HLSP News - Winter 2025

Brought to you by the Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP). This is a Newsletter for the Health Science Librarians, HLSP Liaisons, and Health Care Providers in South Central New York State.

Winter Happenings

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Winter 2024/2025 edition of HLSP News.

I hope you had an awesome Fall, and the Holiday season was peaceful for you. Over the past few months, I've worked to schedule field visits with the hospital librarians and liaisons for 6 of the hospital members and we have worked to increase usage of the HLSP services we provide to members including the electronic resources, our lunch and learn programs, and this newsletter. I will continue to schedule visits so if we haven't met yet this year, please know I will be in touch soon.

Please enjoy this Winter edition of HLSP News and let me know if you have any questions about anything included.

All the Best,

Christine Brown

Outreach Services Librarian/HLSP Coordinator

Field Visits

In the field visits that I've done this year, I've learned that a contributing factor in low usage of the NEJM and STAT!Ref resources is that the vendors don't have the correct IP address for many of our members and some members don't have quick links to access the resources. So, I've been working with our vendors and members to change that.

In the near future, I plan to provide some marketing material for our librarians and liaisons to share with providers and administrators so they are aware of the resources and can learn how to access them. The goal is for the NEJM and STAT!Ref resources to be used by more members so that total usage numbers increase this year.

Electronic Resources

In December, we renewed SCRLC's New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) subscription. And the great news is that our subscription now also includes NEJM Evidence which was added effective 1/1/2025. So, all member hospitals now have access to both online journals. If you have any questions about NEJM Evidence, please let me know.

We also renewed our subscription for the 5 Ovid journals that we purchase for members on a cost share basis. We have 4 members who participate in the Ovid journal cost share program. If you are not currently participating and would like more information, please let me know so we can look into adding you in future years.

Health, Wellness, and Hospital Libraries

Lunch and Learn Series

On December 13, Nellie Brown from Cornell's ILR School presented a webinar that shared information on shift work and how it impacts our health. Unfortunately, Nellie wasn't able to record it due to the terms of the grant that funded the program. If you are interested in the topic and weren't able to attend the webinar, let me know.

I'm currently working on a program that addresses AI in the workplace and will share details when it comes together. We're also planning programs on mosquito borne illnesses and on how mental health impacts libraries of all kinds.

Please check our website periodically for announcements on additional programs. And if there are any topics in the health, wellness and hospital libraries arena that you'd like to learn more about, please reach out to me to share them.

HLSP Grant Program

The applications for the 2024/2025 HLSP Grants have been sent to all the member hospital librarians and liaisons, and we have received most of them. I encourage all members to return the application if you haven't done so already.

As a reminder, the purpose of the HLSP grant program is to provide funds that allow each member hospital library to purchase resources that will improve patient care. The funds are not intended to supplement the resources of an individual.

If you have any questions about whether a specific item or service is allowable, you can check the guidelines or reach out to me for information and a discussion.
