Spotlight on Liberty Park

White Plains has 20 parks, totaling more than 100 acres throughout the city.

This month's focus is Liberty Park, located on Lake Street on the White Plains - Harrison border. The park was named to honor White Plains residents who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Liberty Park offers a peaceful environment tucked away from the busy downtown which lends itself to quiet, contemplative, relaxation and is the site of our permanent memorial to the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

This two acre waterfront park offers residents passive recreation, picnicking, hiking, kayaking and fishing in the 22 acre Silver Lake.

The Youth Bureau has introduced an innovative new program called Project Thrive, a youth entrepreneurship food truck program.

Thrive participants are learning all aspects of managing and running a food truck business, including designing the menu, preparing the food, and creating the marketing for the truck. The Food Truck offers a Dollar Menu of hot dogs, chicken fingers, French fries and fruit.

Three Long-Time Employees Retire After Distinguished Careers of Service to the City
Mayor Tom Roach and the White Plains Common Council have recently honored three key city employees in recognition of their dedication and outstanding service to the community. Together, the three have served the City for 120 years.
Deputy Commissioner James M. Bradley is a 47 year veteran of the White Plains Department of Public Safety. He served as Chief of Police for 25 years before his appointment as Deputy Commissioner in 2016. Members of the community joined the Department of Public Safety to honor the distinguished career of Deputy Commissioner Bradley with a farewell “walk out” ceremony from the Public Safety Building on June 25th.
On July 26th members of the community came together to honor the distinguished career of Fire Chief Richard Lyman with a farewell "walk out" ceremony from the Public Safety Building. Chief Lyman, a 45 year veteran of the Department of Public Safety, was the 8th career chief in White Plains’ history and served as Fire Chief for the past 18 years. Chief Lyman was a strong advocate of fire prevention through public education and fire and building code compliance.
City Clerk Anne McPherson officiated at her last White Plains Common Council meeting on July 6th. Anne served the City and the White Plains community as Clerk for 28 years. As Clerk, Anne was responsible for all vital records (births, deaths, marriage licenses), the issuance of special licenses (ex: dog licenses), the management of all city records, and voter assistance. She is also the City Historian. In addition, the Clerk is the Secretary to the Common Council, responsible for minutes and certifying legislation.

Side-loader Pickup Now Covers 75% of City
White Plains is, once again, expanding its automated side loader (ASL) waste pickup program to include additional neighborhoods.

Residents who live in the Gedney Farms, Gedney Meadows, Hillair Circle, and Holbrooke areas have already received their new “Toter Carts” to use with their household garbage, co-mingled recycling, and paper recycling. These neighborhoods are the latest additions to our ASL program, which will now cover about 75% of all residential customers throughout the City and which has become the predominant method by which the City picks up solid waste.

Have questions? Please contact the Department of Public Works at 914-422-1206.
