Registration Tip: Section Numbers
Do you know the difference between course numbers and section numbers?
A department/course number identifies the course content and competencies.
A section number distinguishes the actual instance of the class, because there are usually multiple options for class days, times, or modalities (i.e., whether the class is online or in-person).
For example, if you are registered for ENGL 1010 105:
-
ENGL 1010 is the department/course number which determines the actual class content and competencies.
- 105 is the section number which indicates your specific class day, time, instructor, dates, and modality.
You will register for a specific section of each of your courses, and it is helpful for you to know what sections you are in.
Section numbers can even be helpful to you in determining what courses you want to take – maybe you are looking for all online courses, needing a late-starting class, or wanting to take a HyFlex format course.
Here’s a quick guide to some of LCCC’s section numbering:
-
100-199: Cheyenne campus, full-semester, daytime sections
-
200-219: Cheyenne campus, full-semester, evening sections
-
260-279 and 340-349: HyFlex offerings
-
300-399: Laramie Campus sections
-
500-519: Online Anytime (Asynchronous)
-
520-539: Online on a Schedule (Synchronous)
-
540-569: Hybrid (Part Online, Part In-Person)
If you show up to class on the first day and there’s a sign on the door about a room or date change, pay attention to the section number on the sign, and know your own section numbers (they show up on your schedule in Navigate) so you can keep track of your specific classes!
