December 3-4, 2021

In Côte d'Ivoire, the consumption of bushmeat remains a cultural fact and its strong demand in urban areas has led to a proliferation of markets that could be places of transmission of these diseases, like the Wuhan market in China. To prevent these zoonoses, an awareness campaign is organized by the Association of Doctors and Experts of Côte d'Ivoire (ADEx-CI) on bushmeat markets. It will mobilize 15 people and will consist of identifying 2 markets per region and per year and will target 200 people per market; to distribute 500 T-shirts, 1000 flyers, 4000 gloves, 2000 mufflers, 1000 hydroalcoholic gels and 500 personal protective equipment and to recruit 5 people to constitute the office of the local “One Health” committee. https://onehealthday.com/node/11240

Faisalanbad, Pakistan. Hosted by the National Institutes of Health, Pakistan. One key aspect of One Health is the understanding that animals can serve as early warning signs of potential human illness, so studying and tracking diseases in animals can help prevent illnesses and disease outbreaks in people. As the interdependence and connectedness between humans, animals and the environment continue to increase, embracing the One Health approach is the most effective and efficient way to protect public health. A seminar is planned on One Health Day at NIH Pakistan with stakeholders and participation of different sectors. https://onehealthday.com/node/11446

Groundbreaking Declaration of the G20 Ministers of Health in Preparation for the G20 Global Summit, “… linkages between human and animal health, the effects across One Health related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food systems, and environmental health, including climate change, ecosystem degradation, increased encroachment into natural systems and loss of biodiversity should be addressed through the One Health approach..........There is now the opportunity for the full G20 leadership at its Summit in October to translate the Declaration into concrete action.

G20 Health and Finance Ministers announced the establishment of a Joint Finance-Health Task Force in line with One Health principles. To succeed with One Health will require those with the power, and those who are outside, to remain vigilant in keeping focus. The door is slightly ajar, let’s open it wide.

Rome, Italy, “ ... We are determined to advance pandemic, prevention, preparedness and response, as well as to prepare the way for stronger post-pandemic recovery, in line with the comprehensive One Health approach, taking into account work of the Tripartite and UN Environment Programme and their newly established One Health High Level Expert Panel, and with previous G20 commitments to tackle antimicrobial resistance. ... Based on the principles above and building on the work of the G20 Informal Group of Finance and Health Experts, we establish a G20 Joint Finance-Health Task Force (the Task Force) aimed at enhancing dialogue and global cooperation on issues relating to pandemic PPR, promoting the exchange of experiences and best practices, developing coordination arrangements between Finance and Health Ministries, promoting collective action, assessing and addressing health emergencies with cross-border impact, and encouraging effective stewardship of resources for pandemic PPR, while adopting a One Health approach.” https://tinyurl.com/4uaajmhj

Twin crises afflict the natural world. The first is climate change. Its causes and potentially catastrophic consequences are well known. The second crisis has received much less attention and is less understood but still requires urgent attention by global policymakers. It is the collapse of biodiversity, the sum of all things living on the planet. https://nyti.ms/3vVZNTb

COVID-19 will not be the last Disease X. The newly established World Health Organization (WHO) Scientific Advisory Group on the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) presents an unprecedented opportunity to better guide studies that specifically investigate high-threat pathogens…………. We need scientific collaboration, data sharing, and implementation of a robust “one health” approach that brings together the human, animal, and environmental spheres to boost risk identification, reduction, and surveillance in animals and at the human-animal-environment interface. This must be linked to early action to investigate, characterize, and contain threats. In parallel, the world needs systematic processes to study the emergence of these pathogens and their routes of transmission from natural reservoirs to humans. Laboratory protocols around the world must be monitored and strengthened. https://bit.ly/3bqUSQx

Author: Dr. Michael W. Fox
We have ignored, exploited and violated many of these relationships for millennia and now face the nemesis of Nature’s retribution. The worse is yet to come if we do not, as the Hopi Prophecy warns, collectively and singularly repair these relationships and respect all our relations, plant and animal, water, soil and stone......In this anthropocene age we are experiencing the existential crisis, environmentally, socio-economically and in terms of public health and food security that the Hopi Indians prophetically warned about as a consequence of koyaanisquatsi, life out of balance. Renunciation of our self-worship of gods created in our own image would be a good beginning toward living in harmony with all life, the spiritual root of One Health and the antidote to our pathogenic anthropocentrism. Indeed, Global Sustainability via a One Health approach as a moral compass is critical to our planet’s survival and thereby ourselves. https://bit.ly/3GzVSAs

