July 4, 2022
The ACPE office is closed today in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.
Summer greetings to each of you. I hope this finds you well during this midpoint of summer 2022.

We celebrate freedom on the July 4th holiday. There are many ways of celebrating the freedoms we enjoy, including the freedom to define what it means to live in the United States. We've recently learned there are many passionate definitions of a patriotic American.

The same is true for ACPE.
As we take time off (hopefully) to celebrate the 4th of July, our task force was invited to reflect on our gleanings as we have engaged in anti-bias work regarding language and immigration. Reflecting on our experience of living in the United States as immigrants in general, and as ACPE Certified Educators in particular, we acknowledge our desire to belong. The diverse histories of immigrants, which make up the American identity, invite us to engage with our own stories that brought us to this country. Whether we immigrated for education purposes, family unification, religious freedom, or economic opportunities—we understand that our identity as immigrants is an important part of our supervisory practice as ACPE Certified Educators. The certification journey itself is a symbolic migration story, a before, in-between, and hopefully in-beyond.
Once a month the ACPE Professional Ethics Commission (PEC) posts a couple of statements from our Code of Professional Ethics for ACPE Members. Each posting is accompanied by a brief personal reflection from a member of the PEC discussing some ways this person lives these commitments*.

This Week's Reflection
As ACPE continues our efforts to become an anti-bias organization, these words of Frederick Douglass speak to the heart of our current condition, even as he was speaking about the inexcusable enslavement of people during the 1800s. While it is not a poem per se, there is poetry to Douglass’ speech that makes this well worth hearing. It is read by James Earl Jones:

As this email is likely landing in your inbox on the US national holiday, this article may provide some thoughts about rest and resilience, especially after the last couple of years. Take a look:

This Week on the Calendar
As a part of ACPE’s commitment to anti-bias practices in all dimensions of our work, a subcommittee of the Anti-Bias Work Group has recommended we stop publishing a “holy days” calendar, recognizing that all efforts will be inadequate and may unintentionally reinforce privileged perspectives for some while inadequately representing others. Instead, ACPE will focus on:

  • Promoting educational inclusion and exclusion,
  • Deconstructing the Christocentric history of the ACPE,
  • The impact of how our US context is also predominantly Christian,
  • the intersections among racism, xenophobia, and religiously based oppressions, and
  • the implications of the increasing secularization/shift to pluralism and spiritual but not religious (SBNR) values in US society.
We encourage you to reference these and additional resources as both educational tools and when planning programs and events (note: careful reading of the tools at these links will illustrate the above points, but as such could foster good conversation within your programs and practices):
