We have had a great academic year so far and students have had much success in extracurricular activities as well.
I continue to be so thankful for the collaboration, partnerships and opportunities in our district. One recent example of an amazing partnership is Worth County Development Authority. Each year, they provide an annual contribution to the district. They also support funding for special projects and offer the scholarships for students.
The board just approved how our district will allocate their generous 2022-23 donation of $370,000. We are focusing on four main areas: safety for students, energy efficiency, instructional materials for students/staff, and reducing costs to parents in our community. In addition, WCDA recently provided a donation of $200,000 toward the HVAC project which will add air conditioning to high school classrooms and the media center.
Coming up, we have Spring Break and ISASP testing. Spring activities will be underway mid-March.
Together, let's finish the year strong!

2022 Winter Olympic Project
Mrs. Matzen’s 2nd grade
Every four years, the Winter Olympics take place, and this year’s group of 2nd graders were fortunate enough to experience the Olympics in their own 2nd grade style!
To begin the unit, the kids worked in partnerships as they researched one of the Winter Olympic sports. This was followed with a class presentation including video footage of their Olympic sport in action. Next, each partnership collaborated and drew their own sport specific Olympic medal.
Together with Mrs. Holt, the 2nd graders brought their medals to life as they designed and 3D printed their medals using the TinkerCAD program. The finishing touches were put on the newly 3D printed medals, as the gold medals came to life. During the entire span of the Winter Olympic competitions, the class colored gold, silver, and bronze medals that were used to complete a school Olympic medal count. The kids had a blast and will remember this research and STEM unit for years to come!

Middle School Science Engagement Activity
By Mrs. Rebecca Miller
7th-Grade and 8th-Grade Science
As we roll out our new OpenSciEd Middle School Science Curriculum we are running a few parallel units to get the standards met and units covered for students in grades 7 and 8.
Our current unit is Sound Waves and the anchoring phenomenon is, “how can a sound make something move?” We navigate through this question and many other driving questions as the unit progresses. One of the most impactful and meaningful ways to embed scientific knowledge is to teach it to another peer and the students have done just that.
As we near the end of our unit we have spent time crafting and creating nonfiction informational text geared towards PreK-5th grade reading levels and students. The information in these nonfiction books is uniform and presented at a level that is engaging and fun for the students to read or be read to. The middle school science students created characters and themes for their nonfiction books and found a way to present the educational material to the younger students that were especially engaging and prompted questions and interaction from the elementary and intermediate students.
It is important to give the middle school students opportunities to serve in leadership roles for our intermediate and elementary students.

First graders said, “It feels so good to be helpful” and “I like helping others!”
Mrs. Arians’ 1st grade collected gently used items to donate to Salvation Army. The students were excited to give items to those in need. They thought of the idea after reading their “Scholastic News” that discussed donations and how giving to others feels good.
“I am very proud of their giving hearts and attitudes,” said Mrs. Arians.

Do you want to build a snowman with the Manly preschool students?
Mrs. Arians' and Mrs. Costello's first graders from Central Springs/Manly, created Valentine's letters for the Manly Care Center/Nursing Home. In turn, the care center friends created cards for the first graders. The first graders enjoyed reading what was "invented" during their care center friends' lives including automobiles, refrigerators, phones, and iPads. The first graders were flabbergasted to learn more about the friends across the street. What a special event!
