Support Prune Alley
August 11 Prune Alley update:
Starting tonight (Thursday, August 11) the intersection at North Beach Road and School Road will be open! For the foreseeable future you will be able to access Eastsound from the north. This weekend walkways will be open from Ray's Pharmacy parking lot to Island Market & The Lower Tavern. A new walkway will be open from the parking lot due east of ACE Hardware to Sequel Consignment and Waterfront Gallery.

The ongoing road construction on Prune Alley has created hardships for all businesses in the area. Noted below are important access points to help you reach these businesses. Madrona Street to Rose Street will help with several businesses. Sidewalks on Prune Alley are accessible via Rose Street. Please call them to double-check hours.

Lower Tavern. Walkway access from Island Market parking lot.
MONTi. Park on/near Rose Street. Dedicated walking access to restaurant.
Eastsound Liquor. Park on/near Rose Street. Easy access.
Sequel. Park on/near Rose Street; sidewalk access to front of building.
Waterfront Gallery. Same as Sequel. Access via sidewalk from Rose Street.
Island Skillet. Walking access from North Beach via A Street.

FALL 2022 FERRY RESERVATIONS NOW AVAILABLE
Ferry riders can now reserve spaces on sailings between Sept. 25 and Dec. 31. Customers can view the sailing schedules for these dates online. Reservations can be booked online or by calling 206-464-6400. Please note that international service to and from Sidney, B.C. remains suspended.
EVENTS THIS WEEK
FLOWER ARRANGING EVENT @ OI WINERY
Join flower farmer and florist Emmy Gran of Fabled Flora at the Orcas Island Winery, from 2 - 4 pm on August 11 and September 15 for an afternoon of flower arranging with the season’s best locally-grown blooms. Orcas Island Winery wines will be available to purchase at the event. All materials will be provided! Tickets are $75 and can be purchased here.

WHITHER THE WIND BLOWS - THE ORCAS GRANGE
The Actors Theater of Orcas Island will present the world premier of Whither the Wind Blows, this weekend August 11 - 13, at the Orcas Grange. The play is written by Rick Gossett and directed by Tom Fiscus. The play will follow a special concert of Hebridean and Celtic music beginning at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Darvill’s Bookstore, online at orcasactors.org or at the door.
ORCAS ISLAND ARTIST STUDIO TOURS
This is your chance to visit the working studios of 31 premier Orcas Island Artists. See first hand how and where their special techniques are being mastered, meet the artists and purchase their most recent work. August 12, 13, 14 from 11 am to 5 pm. See website for location and artist information.

LIVE MUSIC @ THE ORCAS HOTEL
We invite you to join us at the hotel for a very special concert this Friday! Dingolay, a Caribbean dance band from Seattle, will be setting up on the upper lawn outside the restaurant at 5:30 pm. You can make a reservation to join us in the restaurant, or just stop by and make yourself at home on the lawn or hotel porch for an evening of dancing, live music, and good company.

JAZZ @ WILD ISLAND
It's going to be hot on all levels. We will have a lot of horns on stage, an excellent rhythm section, and surprising guests. This week's concerts will be jam sessions featuring members of the OICMF Big Band, which will feature Jens Lindeman and Jon Kimura Parker on the Village Green August 14. Enjoy standards of the American songbook. Friday 5 - 6:30 pm & Saturday 12:30 - 2 pm. All concerts are sponsored by Wild Island and FREE for all. (donations appreciated)

CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND!
"Orcas~trations: French Connection"
Friday, August 12, 6:30 pm (live), Saturday, August 13, 4:30 pm (live & livestream). Join pianists Jon Kimura “Jackie” Parker and Christopher Shih in conversation with Aloysia Friedmann for what promises to be a lively and informative Pre-Concert Talk. Aloysia will lead these two musicians through a wide-ranging discussion touching on everything from performances and collaborations to their favorite post-concert sushi chefs! LIBRARY FAIR ON SATURDAY
Check out the Summer Book Sale organized by the Friends of the Orcas Island Public Library. The Book Sale will be held on Saturday, August 13, from 10 am to 3 pm in the library’s parking lot, Eastsound. Orcas Kanikapila, local ukulele musicians and singers, will provide musical accompaniment to your book viewing pleasures starting at 11:30 am.

SPECIAL SJIMA EVENT @ ORCAS CENTER
"Personal Stories of Everyday Life" by James Longley at Orcas Center: Sunday, August 28 from 5 - 7 pm. This event is “Pay What You Can”. Masks are encouraged. What is it like to live in Afghanistan? James Longley, photographer and award-winning filmmaker, speaks to his years immersed in the daily life of old city Kabul. His exhibit at SJIMA combines vast panoramic images with portraits and film focusing on everyday life. This presentation is sponsored by the Orcas Island Community Foundation and presented by SJIMA. THE ARTS AND MUSEUMS
OI LIBRARY FEATURES TWO ARTISTS IN AUGUST
This month, the Orcas Island Library features work by two artists, Erin Earl Moonbrick and Zoe Osenbach. Earl’s triptych, “Background Radiation”, is an abstract work painted in acrylics. Zoe has been working in mixed media art, working with found/used/recycled objects to give them new life. Read more.

ORCAS CENTER YOUTH ACTING CLASSES
Youth Acting classes return to Orcas Center this fall! Acting classes provide children with more than just fun – although that’s certainly a big part of it! Acting teaches kids to adapt to changing situations, work within a group, gain self-confidence, and practice public speaking. Classes will run September 13-October 20 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. ISLAND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (IRHI) IS HERE TO HELP
If you are unable to provide health insurance to your employees, IRHI continues to offer strictly confidential, reproductive-health patient care to both women and men. We provide initial office visits to evaluate the most effective options for birth control, STI lab testing, pregnancy tests, as well as paying for birth control. We are funded by local donors under the umbrella of OICF to offer these services based on financial need at Salish Sea Medical and Island Primary Care. ISLAND HEARING HEALTHCARE @ ORCAS SENIOR CENTER
Stacie Nordrum, Au.D., CCC-A, of Island Hearing Healthcare will be offering hearing appointments at Orcas Senior Center on Thursday, August 25, September 29, and starting October 6, every first Thursday of the month. Services available include hearing tests, consultations, hearing aid programming, and other hearing aid services. Consultation, cleaning, and checks of hearing aids will be offered free of charge. FREE CHILDHOOD VACCINES - BACK TO SCHOOL CLINICS
San Juan County Health and Community Services (HCS) is providing free childhood vaccines for K-12 students at back-to-school clinics beginning the end of August and into September. No appointment needed. Immunizations will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Aug. 30 at the Orcas Island School Cafeteria
  • Sept. 7 at the Orcas HCS clinic (Orcas Senior Services Center – 62 Henry Rd).

If you are not sure which vaccines your child needs, HCS public health nurses will be able to discuss vaccine schedules with you and can help look up your child’s vaccine record. If you have other vaccine questions prior to the clinics, you may reach a public health nurse by calling 360-370-7511.

Position: Front Desk Associate (Guest Services & General Store)
Details: The Front Desk Associate is the primary person interacting with guests. They are responsible for preserving Doe Bay’s unique culture by providing excellent guest service as it pertains to reservations, communications, and store operations. The position addresses guest needs, provides information, maintains unit inventory, reservations, and room assignments, processes guest folios, manages cash, and supports General Store operations.
Pay is up to $19 per hour depending on experience. 30-40 hours per week. Health Benefits available after 2-3 months. Onsite housing is not available at this time.
