Update on Oxitec’s Proposed California Project
Oxitec has been working to determine which potential locations in California would be best for a pilot project. This included evaluating the numbers of Aedes aegypti in various communities and the interest/resource capacity of local mosquito control districts in forming a partnership. After a thorough analysis, Oxitec determined that it would partner with Delta Mosquito and Vector Control District, which serves northern Tulare County. The company is still waiting for the EPA to issue a decision, after which they will seek approval from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. Here is the press release Oxitec issued about the continuation of its Florida project and initiation of a California pilot project, pending federal and state regulatory approval.
Register: PacVec Annual Meeting 2022 on
April 5-6 in Sacramento!
You are invited to join us for the 5th Annual Meeting of the Pacific Southwest Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases (PacVec) to be held April 5-6, 2022. At this time, we are planning an in-person event at the Embassy Suites Sacramento Riverfront Promenade in Sacramento, California. We are watching the COVID trends and will make a final decision on the meeting format in the next two weeks. To guide our planning, please register for the meeting using this form: https://ucdavis.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3KJIfCV0MUeGWHQ. We will use the contact information in your registration to communicate with you about the meeting details as the event approaches.

If you are a laboratory PI or agency supervisor who represents a group of people who might want to attend the PacVec meeting, please make sure that your collective responses represent all trainees, agency staff, or other individuals who would like to attend the meeting. In the past, we have been able to accommodate 2-3 in-person attendees per vector control agency. If it becomes necessary to limit numbers per group or agency due to space limitations, a remote attendance option will be available for anyone who cannot attend in person. To give us the most accurate counts, please answer the questions about in-person attendance based on the assumption that the meeting will be held in-person and that numbers will not be limited.

MVCAC Member Resources Re: COVID-19
MVCAC will be assembling and posting some information and templates of what some Districts have created and shared as they manage their operations. In 2021, San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District unveiled a new interactive educational experience titled, “Journey of the Germ.” The project was funded through the Entomological Society of America’s Chrysalis Grant, “to bring students closer to the backyard intersection of entomology and virology.”

As the interactive experience begins, a narrative serves as both foundation and guide through the storylines to instill a message that motivates the students who participate in the storylines to learn and develop solutions. The narration takes the students through the pathway West Nile virus follows as it cycles through the suburban Southern California landscape.
