Garces Memorial 75th Anniversary
Message from Mrs. Myka Chambers, Principal
Dear Garces Families,
It is with a full-filled heart that I write my final message for the Garces Memorial High School newsletter. This has been a journey that I will never forget. For more than a decade, Garces has been my home and I have surrounded myself with a faculty and staff I call my family. We have made wonderful memories that I will forever cherish. I have met amazing people and been able to work with some of the most talented individuals in their disciplines. Garces is a special school. I have always said it has the best students, and I will forever stand by that comment. I have watched many students over the years accomplish dreams and goals attainable only through the partnership we share with our families. This partnership is what sets Garces apart from all other schools in Kern County. The rich history and tradition of Garces is unmatched, and I am fortunate to have been a part of this school for so many years. To my faculty and staff thank you for believing in my leadership, and to the parents thank you for trusting me with your children and allowing me to help them find their dreams. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for this school and I have no doubt the future of Garces looks bright! My hope is that the programs we have started will continue to flourish because they have enriched our students’ lives. I have met your new principal, Noel Leon, and I am excited about her vision and her student-centered focus. I believe you are in great hands with Mr. Hickey, Fr. David, as well as Ms. Leon. My husband and I are going to miss the Garces community, and we will always call Garces our home. As we start a new adventure in Fresno, please know Garces will always be in our hearts.
Myka Chambers
Principal

Latina Leaders Club
The Latina Leaders Club hosted the 1st annual Qquinciñeara Fashion Show on our campus during lunch on Friday, May 19 during lunch. A Quinceañera is a celebration of a young lady’s 15th birthday, marking her passage from girlhood to womanhood. It is both a religious and cultural event to emphasize the importance of family and society in a young lady’s life. There are many girls on our campus who have had this celebration and several of them wanted to share their beautiful dresses. During the fashion show, the Latina Leaders educated the student body about the meaning of a Quince.
The students pictured are Deliah Fernandez, Josephine Macias, Mariah Mora, Adelynn Rubio, Bella Arias, Ariel Gamino, and, Gabriella Hernandez. The additional club members who help to put on the fashion show were: Maddy Baeza, Aurora Velasquez, Jayla Ward, Catalina Guerrero, and Rebecca Gutierrez.

Thank You Mr. Dewar!
On Friday, May 19th, Mr. Dewar brought his Dewar's Volkswagen Van full of ice cream for the students to enjoy a delicious year-end treat during lunch. Students had a choice of four different flavors and they enjoyed every bite! The faculty and staff also were treated to ice cream. We have some of the best parents with the most generous hearts who are so giving of their time, talent, or treasure. Thank you Mr. Dewar for the delicious treat!

They sold homemade salsa, guacamole, pickles, popsicles, juices, and pesto. They had almonds, fresh produce, plants, and crocheted items for sale. They were in the quad from 3:00 - 6:00 PM and had teachers, administrators, students, family, and members of the Garces community stop by.

Fr. Jim LaCasse Scholarship Recipients
Congratulations to Marie Zaninovich, Stella Holland, Vernoique Curutchague, and Mia Arreola! They are the recipients of the Fr. Jim LaCasse Scholarship for the 2023-2024 school year. Fr. Jim was a long-time teacher and chaplain at Garces. When he left Garces, he established a merit-based scholarship to recognize students who have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA, are practicing Catholics, and demonstrate character and leadership. Teachers are asked to nominate students who meet the criteria and the students are invited to submit an essay on "The Importance of Catholic Education". Fr. Jim reviews the essays and selects the recipient. This year, he received a record number of applicants and selected four recipients. He said, "This is a very talented group of students and it made my job very difficult." That is high praise from a Jesuit priest!

The award was established in memory of Mrs. Cattani and is awarded each year through the Bakersfield Catholic Education Foundation. In addition to the teacher award, the Cattani family also established a tuition assistance scholarship fund to help deserving families provide a Garces education to their children.
