At Cristo Rey St. Martin (CRSM), the college preparation process for juniors and seniors begins at the start of the school year. College counselors Sharon Holdvogt and Ana Aguilar, along with a team of volunteers, work diligently to guide students through the search, application, and acceptance process. Armed with spreadsheets, weekly seminars, college visits, and input from college representatives, CRSM's counseling department prepares seniors to apply to college by winter break.

“From August through October, we meet with seniors multiple times one-on-one,” said Ana Aguilar. “We reassure students that every workshop has a purpose and to trust the process. You’re not alone.”

Preparation begins in junior year when students draft personal statements in English classes and explore affordable summer college programs. By senior year, students are well-prepared for the college application process. Sharon reflects, “We are in awe each year as a new class goes through this. It’s important to remember it’s their first time, and it’s powerful to witness their excitement and stress.”

Volunteers also assist students. Jeanie has volunteered for nearly a decade and helps students write essays and prepare applications. “Every student I’ve met is motivated and appreciative. The school has done something right,” she says, praising the English teachers for preparing students well.

Thanks to CRSM's counseling program, 100% of seniors were accepted into a four-year college for the fifth consecutive year, with 97% accepted into three or more programs—proof of the school’s commitment to student success.

Cristo Rey New York High School

The Cristo Rey New York High School (CRNYHS) community is excited to be back in session for another impactful school year. Our Mass of the Holy Spirit on September 5th at St. Cecilia’s Church provided a warm reunion for students and staff alike.

One of our seniors was pictured receiving communion from Director of Campus Ministry Joseph McQuarrie at the Mass of the Holy Spirit.

We are thrilled to kick off a new school year, marking our 21st year of service to the local community. This summer, we prepared for our incoming 361 students, including freshmen and transfer sophomores, who participated in our “Puente” program from July 8th to July 26th.

During these three weeks, students engaged in essential training for their Corporate Work Study job placements, receiving valuable lessons on career readiness, digital literacy, and workplace best practices. Meanwhile, our seniors dedicated time to crafting their college essays, ensuring they are ready for their next steps.

Looking ahead, our students are preparing for the Día de los Muertos Mass on November 1st, coinciding with All Saints Day. This Mass offers a meaningful opportunity for our community to remember and celebrate our loved ones who have passed. Every year, our students create their own “ofrenda” to honor these cherished lives.

As we reflect on the past few weeks of students returning to the classroom, we are inspired by the palpable school spirit that has filled our halls from day one. We can’t wait to see what this 2024-2025 school year has in store. Go Lions!
