.... .......September 14, 2022 .... .............. Keeping Fondren Fabulous

Special Edition: Water

Board member Sarah Bentley, Senator Blount, FRF Board President-Elect John Lauderdale

Jackson leaders must come together

.....Senator David Blount briefed members of the FRF Board Tuesday evening on Jackson's water crisis, now in its 6th week.

.....According to Senator Blount, the first priority is to repair and restore service to end the current crisis. As progress continues at O.B. Curtis Water Plant, water quality testing could begin within days.

.....The next priority has to do with funding: first taking advantage of state funding that has already been set aside for all cities in Mississippi.

.....The FRF Board focused, however, on the second funding step: encouraging every elected leader in Jackson to put aside differences and discussions of "how we got here" and concentrate on a unified effort to achieve sufficient support from the federal government.

.....The FRF Board will be contacting electing leaders to encourage them to "come to the table" to work on a unified plan to address Jackson's water situation. Board members encourage all Fondren residents to make their own contacts.

GJCP encourages unity, long-term solution

.....Yesterday, the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership took a similar stand noting: With the world watching, we are teetering on the brink of greatness or abject failure.

.....The GJCP, which represents more than 1,400 businesses, stated that elected officials and business leaders must come together now to find a solution which includes these three principles:

  • Allow the state and EPA to be the regulator, not the owner and operator
  • Ensure affordable and sustainable rates
  • Create a permanent, reliable solution

.....GJCP also endorsed the creation of a regional utility service model within the existing service area, noting that regional governance models have proven successful across the country.

Avoid being victim of shed break-ins

.....Since July, there’s been a string of shed and garage break-ins and attempted break-ins in Fondren, with many of the incidents happening since the first of September. Fondren residents have been sharing information with each other and working with JPD Precinct 4 Commander Obie Wells. The break-ins have typically occurred during the night, between midnight and 5 a.m.

.....Commander Wells has ordered additional nighttime “direct patrols” in the areas where the break-ins have occurred. Additionally, Wells had some suggestions for neighbors in the area to improve their own security, and help prevent future break-ins.

.....1. Report all break-ins or attempted break-ins to JPD, with all information you have. Call 911 if you witness a crime. Call (601) 960-1641 to report a property crime or burglary.

.....2. Get a security camera. Commander Wells emphasized to get one that has the best quality video you can find. Also consider your internet speed and dependability when deciding between a service that stores video on the cloud vs. internal memory in the camera.

.....3. Lock things up and make them hard to take. Many of the burglaries happened in sheds without locks.

.....4. Communicate with your neighbors about these incidents, so they know to be on the lookout. If you have a block or street captain, let them know about. If you share information on Nextdoor about crimes in the area, make sure you only share it to people in Fondren.

.....5. Write down serial numbers for all of your equipment or electronic devices. Ideally, JPD can coordinate with the pawn shops to see if items have been sold there. There’s a state law that requires pawn shops to enter in the serial numbers into an online database for newly sold items and hold them for 15 days so that they can be put in this system. When you file the police report, make sure they have any serial numbers you have, and ask the officer to check that database.

.....6. Get bright flood lights and motion lights around your house. Light up the area around your house at night. This is a strong deterrent.

.....7. Capitol Police also work in most of Fondren. The number to report things to them is (601) 359-3125.
