Early Autumn 2021: Kaming

“Kaming” - I just coined the term. It is hiking up the steep side of a round conical hillside called a kame.

A kame, another landform left over from the glacier, is a round conical-shaped hill. When we were ebiking the bike trail we noticed just such a landform situated between our campground and the little town of Dundee. It turns out that this kame has a name, Dundee Mountain, and there is a trail to the summit from our campground.

The trail is a one-mile loop up the side of the kame and then back down. We tackled it first thing this morning. With all the hiking we’ve done this past month or so going up and down steep hills, you’d think we’d be climbing with ease. Well, you’d be wrong. It is still a struggle, but the views continue to be worth it.

This plaque explains how a kame is formed.

Views from the top of Dundee Mountain, the kame that we just conquered.

We found a great wooded trail on top of the kame.

Today was “packing up” day. Actually, I was torn between staying longer or heading home. Home won out only because tomorrow is supposed to be 84º and we thought it would be the last 80º motorbiking day of the year. Motorbiking it will be! That also means another slice of pies-2-die-4 from the Crystal Cafe in Iola, Wisconsin.

With pie on the brain, we hooked up and headed home. On our way, we stopped off at Horicon Marsh to see if we could spot some migrating cranes or giant white swans.

No such luck. One lady told us that she saw some good bird-action yesterday, but not today. A two mile hike only netted us two ducks - one duck per mile.

The fall colors are just starting to peak at home. Once home, we headed over to Schmeekle Reserve, part of the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. The reserve has 5 miles of wonderful trails just on the outskirts of town. This is a favorite trail of ours when we have to run into town for errands.

(NOTE: We did go motorbiking the next day and we did stop off at Crystal Cafe for pie. I got bourbon pecan and Wanda got blueberry cherry along with a huge slab of ice cream. WOW!!!)

Glossary of terms used for newcomers: 1) V-Jer. The name of our camper. 2) Saturn. The name of our Van. 3) Duende. Our mischievous gremlin that breaks things. 4) Tata. The good gremlin that helps us fix Duende’s dirty work. 5) The Black Hole. This is what we call Walmart because every time we go in for just a couple of items, we come out spending way more than we figured. 6) QT. Quaint Town. 7) Little Buddy. This is what we call our Dyson cordless stick vacuum.
