NCC President marks 25 years serving institution

Overseeing significant academic development, facility improvements, and institutional evolution, Nashua Community College President Lucille Jordan has spent the last 25 years turning what was a technical institution into a modern, comprehensive community college.

Friends, colleagues, and supporters gathered at NCC in August to recognize Jordan's milestone and present a check for $25,000 donated to establish a fund in her name to assist students with emergency needs.

“In 25 years of visionary leadership, President Jordan has not simply expanded the footprint of the building, but expanded the reach of the members of this community to achieve great things,” said Mark Rubinstein, Chancellor of the Community College System of New Hampshire

ApprenticeshipNH receives $5.8 million grant to expand registered apprenticeship opportunities

The Community College System of New Hampshire was awarded $5.8 million by U.S. Department of Labor through the Apprenticeship Building America (ABA) grant. This funding will extend ApprenticeshipNH, a CCSNH workforce initiative, by developing a hub infrastructure in four regions of the state to support and expand Registered Apprenticeship programs in new industries and occupations.

“We greatly appreciate the ongoing support from the U.S. Department of Labor and we firmly believe this is validation for critical work that is helping individuals grow and advance and organizations address key workforce needs at a time when skilled workers are in such demand,” said Mark Rubinstein, CCSNH chancellor. “ApprenticeshipNH is a successful program that assists employers with proven recruitment strategies while supporting apprentices with earn and learn opportunities. Extending this program throughout the state will enable us to continue to expand this model to further support the communities we serve.”

Through the ApprenticeshipNH initiative, employers within key sectors of the state’s economy can implement workforce development programs to create a pipeline of skilled workers through a Registered Apprenticeship program using the “Earn While You Learn” model that combines on-the-job training and classroom education to increase an apprentice’s skills. Registered Apprenticeships are a proven solution for businesses looking to hire and retain workers while serving as an opportunity for job seekers to earn immediate employment with steadily increasing wages as they develop new skills in high-demand fields

Great Bay Community College will welcome its next cohort of medical assistant students

Great Bay Community College will welcome its next cohort of medical assistant students beginning Sept. 26. Twelve weeks later, those students will be gainfully employed in medical office and hospital settings across the Seacoast.

“The demand for medical assistants far outstrips the supply,” said Bruce Vance, Program Manager for Healthcare Programs at Great Bay’s Business and Training Center, which administers the Medical Assistant Training Program.

Laurie Merrick, who helps recruit students for the popular program in her role as Business and Training Center assistant, said many students are offered jobs directly from their externships. “If someone signs up for the September class, they will be employed and have a new career by the end of the year,” Merrick said. “We are constantly getting requests for our medical assistant students.”

Medical assistants record and update medical histories and contact information, schedule appointments, draw blood, check vital signs, and collect lab samples. They also collect information to help the doctor prepare for the exam.

CCSNH's ApprenticeshipNH program fills needs in cybersecurity

The U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL), in partnership with the White House, U.S. Department of Commerce, and other federal agencies, recently announced a 120-Day Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Sprint, to develop and train a skilled and diverse cybersecurity workforce. This national campaign encourages employers to explore Registered Apprenticeship as a recruitment, training, and retention strategy.

As the only program in the state with a Cybersecurity Support Technician Registered Apprenticeship program, Manchester Community College is poised to support this initiative through a partnership with ApprenticeshipNH, which has a history of assisting New Hampshire employers with Registered Apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships, and programs with high school students as proven recruitment strategies.

ApprenticeshipNH, in cooperation with the USDOL's Office of Apprenticeship, helps employers fill workforce gaps by creating a pipeline of skilled workers. Known as the “Earn As You Learn” model, ApprenticeshipNH combines paid on-the-job training with classroom education. Participating employers have experienced increased productivity, boosted employee retention, improved company culture, and ensured knowledge transfer when filling retiring positions with qualified, skilled workers.
