A Message from Pastor Ted
|
|
I have had the opportunity to be involved in bi-vocational ministry over the last thirty years in the Pacific Northwest (as an educator/coach and as a pastor in smaller churches). There have been many situations where I have experienced a secular philosophy of what I call, “Lording it over others.” It is an attitude of power to actually serve one’s personal wants and identity. As an educator/coach and pastor, I have seen it permeate into the world of parents, students, administrators, teachers, coaches, and yes, even into our churches. It is a power structure for human status and rule.
And Jesus has said, “But it shall not be so among you.” Jesus as Lord is radical in our society. The Christian culture is not a hierarchy of power. I invite you to our worship services and live streaming this Sunday as we thankfully praise our God and discover the kingdom of service and not lordship over others.
The passage for the sermon this Sunday is Matthew 20:20-28.
The Peace of Christ be with you,
Ted

Fall Food Drive
Saturdays, October 23 and 30
10:00AM - Noon
Church Main Entrance
What are the most needed items in the Deacons’ Food Drive coming Oct. 23 and 30? Click here for Clark County Food Bank’s Most Wanted list. They also need non-food items such as personal hygiene products, diapers, facial tissues, paper towels and pet food.
But wait! There’s more. Some of the donations head to McLoughlin and Marshall’s Family-Community Resource Centers. Kid-friendly foods are welcome.
Donations of money will be put to good use at both the Food Bank and the schools. The Deacons have been able to provide grocery gift cards to Mac and Marshall families whose paychecks don’t stretch to the end of the month.
A food barrel will be in the gathering area the next two Sundays in case you can’t make it on the Saturdays, when Deacons will be on hand from 10 to noon.

Chaos and Creation: a study of Genesis
Sundays at 10:30AM
Fellowship Hall
Taught by Pastors Scott and Ted
Genesis is the foundational book for the whole Bible. It is where the story of God and us begins, and where the trajectory of redemption is established. Chaos is a big part of that story, as is the creation (and new creation) that comes out of chaos. Although chaos is still present in our world, it never has the last word. In Genesis the word of God spoken in love, bringing order into a disordered world, reveals how we can find hope in a broken world. Come and join the class beginning this Sunday, as we dive into this amazing book and see how this ancient word can speak into our lives today.

Helping Hands
…needs you! One of the ministries of this church has always been helping out those in our congregation who need a little help with projects around the house or yard. We are looking for volunteers who would be willing (on an on-call basis) to help for a couple of hours a couple times a year with household projects.
Do you have skills in plumbing, electrical, or general repair? Maybe you’re just handy fixing things around the home, or are willing to perform general labor as needed. If this sounds like something you would be willing to help with please contact either Jerry Brown, [email protected], or Terry Hurley in the church office. Also, if you or someone you know needs some help in this way, please let us know.

Coping with Uncertainty
Sunday, October 31 at 10:30AM
Chapel/Zoom Hybrid
Uncertainty is no respecter of persons—young or old, rich or needy—we’ve all experienced it in one way or another, especially in the past 19 months. Are there strategies that can help to calm the stress and anxiety? Join our own Carol Cate, who will draw on her experience as a healthcare professional and teacher, to uncover ways to deal with persistent uncertainty, Coping with Uncertainty.
Two ways to join: meet in person in the Chapel or join us via Zoom. If you choose online, contact Terry Hurley, [email protected], in the church office for the Zoom link.

Melanesia Boat Project
Basic medical care does not exist on the majority of remote islands in Melanesia. Medical professionals want to help but there is no reliable transportation available. Most islands in Melanesia have no place for an airplane to land. The available boats are unreliable and unsafe.
Jim and Gina Nie are missionaries with the Melanesia Boat Project, which is under Tyndale Bible Translators. They conducted a 2-year needs analysis in marine transport. The results determined that a purpose-built craft is warranted to sustain services in ocean regions lacking aviation and marine facilities. A 20-meter power catamaran was designed as a multi-role vessel to support existing organizations where transport is nonexistent, dangerous or does not maintain schedules. The organization goal is to establish this humanitarian aid operation on par with ones like Mission Aviation Fellowship (www.maf.org), but over open ocean regions.
Watch for more information in the October 24 worship services at CPC.
