THE MID-WEEK BUZZ

Happy Midweek Dear Church!

I pray that your week is going well and that you are staying cool and hydrated. For those who were at church on Sunday, I can tell you that our air conditioning is working again … Thank God. I found myself singing to the tune of the Doxology… “Praise God for air conditioning”. I didn’t realize how much the extra heat had taken on my body and spirit. I’m getting back to my old self.

Sunday was a blessed day in our church. What a joy it was to welcome our new Minister of Music, Andy Riggs to our ministry staff. Andy’s skill is amazing only surpassed by his heart. I so look forward to seeing God work through him as he brings us into the glorious presence of God. Put September 28th on your calendar as we officially covenant with Andy in his calling to our congregation.

This coming Sunday, we will hear from Assistant Pastor Debbie Hallmark as she tackles the 2nd Chapter of James. Our discussion about this important passage has been amazing this week. I look forward to hearing her take on faith and works. You will not want to miss worship this Sunday. We will be celebrating Holy Communion as well!

I also want to encourage you to make September 11th a priority for you and your family. In addition to remembering 9/11, we will honor our very own, Poway First Responders. What a gift to live in a community where our safety and security are top priorities. We will have guests from the Fire Department and the Sherriff’s Department. Let’s show our servants how much we appreciate them. This would be a great day to invite your friends to worship with us!

Until Sunday, remember that the Source of all love holds you tightly, engulfing you in the presence of the Holy. I love being your pastor.

Holding you close and lifting you high!

Pastor Greg

A Message from Pastor Debbie

Blessings to all,

This Sunday I am so excited as I get to speak about the Epistle of James, part of the Wisdom Literature. The scripture is James 2:14-26. It can be found by going to James 2:14-26 NRSVUE - Faith without Works Is Dead - What good - Bible Gateway. There is much to think about in this scripture, but before Sunday, I want you to focus on what the word “works” means to you. Then, what can it mean for other people in different circumstances?

Also, I want to mention that we are updating our photo boards! You’ll see a sign that they are “Under Construction”. We need your help! First, we need someone to take the lead in getting photos. Second, if you have an individual or family photo that you think would be great, submit a picture (on actual photo paper) and give it to us. There will be a collection box in the Narthex.

You will also see pictures of people in Church leadership, staff, and those we are praying for.

Let me know how you can help!

Blessings,

Pastor Debbie

UPCOMING EVENTS & WEEKLY NEWS

WELCOME ANDY RIGGS

Andy Riggs was raised in Franklin, IN, and he is the oldest of 10 children. His mother loves to tell the story of how she knew Andy was going to be a musician before he was even born. Whenever music would be played, Andy would kick his mother in the ribs and follow the melodies of the songs up and down her ribs.

Andy began playing piano and singing in churches at the age of 15. He then went on to get a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an Emphasis in Performance from Anderson University in Anderson, IN. He is currently working on a Master of Music in Choral Conducting at California State University-Los Angeles.

Andy has performed as a singer on stages in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Russia, Ireland, and around the United States. He had the opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Greg Gilpin. He also performed with the Indianapolis Opera Chorus, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus, and several other choirs in Indiana.

In 2016, Andy moved to San Diego and immediately joined the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus. He was also the Director of Music for Pioneer Ocean View United Church of Christ, an open and affirming church in San Diego. He also conducted the Voices of Our City Choir, which is a choir for those experiencing homeless in San Diego. They were recently seen on America’s Got Talent where they received Terry Crews’s Golden Buzzer and made it to the Semi-Finals.

Andy recently finished 2 successful shows as Interim Artistic Director for the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus. Prior to taking on the role as Interim AD, Andy was a singer, dancer, soloist, small group member, Section Leader, Outreach Director, and Artistic Manager for the organization. Andy has been involved in GALA (Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) Choruses for 15 years.

Andy and his husband, Travis, currently live in Mission Valley, and love to be outdoors and to travel. Travis works for the VA Hospital in La Jolla. He has worked in the VA system for over 20 years. Andy and Travis are both so excited for Andy to be the next Minister of Music for Community Church of Poway!

POINT REPRESENTATIVE/LIAISON NEEDED

Our church leadership is looking for an individual who would be interested in becoming our representative/ liaison to The Poway Interfaith Team. This wonderful organization was partly founded by our former pastor, The Rev. Glen Larsen. If you are interested, let Pastor Greg or Pat Peterson know.

CONFIRM NOT CONFORM

September 8, 2022

One of the best things about our church is the diversity of experience and belief. We gather on Sundays, celebrating all God is doing, sometimes we get so caught up in our “Sunday experience,” that we forget that the call to discipleship is on our lives every day of the week.

Confirm-Not-Conform (CnC) is a program we will be using to ignite our passion for daily construction of who we are and what we hold dear. Folks have asked, “What exactly is CnC?” For lack of a better explanation, it is a confirmation

program for the entire church. CnC is designed for us each, to individually construct what it is we do believe, realizing that our beliefs can grow and change as we put our faith into practice. You will be hearing more and more about this amazing opportunity in the weeks leading up to September 8th

Sign-up in the fellowship hall!
