Clergy Reflection

I’ve been reflecting lately on the gift of seeing things with new eyes.

Take, for example, our main outdoor courtyard (St. Paul's courtyard) at Redeemer, off the circular driveway off Melrose Avenue.

Prior to the pandemic, this courtyard for me, and I think for many others as well, was simply a space to walk through, to get from Point A to Point B.

Today, it is both outdoor sanctuary and pastoral meeting ground; a sacred space of gathering, connecting, sharing, being together. The sky-dome enchants with clouds floating overhead, the eaves provide shelter from sun and rain. The circle of benches and chairs recall Eucharistic meals and confidences shared, staff and liturgy meetings, recovery groups. This space has come alive for me, and I will never see it as just a space to walk through, again.
Sharing our love for Redeemer

Tomorrow, Friday, July 30, at 1:00 p.m., join Junior Warden Steve Sutor as he shares a brief history of our church, with photos, from 1855 to the present, with the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Baltimore Chapter. The focus is on the Pietro Belluschi-designed buildings, which AIA has designated as one of the four buildings in Baltimore that help to express Baltimore’s unique architectural presence.

Please join us on Zoom, using the links below. If unable to join tomorrow, go to YouTube, key in AIA Baltimore, and search for Redeemer.

All African-American Authors Book Club

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are prepared to continue our exploration of the American Black experience through the eyes of African-American authors. The All African-American Authors Book Club will be back in swing on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 7 p.m. We will be discussing our next read, JUST MERCY, by Brian Stephenson. Brian Stephenson is the internationally known attorney and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, a non-profit organization based in Montgomery, AL, dedicated to legal representation for prisoners who may have been wrongly convicted of crimes. The following month’s discussion will be on the novel, KINDRED, by Octavia Butler. Ms. Butler is an extremely prolific writer of primarily dystopian science fiction.

Our discussions promise to be as stimulating as always. Come and join us!

Notes from BUILD Leaders Meeting

Last Thursday, 122 BUILD leaders met at Steuart Hill Academic Academy in Southwest Baltimore for our first in-person meeting in more than 18 months. On an unusually cool and beautiful July evening we heard of the new leadership changes in BUILD and celebrated the efforts of BUILD leaders who have delivered 5,566,092 (!!!) meals, and assisted over 5,000 Baltimoreans in getting Covid-19 vaccinations, as well as recognizing the work done at Johnston Square. Each Build Leader made an individual pledge committing themselves to specific activity areas for the future.

A planned action for Saturday, September 18 with Mayor Brandon Scott was announced and every member institution was asked to make an attendee pledge. Church of the Redeemer has made an ambitious pledge of 50 attendees. We invite each of you to "Save the Date" and to attend this action which will focus, in part, on hearing the Mayor's plans for the use of $640 million dollars of Federal funding and for BUILD to give its input. Firm date and location will be announced soon.

It's hard for me to describe the joy of seeing old friends that I have not seen in person for so long and to feel my spirits raised and my energy lifted. As the event team gathered to assess the evening, I saw a beautiful harvest moon and couldn't help but feel that it was smiling on our efforts. I hope each of you will have the same feelings after the September 18th action.
