Ecclesiastes 3 tells us “To every thing there is a season.” Yet here we are, in our sixth change of seasons since COVID became part of our lives in the spring of 2020. It has been a very long season indeed. We are still masking and distancing, and too many in the US and the rest of the world remain unvaccinated. It’s tempting to identify with Bill Murray’s character who, in the 1993 film “Groundhog Day”, wakes up every day to see that this day is exactly the same as the day before. But we are in fact blessed with much good news, and you will hear more about that at this Sunday’s Forum.
THIS SUNDAY
On Sunday, October 17, we will focus on health and healing as we celebrate the feast of St. Luke, the Gospel writer who was also thought to have been a physician. At all our services, we will pray for continued healing from the COVID-19 pandemic and recognize the heroic service of all who work in healthcare.

The Work of Healing in the COVID-19 Pandemic
As we recognize St. Luke’s Day and honor all healthcare providers, St. Bart’s members who work in the healthcare field offer their reflections on the past eighteen months and what comes next. Join us in-person in the Great Hall or online via our website, Facebook and YouTube.

The Right Reverend Dean E. Wolfe, Rector, will preach. Download our service leaflet to follow along with us as we live stream Sunday morning worship from the church on our website, Facebook and YouTube. Read our tips and tricks for worship online.

We continue to offer in-person worship at 8 am, 9 am, 11 am, and 5 pm, with congregational singing and St. Bartholomew's Choir participating at the 11 am service and St. Bart's Singers participating at 9 am. Masks are required at in-person services.

Sundays at 10 am
Our resident youth group meets both in-person in Room 44 and on Zoom. If you or a family member is a young person in middle or high school, contact Julie Ross for information about how to attend.

When you think about St. Bart’s, think of a place of abundance and welcome. A place of radical welcome to the next person in the door. A place of worship and exquisite music in all their glorious forms. Your pledge is an affirmation of these values and a testament to the abundance of God’s gifts in our worship, music, educational programs, and all that we do. We invite you to give generously to St. Bart’s. Give to God to transform your life, to transform the Church, to transform the world. Give to God everything you can.
Join the St. Tabitha's guild in person on the Great Terrace during Coffee Hour after a special blessing honoring their handiwork at the 11 am service that day. All are welcome! This group meets to knit and crochet at a distance approximately every other Sunday from 2 to 4 pm via Zoom working on a variety of projects for the Seamen’s Institute and Crossroads Community Services and has formed a new partnership with Jamaica Hospital to create baby garments for newborns and afghans for hospice patients. Learn more.

St. Bart's is delighted to participate in Open House New York this coming Sunday, October 17. The church will be open for self-guided tours from 12:30 - 4 pm. Guided tours of the church will be offered at 12:30 and 2:00 pm on a first-come, first-served basis. (Proof of vaccination required.) Learn more.

Newcomers welcome to all groups!

COMING UP NEXT SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24
Christianity’s Complicated Origins: Implications for Christian-Jewish Relations Today
Jesus himself was Jewish, as were his disciples and the earliest Christians, and yet Christians have often downplayed their Jewish origins. Mary C. Boys , the Skinner & McAlpin Professor of Theology at Union Theological Seminary and the author of several books on Christian-Jewish relations, looks at how Christians might show greater reverence for Jesus’ own tradition. Join us in person in the Great Hall or online via our website, Facebook and YouTube.

Sunday, October 24
Please join us for our October brunch at Spice Symphony, 150 East 50th Street, a Chinese-Indian fusion restaurant we have enjoyed in the past. You can meet us there at approximately 12:30 pm, or we can meet at the back of the church after the 11 am service. All are welcome!
The Peace Book Club meets virtually on Sunday, October 24, at 1:30 pm, to discuss the Amazon Prime documentary My Name is Pauli Murray. Newcomers welcome!

ONGOING AND UPCOMING
Thursdays, October 28-December 16, 7-8 PM (no class November 25th)
Learn about all your favorite hymns in this seven week class led by the Reverend Peter Thompson. A multitude of musical examples will be included in a comprehensive sprint through two thousand years of musical and ecclesiastical history. Register here.

On Sunday, October 31, St. Bart's will honor the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos with an altar of remembrance, and a fiesta on the terrace after the 11 o’clock service. If you would like to participate, please bring a photo of a loved one to place on the altar. Traditional Mexican foods and music will be offered. At the 10 am session of The Forum, Karina Escamilla of the Mexican Consulate will introduce the observance and discuss its importance to the people of Mexico.
Sunday, November 7 at 11 AM
St. Bartholomew's Choir offers Maurice Duruflé's "Requiem," with guest organist Michael Hey, under the direction of Paolo Bordignon. Duruflé was an extraordinarily exacting self-critic and few composers have devoted a lifetime of work resulting in only 14 opus numbers. By the same token, few have produced such works of such exquisite craft, interest, variety, and incomparable beauty.

Saturdays, October 9 - December 18, 10 am -11 am
The Saturday morning discussion group reflects on how to live a more deeply spiritual life through Sophfronia Scott's book-long encounter with the twentieth-century Roman Catholic monk Thomas Merton, The Seeker and The Monk: Everyday Conversations with Thomas Merton. Newcomers welcome. The October 16 session will be an unmoderated discussion of Chapter 2. The Reverend Peter Thompson returns on October 23 to facilitate a discussion of Chapters 2 and 3. Register here.

Mondays at 7 pm
Being still can be a way of taking a break from the demands of our busy world and a key to listening to our own heart. Lay facilitators lead a 30-minute session of learning about the power and practice of stillness.

Wednesdays, September 22-October 27, 6:45-8:15pm
For millennia, human beings, including Jews and Christians, have looked to their dreams as messages from God. St. Bart’s member Annette Thies (M.A., General Theological Seminary) will lead a series of dreamwork sessions this fall. Every dream group begins with some teaching on an aspect of dreaming or dreamwork, followed by a short silence and prayer, then the dreamwork itself. Register here.

Thursdays, September 16-October 21, 6:30-8 pm
Professor Larry Welborn of Fordham University returns to St. Bart's to explore the sayings of Jesus we don't know well: both the sayings of Jesus found in documents discovered over the past century and the sayings of Jesus found in the Bible whose truth we haven't yet fully contemplated. Each session will focus on an aphorism or parable using a synopsis that shows all the versions, including those found in recently discovered gospels. Register here.
2nd and 4th Mondays of the month from 6-7 pm
Led by the Reverend Meredith Ward, Forward Together is a support group for people who are experiencing job insecurity, who are unemployed or under-employed, or who are considering a career change. Grounded in scripture and prayer, the group is a safe and confidential space to share experiences, get support, and express concerns about job insecurity. Register here.

Wednesdays at 1 pm
