May is “Preservation Month”

Are there places you cannot imagine your community without? Center Meeting House in Newbury, The John Hay Estate at The Fells, the Barn Playhouse in New London, the Abbott Library and the landmark Livery in Sunapee? Each of these has been ‘saved’ by dedicated volunteers and restored to serve another generation. Preservation activity creates local jobs and benefits the economy and is part of the landscape that attracts visitors & businesses to our state. Donate and volunteer with friends old and new, at the special places in your hometown. Buy a “Moose Plate”. Proceeds go towards programs that support New Hampshire’s natural, historical and cultural resources.

SPECIAL EVENTS in SUNAPEE &

ALL AROUND the LAKE

Last Saturday night’s rescue of an injured hiker, unfamiliar with the mountain and the lingering springtime snow, ice & 70 mph wind, prompted a warning from NH Fish & Game to plan ahead and be prepared before attempting such an ascent. Tonight’s “Hiking Safety” program at Newbury Library shares good ‘before you hike' information.

Registration to AIL Summer courses is open now.

CUE THE MUSIC

Friday, May 26th: Tom Pirozzoli at the Sunapee Coffeehouse

Tom Pirozzoli is well known, much respected on the New England and on the national music scene. Tom's songs have been recorded by artists as varied as Tonto's Big Idea, Willy Porter, and Pam Prior. His co- writes with Willy Porter have been performed in Carnegie Hall, at Madison Square Garden and The Royal Albert Hall. Original songs recorded by Tom in the 1980's with the Fast Folk Music Magazine (New York) are in the Smithsonian collection. Tom's skills as a performer and singer-songwriter were honored by Musician Magazine as a winner in their "Best Unsigned Band" contest.

"Pirozzoli offers a vision of the exotic places he visits and straight from the heat sentiment through his songs… a low enchanting voice and a prolific knack for writing lyrics." — NH Seacoast

Zach Nugent’s Dead Set

Fri, May 19 @ 7:30pm

At LOH, guitarist/vocalist Zach Nugent celebrates the 45th anniversary of Grateful Dead’s one-and-only New Hampshire concert: a May 5, 1978 appearance at Dartmouth College’s Thompson Arena as part of Green Key Weekend.

With his Dead Set band, the noted Vermont-based Grateful Dead expert (and former member of Melvin Seals & JGB) will faithfully re-create the Hanover set list song-for-song — from Promised Land to a Werewolves of London encore — with original GD gear on stage.

Choose your own adventure! In an effort to keep the atmosphere friendly and fun, we’re offering two seating experiences for this performance:

If you’d like to sit close to the action with the freedom to stand and groove in place, choose a General Admission ticket in the orchestra level. Orchestra seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you’d prefer to have an assigned location where those around you remain seated during the show, grab a Reserved ticket in the balcony. Learn More

The Fells Summer Camps

Each July we offer three “Kids in Nature” camps for children. Outdoor Painting is a four-day workshop on the essentials of painting nature. Students, ages 10 and up, study painting techniques and express their creativity while learning about color, composition and perspective. In Photography Camp, students ages 10 and up learn the key elements of nature photography and composition, how to use a DSLR camera, or a camera with a fully adjustable manual mode, and leave with outstanding images. Nature Explorers Camp is for children entering grades 1-5 to learn about nature at the Hay Estate by exploring and playing in the woodlands, meadows, and wetlands. Nature Explorers Camp is co-sponsored by the Lake Sunapee Protective Association (LSPA) and the John Hay Estate at The Fells. Scholarships are available for all of our summer camps. To sign up a camper, please call 603-763-4789 x3.
