Last Mile Federal Funding Account Grant Program Stakeholders,
On October 4, 2024, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) recommended grant awards of $157 million in funding for eight last mile Federal Funding Account broadband infrastructure projects in Amador, Los Angeles, and Solano Counties, benefitting an estimated 2.4 million Californians. In addition, the CPUC finalized grant awards for 14 last mile broadband infrastructure projects in five counties on September 26, 2024. The final grant awards are in El Dorado, Del Norte, Humboldt, Santa Clara, and Siskiyou Counties, including grants to three Tribal entities— the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, Karuk Tribe, and Yurok Telecommunications Corporation. With this release, to date the CPUC has issued —
- $804 million in awards and recommended awards, combined, for 76 projects in 33 counties benefitting approximately 2.9 million Californians.
- Approved awards of $606 million for 59 projects in 27 counties benefitting approximately 517,000 Californians. Twenty-nine awards are to public entity applicants, seven are to Tribal applicants, and 35 benefit primarily disadvantaged or low-income communities. - Recommended awards of $198 million for 17 projects in six counties benefiting approximately 2.4 million Californians. Nine of the recommended awards are to public entity applicants and nine benefit primarily disadvantaged or low-income communities. These recommended awards are currently open for public comments. They may be voted on by the CPUC at its upcoming public voting meetings on October 17 and November 7, 2024. (See Draft Resolutions T-17850, T-17852, T-17853, and T-17855.)
These recommended and final awards are part of the $2 billion last mile Federal Funding Account Grant Program. The program expands broadband internet access for underserved and unserved communities across California. This announcement continues a rolling process of awards and recommendations, highlighting the State’s commitment to bridging the digital divide through Broadband For All.
Draft Resolutions with award recommendations will be released for public comments approximately every two to three weeks through the rest of the year. These recommendations will be considered and must be approved by vote of the CPUC’s Commissioners at a public voting meeting.