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is actively engaged in a U.S. national effort to protect the public’s health from the harmful effects of climate change. Lyme disease, West Nile virus disease, and Valley fever are just some of the infectious diseases that are on the rise and spreading to new areas of the United States. Milder winters, warmer summers, and fewer days of frost make it easier for these and other infectious diseases to expand into new geographic areas and infect more people. https://bit.ly/3bmCc4H

December 3, 2021 Virtual Conference
22nd EMBL Science and Society Conference
Hosted by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), an intergovernmental organisation with more than 80 independent research groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology. By designing and implementing programmes, policies, legislation and multidisciplinary research, One Health seeks to deliver the best possible public health outcomes on a global scale….This has become increasingly urgent, as many of these changes have occurred in our very recent history: through the prevalence of deforestation and intensive farming, with the increase in forced migration due to climate change, or simply through modern methods of travel and trade (which allow diseases to spread quickly across the globe). This conference will examine the potential societal benefits of the multifaceted One Health methodology, analyse how successful it has been to-date, determine whether One Health could be the key to future pandemic prevention, and ascertain what steps are needed to accelerate implementation. It will explore whether the interpretation of One Health has been biased towards an anthropocentric view of “health,” and it will also seek to answer the question: will something as far-reaching as the COVID-19 pandemic be the catalyst needed to finally make the aspirational goals of One Health a reality? Brussels, Belgium. Hosted by AnimalhealthEurope and organised in collaboration with STAR-IDAZ IRC this symposium drew on the DISCONTOOLS and STAR-IDAZ IRC initiatives to identify current research gaps and provide road maps for public and private innovations in animal health. It brought together scientists, policy makers, and representatives from the animal health industry, funding bodies and stakeholder organisations….. Improving animal health is a key factor to address today’s global challenges, but at the same time, global changes such as increased mobility of people and animals, changing consumer behaviours and climate change are altering disease risk and leading to the emergence of new pathogens…..The Discontools project celebrated the completion of the second update cycle of more than 50 infectious disease analyses, an effort taking five years……. Discontools is an impressive resource to help address some of the great challenges of livestock farming today: Keeping disease out, reducing the climate footprint, reducing the use of antibiotics and making animal farming more welfare friendly. “It is important to see these challenges holistically and invest in ‘One Health’. https://tinyurl.com/mpjx9r8w

October 19, 2021 Webinar
Hosted in its COVID-19 Health Webinar Series by the U.S. Library of Congress Health Services Division and Science, Technology & Business Division. Understanding the scientific processes behind the role of animals and zoonotic diseases is of vital importance to the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic opened our eyes to a new era in global health and security, and how the One Health (OH) approach’s many facets will be useful to prepare for the ‘next’ pandemic. The OH approach requires full engagement with disciplines beyond human and veterinary medicine and environmental science, such as sociology, economics, political science, and behavioral science. Drs. Sharon Deem, Bernadette Dunham and Tracey McNamara spoke to further understanding of the original mechanisms of zoonotic diseases like SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2) / COVID-19 (Coronavirus Infectious Disease-19). Call for Papers
In 2022, The Lancet Planetary Health will dedicate an issue to Planetary Health education. Fuelled by the intersecting challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and profound social, economic, and environmental injustices, calls for new ways to work together for a healthy, just, and sustainable future are burgeoning. With this call for papers, The Lancet Planetary Health is signalling a long-term interest and commitment to publishing research, learning, and practice that broadly addresses education for planetary health, and the societal transformations this requires. We welcome a broad spectrum of contributions, but have a particular interest in operational examples that address the why, what, and how of planetary health education and related practice. This collection seeks to profile case examples, specific research on transformational educational initiatives, reviews and viewpoints that contribute to understanding of the design, conduct, evaluation, and success of education, training, and professional development that contribute toward the goal of planetary health.

Older Book
Roy E and Linda Locklar compiled by Stewart (Author), 2006, Donning Company Publishers, ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1578643813
This limited-edition volume celebrates 75 years of service in the veterinary profession in New Mexico. Interesting text and fascinating pictures make this book a powerful learning tool for all. It is impossible to overstate the importance of animals in our own history. The domestication of animals is as numerically amazing as that of plants in that, of the world's thousands of land mammals, only fourteen have been successfully domesticated to become significant sources of food, clothing, draft labor, or mounts. Of those, the major five successfully domesticated animals-cattle, horses, swine, sheep, and goats--plus the dog and cat, constitute the bulk of most veterinary practices to this day.

Video

Land use policies can at times result in unintended consequences, often at the expense of entire ecosystems. This video on the privatization of land in and around the Mara-Serengeti in Kenya and Tanzania demonstrates how disease can spread when wildlife, livestock and humans cross over into each others' spaces. An integrated One Health approach in the management of landscapes can help mitigate or prevent disruption of these inter-related environments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qi0TvyGnns
