Art Teachers Celebrated at Grant Reception

The Watercolor Society of North Carolina invited Craven County Schools middle and high school teachers to apply for their Arts in Education grant to support art classes in our public schools. The Watercolor Society of North Carolina (WSNC) is a nonprofit, statewide art organization that strives to strengthen and promote watercolor painting. The amount they pledge for the support of these grants is matched by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff of Boone, a leading supplier of art materials in the state of North Carolina.  This year four Craven County Schools art teachers received these grants, valued at $1250 each to purchase supplies from Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff.

The winners were invited to attend the presentation of their grant awards at the WSNC Annual Meeting and Award Ceremony at The Chelsea Restaurant in New Bern on Sunday, October 2. Attendees were able to observe a watercolor demonstration by Mr. Don Andrews, artist.  Ms. Beverly McAnulty, of the WSNC, and Mr. Joseph Miller, of Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff, recognized the following Art in Education grant recipients: Mrs. Lisa Connell of HJ MacDonald Middle School and Ms. Ashley McDaniel of New Bern High School.  Mrs. Betsy Gatchel, CCS Coordinator of Student Programs, attended and accepted on behalf of Mr. Chris Bennett of New Bern High School and Ms. Shannon Tarleton of Havelock Middle School.  Community partnerships such as this one help further support art in our schools.

Congratulations to our talented art educators!

The 2022-2023 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Cycle Begins on Oct. 1.

Completing the application is a necessary step for prospective college students to receive financial aid. Not only does it make you eligible for federal aid, such as Pell Grants or work-study programs, but North Carolina’s colleges and universities also use the form to divvy up state aid.

The form is open until June 30, 2023. Many North Carolina schools give out aid on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s best to fill it out as soon as possible, even if you haven’t finalized your plans.
