FAMILY PROMISE WEEK COMING SOON

As was the case last September, Family Promise is continuing to house families experiencing homelessness in their transitional housing apartment building rather than in churches. Two to three families are sharing each apartment. Although housing and transportation are not needed, we will be providing meals the week of March 6-13, and the process will be similar to what we did this past fall.

A reminder of what that will look like:
• First, we are being asked to provide evening meals to individual family units Monday through Friday and to deliver a list of needed breakfast and lunch supplies the Friday before. Family Promise is finding that families have more than enough left-overs for dinners on the weekends.
 • Second, Family Promise will pair us with another church to help share the load. We have not yet been informed of our church partnership but will find out soon.

Questions you may have:
• Do they need paper-ware? No – families have stocked kitchens.
• What about drinks? Request for drinks will be part of the breakfast/lunch request list. No additional drinks need to be provided with dinner
• Do we need to provide condiments with meals? No – the day center has plenty in stock.
• Costs - our Family Promise budget can cover these meals, so teams volunteering can submit receipts to the church office for reimbursement.
• Where is the day center? The day center is located at 903 Method Road, 27606, just off Western Boulevard.

If you are interested in signing up to support these families, please email Holly IvelShe will coordinate with you directly, and answer any further questions.
LEAH REED TO RETURN
ON FEBRUARY 27

Leah Reed will return to work on Sunday, February 27. We have missed her joyous laughter and creative ministry, but we are grateful that she and Chad have been able to spend precious time with Jennings during his first few months of life. As we say in our liturgy of dedication, nurturing the children God entrusts to our care is a sacred privilege and an awesome responsibility. It is also exhausting at times! As but one expression of our desire to practice what we preach, our family leave policy allows staff members time away to care for loved ones, including the new children who come into their lives, to embrace fully the sacred and awesome.

We welcome Leah back with great joy and offer our continuing support to her, Chad, and Jennings, as they transition into a new normal rhythm of life!
COED SOFTBALL TEAM
SIGN-UPS

There has been increased interest in restarting the church's softball team. Team registration is this week so we must know as soon as possible if you would like to play. If you are interested, please email Michael Hood. This league is open to all adults. The season begins April 18 and consists of 12 games and a tournament.
ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE

As a Baptist congregation that follows the Christian year, we allow the Jesus story to shape our lives throughout the year and we allow a sacred calendar to shape worship. By doing so, we are borrowing from other Christian traditions, while making them our own. One tradition we have embraced for over a decade is the Ash Wednesday Service, which this year will be held March 2 at 6:45pm, in the sanctuary. We are thankful to be able to have this service again in-person after making significant adjustments for a virtual-only experience last year.

The service includes congregational singing, prayers of confession and assurance, and a brief homily, but the central act is the imposition of ashes in the shape of a cross, as we speak these words, “From dust you have come, and to dust you will return.” These ashes (created by burning the palm fronds from last year’s Palm Sunday service) offer a sign of our mortality and penance, a confession of our frailty and need for God. Our willingness to receive them demonstrates our commitment to self-examination as well as our openness to God’s grace. Our Ash Wednesday service provides sacred space in which to begin a season of spiritual renewal called Lent. All who are comfortable are invited to participate in this special service - we will remain masked for the ritual - but we understand that some are not quite ready. So, the service will be streamed as well.
SANCTUARY CHOIR RESUMES

The Sanctuary Choir resumes rehearsals this Wednesday, February 23, at 7:30pm, after breaking for two months while the worst of the Omicron wave of COVID-19 ran its course. Interested in joining the choir? Ready to lift your voice? Now is a good time to join us as we roll out new music for spring. Have questions? Contact Warren Howell. Vaccination against COVID-19 remains a requirement for participation in this ensemble.
DREAM TEAM ON THE WEB

The congregation has been at work since last August talking and listening and dreaming about who we want to be as a church going forward. From that process, we have gathered stories, ideas, and insights. All of that has now been gathered in one place on this FBC webpage for you to read and ponder. We hope you will take the opportunity to review it before our next congregational effort, which will take place
on Sunday, March 27, before worship.

WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT . . .

Matthew Hager, part of our church family, is a featured actor in the next play from Justice Theater Project: We Are Proud to Present . . . The play fits into our Centerpoint emphasis on racial justice, acts of genocide, and our response.

In the play, a group of actors gathers to tell the little-known story of the first genocide of the twentieth century. As the full force of a horrific past crashes into the good intentions of the present, what seemed a far-away place and time is suddenly all too close to home. Just whose story are they telling?

Award-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury collides the political with the personal in a play that is irreverently funny and seriously brave.
The play is live at St. Augustine's University and live-streamed through February 27. The themes of the play may not be suitable for early teens and younger children. Parental discretion is encouraged.
