Outliers and Outlaws

The Eugene Lesbian History Project and documentary film

October 2024

We are delighted to announce that on Saturday, November 16th at 12pm we will premiere Outliers and Outlaws at the Hollywood Theater in Portland as part of the QDOC Film Festival! Tickets and information are available at this link. Our filmmakers will be in attendance along with several of the Narrators for a Q&A following the screening.

QDOC is the only film festival in the world dedicated solely to exhibiting LGBTQIA+ documentary films. As a queer Oregon story, this festival has been a goal for our world premiere. We're so grateful to launch our film at QDOC.

More festivals are coming! Watch for an announcement about a special screening in Eugene this winter. We will keep you all updated here and on our social media channels. We also welcome screening opportunities that you wish to create. Reach out to our Producer of Marketing and Distribution G. Chesler at outliersandoutlawsfilm@gmail.com to talk about ideas.

Outliers and Outlaws thanks the artists and musicians supporting our film

As we conclude our post-production process, our team of contributing artists has expanded. Motion Designer Kaci Smith created maps, graphics, a dynamic opening title sequence, and this stunning poster (below) that enhance our story of Eugene lesbian world-builders. Jody Bleyle, known for their ground breaking bands Team Dresch and Hazel, lends their iconic voice to our film's narration.

And the soundtrack of our film just went to 11! We are thrilled to include songs by Cris Williamson, Meg Christian, and Dolly Parton. Their songs evoke the time, place, and memories of this historic period. Did you know that Dolly wrote this little known ode to Eugene after she was cared for by the Eugene community?

Symposium in Lille, France

In September, Producer Judith Raiskin, along with Director Courtney Hermann, and Editor Kerribeth Elliott, had the unique opportunity to screen a preview of our film at the Lesbian Lands: Community and Creativity Across Time and Space Symposium in Lille, France.

This event was an academic and creative symposium about Oregon lesbian lands and other lesbian lands around the world. Linda Long, co-founder of the Eugene Lesbian History Project, organized a gallery exhibit of photographs by Tee Corinne, Ruth Mountaingrove, and contemporary photographers whose work is inspired by lesbian lands. Judith and Linda gave a presentation about the Eugene Lesbian Oral History Project and the Outliers and Outlaws digital exhibit.

The theater was packed for the film's screening and the audience (mostly young French people) was very enthusiastic. Another film that was screened was the beautiful in-progress Dykeland by Elana Margo Santana and Kate Lindhardt. We hope to screen our films together again someday.
