Kwasha Quilt Dedication
On Sunday, October 20 there will be an opportunity in worship to lift up prayers of blessing for Karen Raborn and the Kwasha School. We will have a quilt made especially for Karen on the altar table, that will be given to Karen as an expression of how much she and her work mean to Maplewood UMC. Anyone present will be able to lay hands on the quilt and offer your own prayers of blessing.

Food Storage and Disposal
SPECIAL REQUEST from the TRUSTEES
In order to keep the building clean and free of unwanted pests, please take special care with food used during ministry activities. Ministries that include food should please make plans to store food in refrigerators or other rodent-proof storage containers. Please clean spills thoroughly, and empty trash cans of any food waste by taking the trash bags to the large trash containers on the north side of the building. Thank you so much for caring for our facility, so that it can be a vibrant hub of ministry and a center for our church community. (Run for 3 weeks

A Note from Pastor Andy
This Sunday we’ll wrap up our three-week series, “Rethink Generosity.” We’ve been busting money myths during this series, including the myths, “The church needs your money” and, “Giving time and talent is enough.” The third and final myth that we’ll tackle this week is, “Bigger is better.”
Simply put, financial discipleship is not about amount; it is about proportion. As followers of Jesus, we do not need to think about our giving in terms of “how much” we give, but rather in terms of “what percentage of our income” we are giving. And the guidance from Scripture and from generations of church tradition indicates that proportion should be 10%, which is known as a “tithe.”
This matters, because this week we will consecrate our promises of financial discipleship for the upcoming calendar year. Promise cards have been distributed in worship for the past two weeks, and will be available again this week. There are blanks on those cards on which we all will be asked to write down some numbers. One is for the amount we are promising to give, and one is the proportion of our income that amount represents.
As you pray about what number you are going to be putting in that blank, start with your income. Divide that number by ten. That will give you the 10% target of your tithe. Easy peasy. Now, you may very well be in a season of your life where your giving needs to be under the 10% mark. That’s understandable. You may very well be in a season of your life where your giving can exceed the tithe. That’s wonderful.
Either way, it is about taking the time to prayerfully discern our capacity to give, and making a promise to give at that capacity, whatever it is. It is not about the amount, it is about the intentionality and faithfulness we put into the discernment.
The Holy Spirit is doing some wonderful things in and through Maplewood UMC. It is such an exciting season to be a part of this vital community of faith. My prayer is that our financial discipleship flows with an equivalent wonderfulness and vitality, an energy to match what God is doing in our midst.

Ad Council Proposes New Mission Statement
“Maplewood United Methodist Church creates spaces where people can
have authentic encounters with Christ, discover their Spiritual gifts, and use them for God’s glory.”
At their September meeting, the Administrative Council continued discussing the congregation’s mission. The statement above comes from a sentence on the “I’m New” page of the website. The Council believes it is actually a statement that fittingly describes the mission of the congregation. Please give prayerful consideration to this statement for the next few weeks. If you have any input, please contact an Administrative Council member. The Council will vote on the statement at the November meeting. The proposed statement would replace the current Mission Statement: “Feeding the community - body, mind, heart, and spirit - through the love of Christ.” The official Vision Statement would remain “A community whose body, mind, heart, and spirit are fed through the love of Christ.”

Election Night Communion, so go to the polls, then come to the table.
This campaign season has been brutally divisive. Here is a chance to be a part of something different, something better, something more. On election night, Tuesday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m., all are welcome and encouraged to gather in the chapel on the campus of Eden Theological Seminary to worship, and to celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion together. This service is a collaboration of Maplewood, Unity, and Webster United Methodist Churches, and it is open to all. The unity of the sacrament is stronger than the divisiveness of an election.

This Sunday we will discuss what it means to be greedy and how we can "Be rich in God!"
Last Sunday we will learned about the "Good Samaritan." We talked about what the Samaritan gave to the man in need and why it was unexpected. Sometimes giving and helping others is difficult and inconvenient but it is important! We focused on ways we could show compassion to others!
