The Town of Rolesville continues to work with its partners at the intersection of Main & Young. Significant progress has been made on many aspects of the project.
- This week, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality oversaw the excavation efforts at the corner of E. Young and South Main Street. Samples were taken to be tested; results will take 3 to 5 weeks. We are working with our partners to mitigate any potential contaminated materials found per NC law.
- Fred Smith Company will begin adding storm drainage from the parking lot on N. Main Street to Williams Street in the coming weeks. Preparations for this process are underway. The addition of storm drainage is essential to keeping the intersection and areas around it from holding too much water during storms.
- The sidewalk in front of NC Movement on E. Young Street is almost done. Crews have poured concrete. More grading is still needed before it is complete. By the time the project is complete, the intersection will have sidewalks and pedestrian crosswalks that comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, which will ensure the safety of residents and visitors as the town grows.
- Lumin8 workers will start installing new fiber and cabinets for new signals and signal adjustments for the existing intersection.
Change orders and submittal reviews for the new waterline portion of the project are moving along. Work on the water lines is anticipated to start in January. It's necessary to replace them before fully reopening the intersection.
As part of Fred Smith Company policy, their workers and subcontractors will be off for the Christmas holiday from December 20, 2024, to January 1, 2025. They will be back on-site on January 2, 2025. The estimated timeline for reopening the intersection fully remains Spring/Summer 2025.
Once the work at Main & Young Streets is complete, the intersection will have new stormwater drainage to prevent flooding, new water lines to better serve residents and business owners, and new sidewalks and pedestrian walkways to keep everyone safe. This project is a $23 million investment in the future of Rolesville’s downtown, creating a safer, walkable, more successful, and more attractive Main Street for residents, businesses, and visitors.
