Delayed Due to Weather:
This weekend's planned South Frontage Road Closure

For a total of three weekends, one block of South Frontage Road between York and College Streets is scheduled to be closed to motor vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. These closures are necessary for public safety as a crane will be in use for work on 100 College Street.

The first closure has occurred. The second closure was to occur this weekend but is being delayed due to weather conditions that would impede the safe operation of the crane. Therefore, the portion of South Frontage Road between York and College Streets will not close this weekend.

Weather permitting, the new schedule for closures is as follows:

  •  Friday, March 4 at 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. on Monday, March 7

  •  Friday, March 11 at 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. on Monday, March 14

When the closures do happen, a simple detour will direct motor vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists around the closed portion of South Frontage Road.

Construction News through March 4, 2022

Some of the work that will occur over the next week has the potential to be loud. This work will occur during the day between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. near the intersection of Congress Avenue and South Frontage Road.

No other significant changes to the existing traffic patterns are expected over the next week.

The Service Drives traffic shift that occurred on Tuesday, February 15 will remain in place until mid-2023. Please see "Reminder: Service Drives Traffic Shift" below this section to learn more.

Various single-lane closures will occur to accommodate construction of 101 College Street and Downtown Crossing Phase 2 and are listed in more detail below.

The temporary condition of no right-hand turns onto South Frontage Road from South Orange Street remains in place.

A simple detour will guide drivers from State Street and Union Avenue to access South Frontage Road:

  • If heading south on State Street and Union Avenue, take a right onto Columbus Avenue, right onto Church Street, and then right onto South Frontage Road.

  • If heading north on Union Avenue, take a left onto Columbus Avenue, right onto Church Street, and then right onto South Frontage Road..

This detour will not impact traffic already on South Frontage Road and heading to I91/I95.

The detour will only impact drivers who typically access South Frontage Road from South Orange Street, behind the New Haven police station and the Knights of Columbus printing press/supply building.

This detour will be in place until the new Orange Street intersection (across the former highway corridor) opens, which is anticipated to occur in approximately the next month and a half.

Please see graphics immediately below this text section for detour information.

LANE CLOSURES
Through Friday, March 4, 2022 various lane closures may occur on the following roads to accommodate construction:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard: single lane closures between Orange Street and College Street.
  • Orange Street between George Street and MLK Boulevard: closed heading south.

WORK HOURS
Through Friday, March 4, 2022, Downtown Crossing-related work will occur during daytime work hours.

Road signage will alert drivers to lane closures in the construction area.

Reminder: Service Drives Traffic Shift

On Tuesday, February 15th a significant change occurred on the Service Drives that provide access between Interstates 91 & 95 and the Air Rights & 100 College Street parking garages.

The North Service Drive is closed to safely accommodate construction of 101 College Street. Instead, the South Service Drive is open and providing access between Interstates 91 & 95 and the Air Rights & 100 College Street parking garages.

The South Service Drive is two-way, with one-lane for outbound traffic and one-lane for inbound traffic. This traffic pattern will remain in place until June 2023.

Signage will guide drivers through the new routes along the Service Drives and in the 100 College Street parking garage.

Please pay attention to road signage, slow down, and stay safe!

Please see immediately below for a graphic that depicts the Service Drive shifts.
