CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Week of January 6, 2025

CLOSURE AT MT. VERNON AVENUE AND 2ND STREET

WHAT’S HAPPENING: Crews plan to work to align the water line at the Mt. Vernon Avenue and 2nd Street intersection to improve the overall system. While this activity is underway, motorists will be detoured to use the alleyway to W. 3rd Street to access Mt. Vernon Avenue. Please use caution and be aware of your surroundings when walking near work zones.

WHEN:

Weeks of January 6 and January 20: Crews will close a portion of 2nd Street west of Mt. Vernon Avenue, and there will be lane reductions and turn restrictions on both eastbound and westbound 2nd Street.

Weeks of January 13 and January 27: There will be lane reductions and turn restrictions on both northbound and southbound Mt. Vernon Avenue.

The road closure and lane reductions will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Construction activity is expected to take place weekdays, Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

WHAT TO EXPECT: To access the new water line, crews plan to sawcut into the street and excavate. Heavy construction equipment like excavators, compaction rollers, and loaders will be on site to complete the work. There will be flaggers on site to assist pedestrians through the work zone. Large construction vehicles and delivery trucks may be in the area during work hours and will primarily use 2nd Street from the freeway to reach the jobsite.

You may hear noise or feel vibration related to construction activity. All construction is dynamic, and the schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change. Visit the project Google map for the most up-to-date closures scheduled and available detour routes.

ABOUT THE MT. VERNON AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT

Since opening to the public in 1934, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge (MVAB) was an iconic structure, bridging San Bernardino communities to the north and south and serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students and businesses. The Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge is a complex bridge replacement project that spans over one of the largest rail yards in the region. An iconic structure in San Bernardino, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge connected communities on the west side of San Bernardino for nearly 90 years, serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students, and businesses.

To ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge, the City of San Bernardino (City) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) partnered with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to rebuild the bridge. Improvements at the south end of the bridge will include retaining walls along both sides with 3rd Street closed during construction but opened to traffic permanently after construction is complete. On the north side retaining walls will also be constructed along both sides of the transition between the bridge and W. Kingman Street. Where Mount Vernon Avenue reconnects to W. 2nd Street and W. Kingman Street new curbs and gutters will be installed. Reconstruction of the new bridge began in 2023 and the new structure is anticipated to open in 2025.
