Summer Time
We hope you are able to squeeze in a little time doing some of the things you were not able to do during this long challenging year. We have been happy visiting with family and friends and exploring the natural world around us. When we're not working that is!
Patients continue to be our greatest teachers, giving us the opportunity to see the consistent capacity of lifestyle and natural medicine to help people feel empowered and feel better.
Below, read about the naturopathic approach to the treatment of acne. We all want to put our best self forward, including having good enough skin! Relatedly, remember to take care of your skin this summer, too. I am a fan of big hats (see above!) and umbrellas against the sun. But remember, a little sun is not only good for you, but essential. By exposing your skin to sunlight, you actually make Vitamin D from cholesterol. The sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays impact the cholesterol within your skin, giving the needed energy for Vitamin D synthesis to take place. How much is good? Like a lot of medicine, the answer is, it depends--on age, skin tone, other illnesses, diet, etc. But 10-15 minutes is within reason for most people. More if you use sunscreen. And remember to use products that are not loaded with chemicals. The Environmental Working Group has a helpful sunscreen guide.

If you're looking for encouragement to spend a little more time outdoors, check out this Institute for Natural Medicine's recent outdoor giveaway & ebook: Nature as Healer: Get Outside for Better Health. It's gorgeous, succinct and inspiring. I have a recipe in there: Energy Pin Balls. You will need to provide your email to enter the giveaway and download the ebook.
Here's wishing you a healthy and vibrant summer!

Naturopathic Therapies for Acne
|
|
|
by Dr. Amy Rothenberg
I sometimes think about the concept of beauty in our culture... we so often judge a person by how they look. I like to think I am not so shallow and that I care more about the quality of a person's internal attributes than about how they appear on the outside. That said, externally visible or "disfiguring" symptoms can cause a person terrific pain, both psychological and otherwise. Cystic acne is one such example. Thankfully, it is also one condition that, in my experience, homeopathy and natural medicine can really help.
Acne is a challenging and difficult to handle skin problem that affects nearly 10 % of the population worldwide. Research shows the hardest hit group is teenage boys, but anyone can develop acne at any age. Acne can have an impact physically and emotionally and on one’s quality of life. People with acne have described issues with self-image, self-esteem, ability to make friends, finding jobs, as well as anxiety and depression. Naturopathic therapies for acne can be beneficial not only for your skin, but also for your overall health.

RECIPE: No-Mayo Cole Slaw

Whether you find your veggies at the store, a farmer’s market or your garden, one thing in summer abundance is cabbage. Cabbage---green or red or Chinese---is often easy to find and affordable. But what to do with all that cabbage?
Here’s my favorite recipe, loaded with a few special ingredients alongside a no-mayo dressing that packs a healthy punch.
Red cabbage has a bit more vitamin A and iron than its green and Chinese counterparts, but all promote healthy digestion, lower inflammation, support immune function and supply nutrients your body needs. I like to use as a side dish, or atop a bed of greens or as a jumpstart-my-day breakfast with a piece of whole grain or gluten free toast.

We think a lot about and encourage our patients to reduce our overall exposure to toxins in the environment. Menstrual products have notoriously utilized a number of chemicals. Content of menstrual products do not need to be disclosed.
Pthalates, bisphenols, parabens are all hormone disruptors found in the big company tampons, pads, and liners. TOP is a company that makes products free of synthetics, toxins, pesticides, dyes, and fragrances. They emphasize sustainably grown organic cotton, and they also donate products to girls and women who do not have adequate access to period products.
Check out their website and support this wonderful, earth and people friendly business.
