Today's Scripture Reflection

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up as fits the occasion, that it gives grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29

What goes into someone's mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. 
Philippians 4:8

Today’s political environment can be a chaotic scene of political hatred, division, strife, verbal attacks, arrogance, resentment, and lies. Ask yourself: am I contributing to that toxic environment instead of promoting unification? It’s so easy to say, “Those Republicans blah, blah, blah...” It’s so easy to say, “Those Democrats blah, blah, blah...” 

Are you saying cutting negative remarks? It’s so easy to make snide comments about a political leader. It’s so easy to comment on a Facebook post that is politically unkind – rather than to just let it go by.

Do you know someone who is continually making negative political remarks? How does it make you feel? I know someone who does this continually. I came to realize that I had to limit my time with that person, of if necessary, ignore the comments.

From my personal experience, I find that when I pay attention to the political slurs, it tends to make me more negative. When I ignore them, I am more positive(!) What we see and hear definitely affects our daily outlook on life.

How can we promote unification? How can we make a difference? First, stop yourself from making unkind political comments. Bite your tongue. Think of something positive. Second, don’t comment on unkind Facebook posts. Keep scrolling. Third, encourage others to take the high road too.

Can you imagine Jesus making belittling comments? Absolutely not. Be a role model for others to follow, just as Jesus was a role model for us. If each and every one of us did this, we could make a difference.
