Helen Turnbull at TEDxDelrayBeach
CEO of Human Facets, Helen has a 25+ year successful track record in the field of Global Inclusion. She is an internationally recognized Thought Leader on Unconscious Bias, global inclusion and diversity. As creator of "Cognizant" -- Unconscious Bias assessment tool and the "ISM Profile" for measuring Inclusion Skills gaps, her work has contributed to clients winning the Catalyst Award for Gender improvements.

We will watch Ms. Turnbull's TED talk together and use it as a springboard to a discussion on inclusion.

Between 1966 and 1975 Pan Am World Airways required a woman to have a college degree, speak two languages, and be between 5’3″ and 5’9, among other things. Mary Ann Sines will lead the discussion.

October 11—“The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine,” by Janice P. Nimura. Elizabeth Blackwell in 1849 became the first woman in America to receive an M.D. Though the world first recoiled at the notion of a woman studying medicine, her intelligence and intensity won her the acceptance of the male medical entablement.
Did you know AAUW Daytona Beach was one of two branches recognized in the AAUW Five Star Recognition Program? AAUW Daytona completed stars for Communication, Public Policy and Program. AAUW Sarasota completed all five stars.
AAUW’s Five-Star National Recognition Program rewards affiliates (states, branches and other organizations) for aligning their work with the AAUW strategic plan and other initiatives that foster the organization’s mission of advancing gender equity for women and girls. The program will run from July 2021 through June 2022.

What are some of the growing economic and political issues between China and Africa?
The Covid-19 crisis has put a massive strain on what was growing a positive economic and political relationship between China and the continent of Africa. As Chinese President Xi Jinping’s centerpiece “Belt and Road initiative” continues to expand Chinese power, the response to the spread of Covid-19, as well as the African government’s growing debt to China, has seen pushback. What are some of the growing economic and political issues between China and Africa?

Zoom meetings do allow us to enjoy speakers who do not live in our area. If you are, or know of an interesting presenter who would be willing to share a program with our branch, please contact Pat paross@aol.com to help with scheduling.
We are looking for a branch Tech Trek Coordinator. Responsibilities include:
  • Serve as the contact with the Tech Trek Committee,
  • Distribute nomination letters to teachers and principals (provided by the Committee) to the Volusia County Schools STEM Coordinator for distribution, (Oct 15),
  • Follow up with schools to encourage them to nominate students,
  • Arrange a small committee to interview applicants (before February 25)),
  • Plan to recognize the girls who have been selected and send info to the local press.
