns, as well as work closely with artists, managers and estates across UMG’s roster. Additionally, she will be an integral part in expanding UMe’s corporate and executive initiatives. Ms. Murthy will remain based in UMe’s Santa Monica offices and report to Bruce Resnikoff, President & CEO, UMe.

In making the announcement, Mr. Resnikoff said, “Sujata is an invaluable member of my executive team and she is someone who has earned the respect of our artists and their management teams. She has also built one of the best media teams in the industry and she continues to play an important role in developing and executing UMe’s successful release strategies for our artists.”

Ms. Murthy said, “I am truly honored to work with the incredible artists and catalog that are the very fabric of our musical heritage. Ms. Murthy began her music career at Capitol Records working with artists ranging from Radiohead to Skinny Puppy. She introduced classic artists to high school and college audiences; launched a D2C platform and was one of the first to use a new technology for virtual press conferences.

She has received numerous accolades including Korn Ferry’s “Most Influential South Asian Women Executives in Media and Entertainment,” included in “The 20 Most Powerful Indians in Hollywood” by the Business Insider, received the prestigious Visionary Award by The Women’s International Music Network, and more. She is a board member or advisor to several non-profit organizations focusing on helping underserved and marginalized communities. She is one of the few South Asian women senior executives in the music industry and serves in various capacities as a mentor and leader for the BIPOC community. She is a native of Chennai, India.

Although she had little acting experience (and turned 29 during filming), Olivia Newton-John gave an indelible performance as Sandy, a sweet-natured Australian transfer student who romances John Travolta’s alpha greaser Danny at a Southern California high school in the 1950s film Grease. Born in Cambridge, England in 1948, Newton-John moved with her family to Melbourne, Australia when she was five. After singing in talent shows, she recorded “I Honestly Love You,” “Have You Never Been Mellow” in the late 70s. In 1981 she took her new, sexier persona a step further with “Physical.” But Newton-John also faced her share of troubles and tragedy. Her breast cancer diagnoses forced her to postpone and cancel several tours. She was an advocate for the use of mediacal cannabis. In January 2021, she and daughter Chloe Lattanzi collaborated on a ballad titles Window in the Wall – a song about compassion and love.

Newton-John's advocacy for health issues was presaged by her prior involvement with many humanitarian causes. She died in her home in the Santa Ynez Valley of California, at the age of 73 in August.

To fans at the U.S. Open, “Serena” was her last name and her first name was “C’mon!” Serena Williams entered the U.S. Open at the age of 40 and with as many eyes on her as ever before, she played for the last time. She had announced her retirement before. The 23-time Grand Slam singles-winner said she was “evolving away from tennis” to grow her businesses and her family. “I have never liked the word retirement,” she wrote. “It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me.’” Aussie's Margaret Court remains the 24-time Grand Slam singles champion in history.

The Williams sisters, Venus & Serena were outsiders, in obvious ways — Black girls from the public courts of Compton, crashing a cotillion of a sport and against all the odds stacked up against them, they kept winning.

Serena also helped usher in a new era of athlete — the icon, the mogul, the brand! Above all the sisters are entertainers playing in Arthur Ashe Stadium for a crowd of just under 30,000. Her matches are more like great theater, a passion play lasting over 3 hours, longer than any major concert, and viewed by millions around the world. During her last game, in the audience you could spot her daughter, Olympia, three days shy of her fifth birthday. She wore a miniature version of the black dress that her mother wore on the court.

Hold that image. Serena is also a mom! At the end Serena shook Ajla Tomljanovic's (World No. 46) hand who had won this game 5-7, 7-6 (4),1-6. Or was it Serena who had won the bigger game of life!
